For real.

It's true. I was at 7-11 last night and on their "wall of shame" was a picture of a dude with "BEEF JERKY THIEF!" written on it

Beef is fundamentally something like 6x as expensive to produce as most other meats. Expect the price to keep rising.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at all these jerky experts

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's just more cost effective to get a dehydrator (or jury rigging to cut even more costs) and make your own at home.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get mine from Savagejerky.com it's priced fair

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's 8.99 for the SMALL bags here, and 3.29 for the single strips.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We have a rule in my family. No eating beef jerky in the car on road trips. Stinks up the whole vehicle in a matter of seconds

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I once got some for 25 cents an ounce. $6 for 24 ounce bags. Bought the whole case. Must have been in prepper food stockpile.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eat a bag of Dicks my good sir ill keep my Jack links

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's a school nearby selling it to kids for nearly $2 a little bag!!! If I was a parent to one of those kids I'd be talking to the 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Food Service Director and ask them how they can live with themselves by putting that on the shelf. Yes let's take the kids for all they got

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Make your own and see how much it costs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it just me or does it look like he has balls on his chin

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

DAMN STRAIGHT

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The place near me has it for 3.99 for 3 oz... Which isn't too bad...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If it's tender and tastes great and in great quality, no price is too high, unless they cheap out on the quantity -.- it's blasphemy

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you try and make your own you will see how much labor is involved hence the cost

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just hate that most beef jerky brands are loaded with sugar. Ick!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i use this. saves a lot of money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3JetOoEngs&feature=share

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not really when you consider that for every pound of meat turned into jerky, 80% of the weight is lost during dehydration.

9 years ago | Likes 161 Dislikes 6

It's closer to 66%.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What happens if put it in a glass of water? Does it turn back into a pound of meat again?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yes it will not

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Cool

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

80% of meat is water? Goddamn

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never tried beef jerky, but I always see that stuff everywhere.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm Dutch, in the Netherlands it's not widely available. Looks yummy :D Maybe there's import stuff but I've a feeling it's way overpriced.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Let me look up meat shipping laws. If I can get you some, I will.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just recently made some jerky. Took some pictures along the way and am probably going to make a post about it. Lots cheaper homemade.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

showmeyour... jerky.

I should not have clicked. Now I want jerky.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My Dad makes the most amazing venison jerky ever. I don't hunt but I look forward to deer season every year just for that reason.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Mm can't wait to get some deer jerky this fall! Cousin of mine makes some good stuff as well

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You should learn to hunt. Homemade jerk is pretty fucking epic.

9 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 5

I mean, sure, that's an option, but I might just put that lower on my list than trying to find £25/m in my budget somehow.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh lawd, that venison jerky!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Learning to hunt isn't the hard part, it's the fucking epic jerky making that is.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Both parts are fun though!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In Diesel Mech class another student brought in deer jerky from his own doe He shot. Heavenly good shit.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yup allows you to know exactly what's in it, where it came from, extra satisfying knowing you made it yourself too

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You should trying making it from your own children. Don't get much more homemade than that.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Too stringy

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you know that beef jerky is the most expensive meat there is? Do the math. Filet Mignon ~ $14.00lb. Beef Jerky > $16.00lb.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Jerky is a refined product. It's like saying smoked salmon is a more expensive fish than salmon.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Jerky has also lost 70-80% of it's weight due to dehydration.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Quality (meat) is costly.

9 years ago | Likes 269 Dislikes 9

For the planet? Yes.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well its not qulaity.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

that's what I said to @op 's mom last night. (giggity)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

And creating jerky that actually has a meat taste and not just 99% spices is very time consuming.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So true, but just to bad that it is usually not quality beef they use, they choose a cheaper option to keep the cost down

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My meet is quite costly, can confirm

9 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Its nice that your mother is there for you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hes got the clappers

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And cheap meat make shitty jerky.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Amen to that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whats your opinion on jack links and companies like that? Worth 7$ a bag? I don't think so.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

No way. I mean, it's not terrible--I loved it growing up--but it's night and day compared to home-made.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find it 'wetter' than real beef jerky, and also the flavor is much more mild--less of the soy sauce & liquid smoke flavor comes through.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Make your own

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 2

Could you make a how to post?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mine never tasted very good :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine were fucking AMAZING, but they didn't really end up being much cheaper than store bought. Meat is expensive AF.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad sliced his thumb three times cutting up deer meat while making our own

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've always wanted to ... Do you need special equipment?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Can also be done with some electric ovens.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've made it in the oven. slice thin, brine for 24 hours and put in oven at lowest setting.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The minimum equipment is an oven. It's easier if you have a dehydrator and a jerky gun.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks! (Nice user name by the way

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Alton Brown made one with pleated air filters and a box fan.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

After reading "Alton brown", nothing in that sentence surprised me

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tony Stark made one in a cave, from scraps.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Add a small heating element like an incandescent bulb to speed up the process. I made one in a cardboard box.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What cut of meat do you need to use?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

London broil.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend uses pot roast. Get different seasoning and marinades. He uses Worcestershire and garlic.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've heard of people using ovens on low settings, but a dehydrator is a worth while investment. $30 on amazon.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks!!! I've heard of both but it sounds like a dehydrator is the way to go!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah a meat dehydrator. They're fairly cheap though.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Any dehydrator really

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good to know!! Thanks

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah Bruh just throw that shit in the oven, 160 for a few hours bruh.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Alright this is true.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In all seriousness, make a good marinade. Let you 1/8 inch strips soak for a day, then lay them out on a drying rack. Put said drying (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in the oven at the lowest temp ya got, then stick a ball of aluminum foil between the door and the oven to stop it from shutting. done in 4h

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hmmm - thanks man!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yup yup! Glad to help. Happy cooking! OH, important note. Don't forget to flip the jerky halfway through.
