Some states, like IA, SD, and KY, can take even more.

Just an update to this: some states can revoke for ANY debt including child support/alimony.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

At some point poor people in this nation are going to have to stop listening to the people who say the way out of poverty is by harder work.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes iowa, our government is so fucking stupid and behind the times it's disgusting.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Im not surprised mass is on that list....

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The US has some strange laws

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep Texas took away my Vocational Nurse license when I fell behind on my student loans. Fuck I'm so sick of the U.S

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They can also take professional licenses away, such as nursing.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s about to be like this in Germany also, it’s the most retarded thing ever. You just gonna make even less money. Fuckin politics

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So... if you're struggling to pay your bills, they'll take away your means to make money so you can pay said bills. Brilliant.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Land of the free...provided you have a license.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I work at a high school, and they take kids drivers licenses away if they miss 10 unexcused days of school.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That is literally two weeks in an academic year, that's a lot of school to miss without a good reason for it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Texas can also take your professional license, if you have one.

College and the Federal Reserve - the biggest shams out there.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thanks god I was not born in the USA. Shit policies all over the place. One truly wondes how they could one day make us belive they were n°1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Article says that it's mostly used on the most egregiously delinquent debtors; but still far too many people get screwed.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Wtf is wrong with you America?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WTF AMERICA?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There are federal programs to get your student loan out of default for as low as $5 per month to avoid wage garnishment and tax offset.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

where?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Google federal loan locator #. See who is handling your loan, how much you owe, and what status they are in.

Most states now can take licenses for not paying child support

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Hmm, struggling to make money are you? Here, we'll make it more difficult for you!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, those payments will be a whole lot fucking easier to make when they can't drive to work. Jesus Christ, this is stupid.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

To be clear, I mean the law is stupid, not the post.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Can we pleaase. Please fight student loans next? Or change the discussion to have them easier to pay back?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Personally I am all for a bail out. Student loans ruin lives and some of us have been paying for over 10 years for poor financial (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Choices made as a kid guided by an ignorant parental generation. At this point it’s like cruel and unusual punishment

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I went back recently. I don't regret it, I'm much smarter and it trained my brain, but the amount of staggering. We need people who care

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

instead we get Devoss

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

To be the devil’s advocate: Borrowing money without understanding the terms is stupid. If you understand and don’t care that’s like theft.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well it’s not quite that simple with student loans. You don’t know exactly what you are getting like with a car or a house. You are (1/3)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hoping that the investment pays off and your education gets you the job and income that was promised to you by the school. Plus dan entire

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Generation was pressured into taking out these loans by well meaning parents who thought college was the best path at all costs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It was an amazing path for the parents. It’s changed and the parents didn’t keep up. A lot of kids got very bad advice from their parents.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Even if college takes me forever, I've vowed not to take student loans. I've heard enough bad things.

8 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 3

That's how I feel now I'm afraid I might have to and I'm scared shitless.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah they suck, but no reason to put any big life decisions on hold. I did it, got a good job and am paying them off slowly. Is what it is.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Just go to community college for basic classes first then transfer for major.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are still better than private loans

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm going tgis route. Ive earned my associate's and am debt free. I couldn't afford full time, and I won't for bachelor either. Took longer.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need to balance that with the lost earning potential by not getting a degree sooner.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It's not bad if you play it smart. Don't max out loans and go to a super expensive school. Community colleges are a big help too

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

yeah i'm going to community college, hopefully I can get a job with an associate's degree

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I went to cc for first two years, coworker went to prestigious school. Our salaries are equal.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Problem is, most 17-18 year olds are immature morons who have to decide the rest of their life. It's a fucked up system.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

CC for the win

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The hard this was that 10 years ago when I went to school, we didn’t understand the repressions yet. It’s just what people did. (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

I definitely won’t advise my kids to take out any student loans in the future and anyone would be wise to avoid them now. Good on you!

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

You only take loans that you are very confident you will be able to pay back in a timely manner

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But we want people to take reasonable risks. A few percent will always run into serious problems or get sick and be unable to pay.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well at the time many people took out loans they were. Economic downturns were unforeseen and the reality is 18 year olds shouldn’t be (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Making those choices. I had no real concept of what I was getting into, and my parents didn’t either since things were so different for them

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Brilliant. Then how are you supposed to get to work to earn money to pay back the loan? Politicians can be such idiots.

8 years ago | Likes 1022 Dislikes 13

*american politicians - u never really hear of any country but America implementing stupid ideas..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 8

#brexit

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

'Are there no workhouses, are there no prisons?'...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I signed a contract agreeing to pay back this huge amount of money, but expect little to no consequences if I don't"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

They read Dickens & the idea of debtors' prison made sense.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

They dont really, that's why they allow people to accumulate such debts in the first place they really don't want people to have money.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It is because almost all of them are so disconnected about how the average American lives. Remember poverty is choice here.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I'm afraid people won't realize that last sentence was sarcastic...-it was sarcastic, right?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

haha yes it was

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You’re are behind on your cell phone bill and have been disconnected use your own cell and call to have service reactivated

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

i think companies have a number to do this when you're disconnected . 411 i think, similar to how 911 still works when disconnected.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Happened to me. No service at all.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They can do that it you are behind on child support as well!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That seems childish.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The court does it for them. And they have to be very very behind. 10k+ behind in support. They can even jail you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Public transit? Your feet? Work has been around long before drivers licenses.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How many people who aren’t paying on their loans are spending $30-50/mo @ Starbucks or wasting other money? Contact lender for lower paymnt

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 45

30-50 a month? Try 30-50 a week

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

My wife had loans for rn school . We had no cable no cel didn’t go out to eat . You scrimp when your young and can relax later. It works

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Sound financial advice. Don't buy a $5 coffee so you can pay off your $40,000 debt.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

if you would stop eating all that god damn avocado toast you'd be fine...

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

$5 times 365 is over 1800$. Cable tv 2500$ a year .cel phone lunch truck dining out in general , yup $5 at a time pays off your loan

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I'll grant you that if you don't eat food and live in a cardboard box you might have more money to pay off your debts with.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

What worked for me .Eat at home bring a lunch bring thermos of coffee . Quit smoking cigarettes . Now I own two homes .

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Are you dense? 5 dollar coffee is a metaphor for unneeded luxury items.. Live within your means.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Make up your mind. Is it 5 or 4?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

what?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fun fact: Student Loans are a scam. Stop getting them.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 6

I think a lot of people now understand that, but the trouble is that so many people already have them

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

What's the difference between a student loan and any other loan?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can’t be forgiven in a bankruptcy, for one. The availability of student loans are the cause of skyrocketing tuition.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ding. Gov't made student loans easily available but took no steps to put downward force on tuition at universities. Exact same thing was->

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

done for healthcare too. If your customers can afford to pay whatever you ask because the gov't is subsidizing them, why would you not->

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

charge as much as you can? There's no incentive to NOT be expensive as fuck.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their not. They are fairly reasonable loans, but like any loan, you should only take what you are certain you will be able to repay.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

No, they are unlike any loan. They cant be discharged in bankruptcy and they will give them to ANYONE. They are a predatory scam.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yes they can be discharged, that's just false, and yeah they give them to anyone who wants to go to college. It's not their fault when >>

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Choose to accept loans larger than they should.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

18 year olds brainwashed into going to college are in a great position to make highly impactful financial decisions.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The interest rates are also incredibly high- you can get a better loan for a car

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's 4-6 percent, I would hardly call that incredibly high.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

say 5% on a $35K loan, at 10 years thats $10K in interest and $371/mon.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sallie Mae was charging me 11% on a 40k loan

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why not go with a federal student loan?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live in SD and Im behind on my student loans. I havent been harassed by the state. But I forgot to pay my sales tax and warrant was issued

8 years ago | Likes 105 Dislikes 2

I feel like in the US they make taxes intentionally difficult in hopes they can rinse people when they fuck up.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm just glad to see a couple more South Dakotans on here. No student loans for me though

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Some student loans are like the predatory loans they gave to people before the bubble burst . And They don’t have a horse in the race

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And my drivers liscense was revoked. I had to go to court and pay an additional fine to get the matter cleared up. All over $78 I forgot

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 2

From the drafting of the law(s) that allow this, to the execution, someone along the line really should have said "wait, this is stupid."

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

As a fellow south dakota, can confirm. SD is backwards on alot of things.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

We’re still in the top 2 for best Dakota in the US

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Do you own a small business? I can't figure out how one would owe "sales tax" otherwise.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think she meant income tax. She added she is a house cleaner self employed . Still not right punishment didn’t fit the “ crime”

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Makes sense then. Thanks.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Forgot to pay your sales tax? On what?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Im a cleaning lady part time

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

That sentence could be taken a couple ways

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You must mean your income taxes...

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

No sales tax back to the state for the services provided, SD has no state income tax, just federal.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You collected sales tax but didn't hand it over to the government? Yeah, it's reasonable for them to go after that.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0
