There were women prisoners too. None of those were released.

Fuck you for you service!

The military industrial complex has told us for decades that those in the middle east are against american values and our way of life. This is the american values they experienced, and when they strike back we play dumb and call them evil for it. Crazy right?

I'll bet it was Boney M. That would be torture.

As little as the bush admin cared for rights the trump admin cares less. This kind of thing is probably happening in migrant camps right now

Schrodinger’s US, a nation of bullies and simultaneously a nation of wimps.

Peoples idea of strength can come in many forms, one of the most toxic is that winning (in any area) means the others lose, or lose more than you.

Do people remember that Ron DeSantis was a soldier gleefully participating in the torture of people at Gitmo?

2 weeks ago | Likes 198 Dislikes 3

was he a solider? i thought he was like some lawyer with the military and he was like "no problem here!"

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Seldom mentioned, but known and important to remember. It sheds light on his current decision-making processes.

2 weeks ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Holy shit no, thanks for mentioning

2 weeks ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

I do remember. Do people remember when Obama decided not to prosecute him and the likes of him? The worse people rose to the top thanks to that. We are in this situation thanks to one side covering the other's sins. Realize that and go vote in your primaries.

He was a naval lawyer https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/apr/28/ron-desantis-guantanamo-bay-allegations I don't like the guy...but I did a quick Google search to check

Who gleefully participate in torture at Gitmo.

Probably. Wouldn't put it past him.

dont forget how they used dogs on prisoners

Only a small fraction of the photos ever surfaced. The Obama administration fought against releasing more of them because they said it inflame anti-American sentiment abroad and place Americans at risk.

Well they can mark down those efforts as failed because anti American sentiment is bigger than ever.

Joke's on them, failing to release the photos and fully detail the scale and scope of the abuse only makes people hate them more. The guy who was instrumental in creating the SERE (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) training for U.S. servicemembers, that was reverse-engineered to torture detainees at Guantanamo Bay was apparently appalled. If even your current and former soldiers are disgusted by your overhead policies, you need to reexamine yourself, they're usually the biggest patriots...

For sure, but there's a reason the USA is among the countries who haven't joined the ICC or ratified the Rome statute. Even if Trump is the one who's imposed sanctions on the ICC and some of its judges and prosecutors, it's not a new thing that the US refuses to be held accountable by anyone. He is more blatantly the bully, and does it openly and shamelessly, but it's not new. Claiming to be leaders of the free world and acting like it are two different things.

Agreed, it's been a persistent problem.

The fact that military personnel acts so unhinged, that should be the priority of what needs fixing. Not the publication of evidence.

2 weeks ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 3

yes - truly

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Too many humans are unhinged, they gravitate to jobs that historically allow shit like this. I know soldiers who were in the gulf war and the stories they tell me is why I didnt say I have friends who were in the gulf war

All my active duty and retired "friends" and family are ABSOLUTELY unhinged flag waving racist cunts. They all live in this weird bubble of denial that I have no way to pop.

Yet...

I am more talking about the implied rape and murder of civilians. Borderline torture stories etc. Again why I reiterate not friends, former co-workers etc.

The Obama administration? Whaaat? But the people here say that guy was a saint! Seriously, his administration ensured none of the war criminals in high places got as much as a slap on the wrist. Instead, he fought hard to keep the unconstitutional spying apparatus that Snowden showed us. The truth is Obama managed to protect the establishment very well and nothing more. If we get another Obama after this, we are all screwed.

Obama had pretty good domestic policy, but his foreign policy was highly questionable in a lot of respects. That said, being good at half is better than what we have now, which is an administration that is fucking obliterating all standards of both foreign and domestic policy, alienating us from allies, aligning us with fascistic, totalitarian states, and destroying our country at every possible level.

I fucking hate that he promised to shut down Guantanamo and then... did not do that.

2 weeks ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I hate that he said he’d enshrine abortion as a day one priority and then once in office it became “no longer a priority.”

2 weeks ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He was just another neoliberal, never a progressive. Him being able to get elected as a black man was a sign of progress, but his actual positions and policy was never progressive

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He found an excuse for not doing that. He found an excuse for not doing a lot of things actually. But he never had to find an excuse to protect the establishment. Hmm. And, looking at the downvotes I get every time I mention this stuff, he still has plenty of fans. We are screwed.

For what it's worth, I think the down votes are more because of your framing than Obama himself. For example, the OG comment shines a bad light on Obama and people up-vote it. You swoop in trying to shove a right-wing, sarcastic comment in (which seems intentionally made to somehow make what's currently happening seem okay by comparison) and then whine you get down-voted.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Last point: the people here you're talking to all recognize what happened as bad. Saying that they don't, when they are literally talking about how bad it was, is disingenuous.
