Britain's creepiest abandoned buildings

Dec 19, 2018 2:31 PM

Barnes Hospital, Cheadle

The hospital was used profusely during the war, and cared for injured soldiers and taking in traumas. Patients with tuberculosis and yellow fever were also treated in the isolation wards of the building. During its 115 years, it is believed the hospital treated tens of thousands of patients. Closing in 1999, the hospital promptly became derelict. Parts of the hospital are now undergoing reconstruction to be turned into apartments.

Barrow Gurney Mental Asylum, Bristol, Somerset

First built between 1934-1937 the first patients of this hospital were admitted in 1938, along with being commandeered by the Royal Navy during the outbreak of WWII as a Royal Naval Auxiliary Hospital. The building was used then to treat seamen wounded and injured during war conflicts or who were suffering from psychological distress, until 2006 when it closed to treat mental health disorders.

Cane Hill Asylum, Croydon, London

The hospital opened in two phases, in 1882 and in 1888 as the Third Surrey County Lunatic Asylum. Abandoned in 1991 the buildings remained derelict for nearly 18 years but at its peak it held over 3,500 patients.

Cherry Knowle Asylum, Sunderland

Sunderland Borough Lunatic Asylum opened on May 16, 1895 and around 50 years later the hospital was renamed Cherry Knowle. During WWII the Cherry Knowle hospital acted as a emergency medical service to treat soldiers injured at Dunkirk.

Hartwood hospital, Lanarkshire, Scotland

In the small village of Hartwood, the abandoned building could easily be mistaken for an empty castle or medieval church. However, this stone structure from the 1890's was an institution for the mentally ill. Hartwood Hospital closed in 1998 due to the 1990 Community Care Act. In 2004, a fire destroyed several roofs and severely damaged the west clock tower's interior.

Hellingly Hospital, Sussex

Formerly known as the East Sussex County Asylum, the building was a large psychiatric hospital and once was one of Britain's largest lunatic asylums. Opened in 1903 the vast site was an enclosed community having a farm, church and even its own railway connected to the nearby Cuckoo Line.
However in the 1990's the hospital closed and most of the buildings fell into fast decline, suffering from arson, vandalism and theft.

High Royds Psychiatric Hospital, Menston, West Yorkshire

High Royds opened 1888 as the 'West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum' in the small village of Menston. During the hospital's history, nearly 3,000 patients were living on site, sadly 900 recorded patients passed away in the asylum and were buried nearby in unmarked graves.

St Crispins Hospital, Northampton

St Crispins was a large psychiatric hospital on the outskirts of Duston village. It was established in 1876 as the Berrywood Asylum for the mentally ill and closed in 1995. Tragedy struck the hospital after WWII when a fire broke out in Schuster Ward and six patients were killed.

Both my parents are nurses and both worked at Hellingly during their training before it closed said it was weird then

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually the creepiest abandoned building in Britain is Stormont Castle. NI executive has been MIA for aaaages. Hurray functional government

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No way I'd move into a renovated hospital - that shit is asking for hauntings

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My MIL worked at High Royds when it was still open and she definitely experienced some weird shit in there.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

HOLY SHIT #1 WE USED TO HAVE RAVES THERE. They were absolutely amazing. Dudes setup separate rooms and everything, was mental.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm sensing a theme here

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been round St Crispins a couple of times. Not easily spooked but that place has bad Juju

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. As a Daventry boy I knew someone who was in there. Definately a weird place...

@Cri11z

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a feeling those asylums are needed now more than ever.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Cuckoo line" seems appropriate for a name in this case

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My MIL worked at High Royds when it was still open and experienced some weird shit there. The turned it into apartments now...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Barnes Hospital been converted to new houses. So annoyed because I wanted to explore it :(

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Went exploring in Barnes hostpital when I was younger place was creepy as fuck from the operating rooms to the tower

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fully refurbished housing complex there now

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Recognised it as soon as I saw it, looked like it was getting made in to some nice houses last time I drove past.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great architecture

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh i love old buidings like that. So much character. It makes me happy when they get renovated for continued occupation.

7 years ago | Likes 220 Dislikes 0

By the living.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You spelled *demonic possession* wrong

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Are you the devil? 'Cos that's how you'd lure your victims.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Today I learned my architecture aesthetic is “abandoned British mental hospitals”

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They are already occupied but occupants are not alive.

7 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

this! I find them beautiful.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

They tore Hellingly hospital down and stuck a housing estate on it. Lived round the corner.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sounds just like what a ghost who wants new people to haunt would say...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet, there are so many homeless :(

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

they go by Street People now

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So you're a fan of continued occupation?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I did nazi that coming

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Makes the ghosts happy too!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ya but they're owned by investors that wanna let them decay to the point they can have them demolished

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Unless they get listed, then they have to maintain them. ^_^

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

UK has some good laws covering this. Other countries not so much.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think Cane Hill is gone now. Many years ago we were going to go exploring it when we used to do that but it was too well guarded.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Apparently its now flats, brings back memories hearing cane hill

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did do the nearby Mayday Road hospital before it was torn down, that was strange, like everyone had just up and walked out at once,...

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everything was in its place and still there.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in Bristol, Barrow Gurney is incredibly eerie, for years the security booth light was kept on, with a bible placed on the table.

7 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

I am also a Bristolian, I can attest to that! Fucking creepy, also full of asbestos...

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I never stepped foot inside.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@KaityC3 let’s go

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Uh yes!! Let’s go!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I live on the edge of Hartwood Hospital grounds. My house was built for staff and celebrates its centenary soon. And yes, we have a ghost.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Tell us a story?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Traditional nurse ghost; dress, cape and cap. Nothing malicious, just stands in the hallway. Only appeared a handful of times in 25years.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who the hell is gonna want to live in those haunted ass apartments in #1?

7 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I would too

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I would, but thats my kinda interest

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'd be down for that! It's not a problem if you dont believe in ghosts/vampires/Canadians/zombies/etc

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:: raises hand ::

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the rent

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

One of the wealthier areas of the city and they look like nice apartments so probably not cheap.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My concern is the renovation of "part of it." So, I live on one side but the other side is still full of hobos and ghosts?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh wow! We actually visited St Crispins Hospital at school on a field trip. We had a buddy system for the day and my buddy was Kenny...

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...Tonks, no one liked Kenny because he kept having nose bleeds. Anyway, as we were shown around the hospital, the orderly asked who wants..

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...to be brave and see the furnace room? Without any hesitation, Kenny raised his hand and because I was his Buddy, I had to go with him...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...we were led into the furnace room, which was gloomy and warm, and we heard a scream from down the corridor, the orderly said wait here...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...and he ran off. Then Kenny the idiot started to tinker with the settings on the furnace, I said, no Kenny, stop! Then the orderly came...

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...back, led us back to meet up with the rest of the group and have our dinner. When we walked back to the school bus, we found the bus...

*creepiest abandoned hospitals

7 years ago | Likes 170 Dislikes 0

That aren't very creepy unless maybe you've never been to Europe or the UK

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I've never been to the UK but these buildings look awesome. Why don't our hospitals have huge badass clock towers?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

also not from the UK and #1 is cool af

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Almost all were asylums/psychiatric hospitals, which is likely the reason they're on this list. What is inherently creepy about such places?

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

the ghosts that still there.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People who were mentally ill were looked after there (or subjected to inhumane treatment, at least beyond current medical understanding).

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I expect many patients died in such places, but how is it so different to standard prisons at the time? I'm sure torment was endured too.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Perhaps because the mentally ill were seen in some way as being possessed. A demonic or at least otherworldly presence in their minds?

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

But surely now we know better. Perhaps it's time to detach such illusions from our fantasies.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My house is 3 doors down from where the photo of Hellingly Hospital was taken. It's been renovated. I still get some strange nightmares...

Thanks buddy! 2 years later but at least someone delivered!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s actually from the guy who lived nearby. Saw the dot and wanted to remind you.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What kind of nightmares????

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's only the one really; very occasionally I'll wake in a panic covered in sweat, usually around 2/3am.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There will be a silhouette of a tall, thin man stood in the corner of my room watching me.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm usually unable to move whilst here's there and he'll fade once my eyes start to adjust.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That, my friend is called a night terror.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Although I can't see him I know he's wearing a suit and hat (men in black kinda attire).
