I think your go fund me is a scam... Portugal has government funded health care.

My friend doesn't understand what's going on in #3

#6 Thank you for this, it is exactly what I need today.

Just that you and @op know: Portugal has a social security system that includes healthcare. So this gofundme could possibly be a scam. I am not sure if it is, but it is a possibility.

#1. Great, now you have tigers.

I really wish people would stop posting GoFundMe pages for medical bills as "wholesome." The US's medical system is a cancer in and of itself and needs to be socialized to prevent these sorts of situations from becoming necessary.

#1 That's super cool and all, but that's less than half of a square mile

300 acres sounds like a lot. But it's only a square 300 feet on a side. Maybe 4 blocks. There are 43,560 square feet in one acre. So, 300 acres is equal to 13,068,000 square feet. If the land is square, each side will measure 362.5 feet.

300 acres = 43,560 square feet/acre * 300 acres
= 13,068,000 square feet

Square root of 13,068,000 square feet
= 362.5 feet

I'd love to replant some forests, but I can't afford the damned land to start with. I've tried to re-introduce native plants to rental properties but every single one has been destroyed after I've had to leave.

The seeds that were spread by the wildlife from your replants were able to spread, even though their parents didn't exactly thrive.

Good for you! Habitat reclamation can take many forms. Write to your city/town council & ask if they have taken steps to ensure no bee-killing pesticides (neonicotinoids) are being used on city property, including plants their greenhouse uses. Find a volunteer group that does shoreline clean-up. Talk to your local library about making a butterfly garden a project for their children's department. Once you get involved with volunteer groups, you'll meet people who feel the same as you eco-wise. :)

Genuine question here. How does health care work in the EU? I thought it was a social system.

Yeah, that charity ask is extremely suspicious. Looking into MRI costs in Portugal it seems the price should be 200 euros for a non-citizen.

Talking for Croatia: the employer pays out a portion of your gross pay to central health fund. From there diagnostic tests are paid, as well as a significant part of drugs. Some participation is sometimes required, but it's not significant. For instance, hospital stay participations are (were? not up to date) capped at 133€, 145$. However, sometimes private practice is needed. In cases where there's a long waiting list or for things with low supply in social service.

In Portugal you can usually choose to schedule tests and appointments through the National Health Service (free or almost, but there may be a few months' queue if the doctors do not mark it down as urgent) or pay to have it done privately rather quickly. It's the same in a few other EU countries. Italy is like that too.

It would require quite an extensive comparative analysis to answer that question. I can say that Switzerland (my other nationality) is often cited as being the 2nd highest healthcare cost per capita in the world, but it is still FAR below what (#1) Americans pay. The hospitals are very good in my (and my family's) experience. No one will ever die or forgo treatment because they can't afford healthcare. There's a strong social safety net in general, and high wages to offset high costs of living.

It varies from country to country.

#1 This is obviously a good thing, but biodiversity doesn't replenish overnight, and you can't plant an ancient forest any more than you can build an ancient town. It's better not to lose ancient habitats in the first place.

2 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 7

Happy earth day to that!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's true enough, but the unfortunate fact is that we've *already* lost a lot of ancient habitats. The best case is not to, but the second-best is to do what we can to reverse the damage we've done as a species.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

2 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Well as I said, it's definitely better than nothing.

26 years is a decent amount of time for a rewilding project to take hold.

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Sure, but it won't resemble the forest that used to be there for hundreds of years. At least that's the case in temperate climates, maybe it's quicker in the tropics, I dunno.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I understand what you're saying but we do need to be supportive of people trying to fix and repair damaged land. Their efforts are desperately needed.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Agreed, absolutely.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It takes 20-30 years for up to 80% of the forest to recover from logging and it takes 50-80 years for it to fully recover. Soo about 80% resembles the old forest

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But is that just in terms of tree coverage, or is it actual biodiversity?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In the UK, woodland can only be considered 'ancient' if it's been continuously wooded since 1600, because it takes centuries for the full range of species to establish themselves. A lot of people don't understand this and think it's fine to bulldoze ancient woodland as long as some more trees are planted elsewhere. Which is like saying it's OK to bulldoze Oxford or Bath because some new housing estates are being build a few miles away.
