First, a brief story

Good morning, Imgur. I got up a bit early today to make sure I had time to write this up before work, so with any luck it'll be seen and taken to heart by a few of you. It starts with a brief story but I promise that it has a point. Bear with me.

Yesterday, I went out to the stores to get some Christmas shopping done. It was busy and, as expected, the retail world was jangling with holiday songs and shopping carts. I was able to grab what I needed and head up to the registers to check out. The gentleman who scanned my items asked me the normal upsell questions, was polite when I declined and made some small talk while he bagged them up. I thanked him, he said I was welcome and I left the store.

Nothing terrible happened. No explosions or drama.

For those who haven't worked retail

When I arrived home, I sat down at my computer and looked up the store's website. I wrote a short review about the gentleman who checked me out, letting the store know that he did a good job and was very polite during the short time I was there. It took all of five minutes.

Before anyone begins claiming this is a circlejerk post: it isn't. Put the pitchforks down. Are they down? Good.

I'm telling you this not-so-entertaining story because I've worked in the customer service sector for more than fifteen years, and I can tell you that positive reinforcement from customers is rare to the point of being mythical. For those of you who have worked retail, this is fairly common knowledge. When a manager tells us that one of our customers called or e-mailed the store, we instinctively brace for bad news well before hearing what they had to say. Did we forget to scan a coupon? Are they mad because I've been having a bad day and forgot to hide it? Are they complaining because the person in front of them paid in pocket change?

For those who haven't worked retail, these are the sort of thoughts that fly through our heads because these are the sort of minimal slights that customers will call back and portray as deep, damaging insults to their very character. In general, we don't ever want to hear that a customer took the time to contact the store about us after they left.

Keep calm and carry on

Most of us don't think twice about the brief interactions we have with the people working the cash registers. We're in, we're out and we're home. But on the other side of the counter is a guy or girl who has been standing there for hours. Odds are, that cashier has had to take some level of insult from a customer during their shift that day. Someone blamed them for a price they couldn't control, or made them feel like shit for not being able to use two coupons for the same item. Someone lambasted them for not being able to break store policy just this once, or threatened to never return to the store because they were asked if they had a savers card.

Cashiers absorb a lot of shit from a lot of people having shitty days. It's the nature of a job where you see hundreds of people during an eight hour shift, and part of the challenge is not showing that slow buildup of stress to the next customer. They put their smiles back on and help the next customer.

Give a cashier a good review

So my humble request to you, Imgurians, is to consider giving a cashier a good review. Positive customer feedback is rare, and too rare for this time of year when cashiers take the most abuse. I'm not asking you to write feedback about something that didn't happen, or paint the person who checked you out as the single most amazing cashier on the face of the earth.

Be genuine. Share with whatever store you visit that you appreciated the patience of the person who helped you. That you enjoyed going through their line, or that their smile made your day a bit brighter. Little things go a long way and seemingly minor praise can leave a lasting impact with the person who receives it.

So go make someone's day a little bit better.

Thanks kindly,
GypsyJack

tl;dr: Cashiers have it rough and work hard not to show it. Put in a good review for the next cashier you meet so they have a better day.

FP Edit: Not a big one for edits, but thank you all for putting this on the front page. I hope that it ends up positively affecting the days of a few hard-working people this season. Also, send me dudes. :)

The day before Thanksgiving, we had a lady come in before close. She came in just to thank us. She gets free cookies.

Thank you. As a retail manager...thank you. You would be welcome tony store any time.

Holy relevant username! Thank you kind sir!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I can't imagine being rude to a cashier. I always smile and thank them whenever I'm being checked out.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

How you treat those in the service industry is a direct reflection of your character.

10 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

At my store, we were required to ask for reviews and they would put us on a list if we couldn't get 5 in a month.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That and nurses. Thank your nurse people.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Had a coworker moved to tears after a full day of shitty people, and one lady left him a voicemail just saying thank you.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also, do not try to haggle with the clerk. In most chain stores they have no control over the price and you're just wasting everyone's time.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fuck CVS customers. I had a lady who wouldn't get out of my face for 5¢. My manager had to give her his authorization for a nickel return

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1 Please do your surveys! Almost every store has them at the bottom of receipts and your cashiers have to have a certain number of positive

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

2 surveys a week. Where I worked wed actually get in trouble if we didn't get good surveys.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I also do this when a waiter/waitress does a good job. I tell the bosses that they need to know when something is done RIGHT as well.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

As a waitress, this is the best. People only seem to complain when they talk to the manager

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I made a woman cry once because I heaped lavish praise on her in front of her boss. It was 100% well deserved, but she was having a bad day.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My wife had sausage from the customer's pizza thrown at her because it wasn't the big chunks like from pizza hut..always be kind others plez

Cashier jobs motivated me to get a college degree...

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Night shifts at a gas station. There is no motivation in the world stronger than that.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I feel you, I quit after three months. Drunken weirdos EVERYwhere.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As an 18-year old I was threatened with physical violence when working as a cashier, because I couldn't give out any cash back..

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Had someone flip their shit on a cashier because they wanted several hundred cash back at like 8 in the morning.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Mine was at 4, but just at shift change which meant no cash in tills. He wanted 2000 kr, I couldn't, he left 1400 kr worth of food behind

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always fill out the online surveys solely because no one ever does them at my store and we get shit for it.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"What do you mean you're only trained to run a cash register!? You can't set prices at the corporate level?? WTF" -My favorite customers

10 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 1

"It doesn't have a price tag on it so it must be free!" - My favorite customers... I die a little inside everytime someone says this

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Oh man! That joke. Well, that's how I treat it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im new at Harris Teeter so I'm a little slower but ppl have been understanding and wishing me luck. Its not that hard to not be a dick.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Last year I worked christmas to make extra money for school. One lady said "thank you for working today", I cried on my break. I missed 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

2/2 my whole family (including my 3 younger sisters who I never get to see). It was a small thing, but made me feel so much better.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And do us cashiers a favor, get off your damn phones when you go through our lines. If the call is that important, checking out can wait.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I feel your pain buddy, some even has the cheek to glare at us when we "interrupt" their call with up sell questions.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Which is why I now just completely ignore them. I don't even say "Hi, how are you?"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I seldom write review, but I almost always thank service people and wish them a nice day. Always nice to brighten a day.

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Just some simple chatting and a 'have a nice day' is so easy, and yet you're the kind of customer they will remember.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A woman once wrote a hand written letter to her head office praising my service and help. It was 7 years ago and I still remember it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Same here. I write fucking poems when I do write reviews though. I don't want to make their day, I want to make them rememeber me.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

When customers thank me, it's usually forgotten quickly. Maybe most aren't genuine. Positive surveys are used for bigger raises/bonuses.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I once had an old lady call and complain that my shirt was too low cut. My manager couldn't keep a straight face while he was telling me.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I work in EMS, and I get spit on, cursed at, and people attempt to assault me. Still not as bad as my decade of retail experience.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I work at a jail as a civ employee so my experience hasn't gotten better, but retail and food service did an excellent job preparing me.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Where I work, they include customer survey scores as part of the calculation for quarterly bonuses. Of course, people only call when angry..

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 1

Best Buy?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Save money. Live better. ;)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So.... quarterly bonuses go to those who get the least calls?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OSAT/NPS?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah people are more than ten times likelier to report a bad experience, than a good one. It's a well known fact.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Good retail clerks shouldn't be so noteworthy. I was a clerk for about ten years and did a good job. I get frustrated with those who suck.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The complaint isn't about that. The complaint is that companies know customers only call about bad service, so when they base their 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

annual raise on customer experience reviews, they'll be 'justified' in giving a shit raise. 2/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU! I've been in retail (grocery) for 8 years. Another issue is sexual harassment from customers!!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

We have this one customer who comes in almost every day who I have dubbed creepy middle aged guy. I know how you feel.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I worked in grocery as well. It was one of the most brutal retail jobs I had as far as customer abuse. Cheers.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Work at Target. Woman was upset with a customer service employee. She goes out to the parking lot, pissed on her hand, (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

comes back in the store and slaps him in the face. (2/2)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Dude, I would get fired and arrested for losing my shit and going medieval on a bitch for that. Fuck that feel horrid for that guy :(

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah well I mean that is assault you should have a right to defend yourself.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

not being able to defend yourself at work infuriates me. had a coworker who got punched last Black Friday sale..just had to take it. ಗಾ ﹏ ಗಾ

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My gf had a grown ass man tell her she had a big head and a stupid face when she wouldn't sell him a $400 Keurig for $100 Thanksgiving night

10 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

If someone sees clerks as 'help' or less important than themselves, they lead a very sad life. Shake it off!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I was once called a "spick" for not having a certain TV in stock. I'm half Filipino, half white.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

During my time in retail I had two people tell me they were going to sue me because of our return policy on certain appliances.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yup! A couple weeks ago I had a customer scream at my manager that she was an attorney and going to sue her because she was supposed to 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

give her store credit for her return since it was most of the way she paid but she wanted the cash

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh man. I am glad I got out of retail. Loved the people I worked with and some customers were great, just couldn't stand the bad ones.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whet everyone should do for the holidays? Not lose their shit on service industry/retail. 99.9% of the time it's someone else's fault

10 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 0

Except the weird old lady I used to work with who would refuse to use the belt and made customers scoot their stuff toward her.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I had the pleasure of permanently ejecting a person from being our customer just because she swore at one of my colleagues. Zero tolerance.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also, instead of apologizing to a cashier for coming to their store on a holiday, thank them. When people would apologize to me it would 1/

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

set a bomb off in my already stressed mind, because WE would not be there if YOU weren't. That's how I felt, anyway. So, thanks are nice. /2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Interesting perspective. I've apologized for creating the demand that forces people to work the holidays or late at night.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well, what I meant is most don't apologize for being there, they apologize for me having to work that day, lol.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That said I'd never buy anything or call a call centre on the actually holidays (ie. Xmas day, New years day). Been the worker, it sucks.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I had to contact customer service on the 12th because I didn't receive gift wrap on my order when I ordered it. The poor guy, he was so 1/

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I worked retail when I was younger. Positive customer comments were absolutely a myth.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

In the past year I was complimented twice by a customer... On the other hand I was shat on at least 30 times in ways it still haunts me

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I can honestly say I've never been shat on.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You know what absolutely fucks me off? I work in retail and at least 3 times a week I'll help a customer and effectively save them £5-10 1/?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Need a small spare part from my workshop? Doesn't have a barcode or price attached but is worth £2-3, yeah, on the house from me. Need 2/?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

a small fix done but it's 5 mins when our min. labour option is 15? Yeah have a nice day, because it'd take longer to book it onto the 3/?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

computer system. All I do is give them a business card and take 1 minute to leave some feedback. Only once has someone taken the time 4/5

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to do that. Damn right they got a discount the next time they came back. /rant. 5/5.
