This is my dad. He is a good dad. My dad is a police officer in Wichita Kansas, he's been in law enforcement for longer than I've been alive (over 20 years). Before all that he served as a Marine in Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. He has lived his life trying to make life better for everyone else around him, and I don't think I will ever be able to fully understand the mind behind the rock of a man that is my father.

I took this photo a few days ago, he had just finished his shift that day and fell asleep on the couch. I know there has been a lot of discourse over the past year against police officers so I wanted to share this moment with you all.

Sometimes it's hard too remember that those stoney men and women in tan and blue uniforms are people with families waiting for them to come home, I remember being so scared as a child because when I went to bed at night my dad was heading out the door to go to work, I remember laying in bed every night crying and praying that when I woke up tomorrow my dad would be walking back through that door. I'm still scared now, everyday in the back of my mind there is that fear, that one day I will be at work and get the call that shatters everything I have ever known.

It's hard to admit as a military/police family that there are bad cops out there but there are and it sickens me because my dad is a good man, but the reputations of him and every other good cop in this God forsaken world are ruined every day because of assholes who think wearing that badge gives them the right to hurt and kill innocent people.

Not all the people who are killed by cops are innocent nor are they all guilty. Not all cops in the world are good (they fucking should be though) nor are all of them bad.

I didn't originally mean for this post to be this long or upsetting but fuck I just wanted to make sure people see this because I don't want to lose my dad because of some other man's prejudice

You're father is good man, an honorable man. Feel lucky you get to learn from him.

Sweet. Another Kansan. Tell your dad I said thanks for doing his part. And if I see him around town, I'll be sure to show him this.

This is so beautifully wrote. I too would have that fear of him not coming through the door after his shift. He seems like an amazing man.

Get this to the FP. Thank him for his service

I've been married to a cop for 20 years. You just said all the things I have wanted to say for a long time!

I'm glad you spoke up. You keep on honoring your Dad, and I will do the same. God Bless them.

Cheers to your dad. Rest easy in that awkward position on the couch. Coffee will be fresh in the morn.

No one wants to lose their family members because of prejudice. It works both ways.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Except that black people don't get to remove their skins at the end of the day, so its not really working both ways is it?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Kinda missed the point there chief.

There are bad cops. But for every bad one, I have to believe there's hundreds like your pop.

Good and bad peeps in all walks of life. There's some real monsters out there wearing convincing people suits. Glad your dad is a good guy.

A son is probably one of the last to know if his father is a good cop or one who takes bribes, fakes confessions and shoots without cause.

Fellow wichitan here. Your dad is awesome! Even if he pulls me over he's still awesome! Give him plenty of doughnuts!

here we see the alpha male. He has failed numerously to try to reach the sanctuary of sports tv via the remote. He will try again tomorrow.

I smelled this comment when I looked at the thumbnail

There's nothing greater than the love of a child to their parent ;) Cops are humans too. People forget that.

Cops risk their lives in difficult situations where most people would fold. We give servicemen respect for doing this.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

My father was also an officer, they are good people, people just like you and me. And I will respect and defend them till the day I die.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you mean "My dad and yours are good people."? Or did you mean, "Officers are good people."? Cause clearly some of them are BAD people.

He allows all of us here in Wichita to sleep peacefully, and the force we have here is something we can really depend on. Wichitans forlife!

All the gifs & comments about rocks/minerals reference the Breaking Bad character Hank (actor Dean Norris). Definitely a resemblance there!

I never really understood that plot point with Hank, it just seemed to fizzle out.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a subtext of sorts. It explains how he kept his forensic mind sharp until he became relevant again. Without it, it would be like 1/

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that Spider Man movie, the part where all of a sudden the butler is relevant and talks? You get it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought they'd tie it in. Like Hank gets a clue because he relates something he sees to a factoid he'd learnt from studying the minerals.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tell him thanks for his service!

I second that. The good ones are more valuable than ever these days!

One of the cool things the Police Force did here in Wichita a year ago when Black Lives Matters groups were shutting down roads and (1)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Highways was host a BBQ for those protesting in order to create an open environment for a dialogue. It was wildly successful and (2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Heartening to see real steps being taken in the community to both ease tensions and address the issues. Quite proud of the Wichita PD.

Good cops should be encouraged to speak loudly against bad cops; fraternity is broken when cops go bad.

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 2

That is exactly it. Cops need to hold each other to a high professional standard.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Honestly, that's part of what I don't get about the cop and BLM debate - there seems to be some kind of codex to protect your colleagues 1/x

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2/x and corps even if they mishandled a situation. I get that there is a group dynamic and sometimes an "us vs. them" mentality, but 2/x

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

3/x it does nothing but protect those who go on a power trip because of their badge. The legit good cops suffer their good reputation 3/x

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

4/x because the bad ones get protected and citizens are anxious which kind of cop they might get pulled over by. It creates mistrust 4/x

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

5/ in the population and makes them lose support. The good ones suffer for it.
