so the bare chassis arrived

I put it into my super wide garage with plenty of work space for me

I started working towards a rolling chassis. Brakes, suspension, steering etc...

Dropped the car on to its wheels for the first, it was a Boxing Day. I won't forget that

Interior coming on as I made my own wiring loom and circuits. Some noise deadening

Engine in! A non turbo engine would of been easier

Bodywork test fit and interior in

All ready for the strict 8hr road worthy check

Passed...on to the bodyshop!

On the road and being used

Built not bought :)

Ya well I made a car out of K'NEX that almost worked.

Is this a budget mclaren F1 looks amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It does have that look to it ill admit I hear Zonda and Saleen alot as well

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My initial thought was noble!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At least from the photo, really hard to tell it's a kit. Looks *way* better than most kit cards. Nice job, OP.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Its a pretty well known kit, and extremely well built for the money.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

thanks, I really made an effort to try and stop that kit car look

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Are you an ex con that drives around with a Judge?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coyote!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

youtube search 'DDR Motorsport GT Kit Car Small Driving Clip' that vid has links at the end of it, to all the important videos

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

thanks, subbed to the channel

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I remember seeing your thread for this over on Pistonheads, Great work! What engine did you use?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Always on PH! Went with 2litre turbo, many reasons but biggest long term advantage is a 3.2l v6 will drop into the same engine mounts

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The Audi/VW 3.2 V6?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, it's the one used in the lotus Evora. Think it's a Toyota but I know it's supercharged

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fucking awesome! As a german, i applaud to you.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Accolades don't get bigger than this my friend

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I thought you Aussies just did this kind of custom building....

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

baby F1.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

looks like an F1 had sex with a S7 and then the regret lead to this fetal alcohol syndrome baby.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Baby formula.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

No he means the Mclaren F1 that this car was modelled after.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

bingo.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

With that 3S-GTE engine, you built your version of an MR2!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just built a car, no big fucking deal. Jesus, I struggle putting the straw in Capri sun.

9 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 0

he didn't built it 100% - google DDR kitcar

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dont put yourself down we've all been there; white tshirt.... orange juice everywhere

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

this made me feel better than anything anyone has said to me in these troubling times

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This looks killer. I've been saving to build a Rally Fighter. Can I ask how much this set you back having done so much yourself?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

About $40k at current xrates, that includes shipping & taxes for chassis and shell to the UK

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

nod nod thanks, good job ^_^

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love DDR and Factory Five kit cars... Mainly because they are both from Florida :D

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Factory Five isn't from Florida. They are from Wareham, MA.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just now realizing it, there was another kit car company from Florida but I can't remember who

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1. Nice car, 2. "would have", damn you!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

They need an edit button, thats all im saying

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i thought there was one, so you could request nudes? or does it only work at the top of the post? Iono. I forgive you. Nice paint too, shiny

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

O look at me im OP and I built a car. La de da. But seriously nice work! Very impressive!

9 years ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 2

lol

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

How much did this project set you back?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cost works out at about $40k that included shipping, taxes etc.. chassis and shell to UK. Up to you if you feel its good value :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's not too bad honestly, looks great!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I burnt some toast.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Factory five?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

No, but Ive heard of their cars. Nice cars

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to live a mile away from their shop. VERY nice cars!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, thought it was also

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, you got taken for a ride. My car came assembled. JK great work, love the color as well!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Thats the tiniest super wide garage i've ever seen http://a.fod4.com/misc/Cat%20Box%20Tail%20Wag.gif

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Don't know what you mean, with the shell on I must have a whole inch each side to get it in through the door

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Man, I don't know how you managed!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Liking the McLaren F1 looks! What is it like to drive?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Just about anything weighing only a ton drives like it's on rails, let alone something designed for the track like this! Jealous

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

there's a lot more to "on rails" driving feeling than just weight. early 70's 1 ton japanese cars felt like balloons and were around 1 ton.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Now, after stiffer springs, correct dampening, ride height...A dream! Firm but comfy, no banging. Power is very controllable and driveable

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

No banging? Isn't that the only reason to have a car like this?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Any videos?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Search youtube for 'DDR Motorsport GT Kit Car Small Driving Clip' that should sort you out to some other vids I have, not loads im afraid!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

what's the top speed and acceleration?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gearing gives me a top speed of about 160mph, which is fine with me. Calculators say 0-60mph 4.1secs, but i say no chance more like 4.8secs

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

bruh

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

thanks for being so informative. & amazing work, the trio would be proud

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Really? I thought it would be faster. What is the power & weight? GLA45 AMG is 4.3 0-60 w/ ~375hp at ~3500 lbs. Maybe the gearbox is the dif

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what was the overall cost so far

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Inc shipping, taxs etc.. to UK. In USD total cost was $40k at todays Xrates. Hopefully that seems good value

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

ahh yes just seen your other replies ;P so ... would you do it again? i mean if you would know the costs and hours put into before.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This was the 1st customer built one in the world, now 5 on the road. I would do it again yes, but No to build a 2nd, takes too much time!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How long did it take?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10months from chassis - to roadworthy test passed (650hrs in time), then 5months changing bits and bodywork / spraying

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Wether your driving near or far, Powell makes a pow-pow-powerful car!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How does one insure a self-made car?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Under kit car insurance and it was very cheap surprisingly

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh, cool!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

HFS, that is totally awesome!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

HFS = Holy Fucking Shit?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, Hitler Fucking Satan.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not to alarm you, but I think you misread the directions. The steering wheel is installed on the wrong side. Just kidding looks good.

9 years ago | Likes 406 Dislikes 11

The steering wheel is installed on the RIGHT side smh

9 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 7

IIRC this is based off the McLaren F1, so both of you are wrong, the steering wheel should be in the middle. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

2/2 But seeing that it's garage built in the UK, I'll agree to a right side steering wheel.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Can we all perhaps agree that it should instead have a yoke and flight capability?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I see nothing wrong here.... *sips tea

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And it appears to be going backward, too. Maybe he's an Aussie.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

maths are the same in all countries

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You mean "anywhere in the world but england and australia"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

as a clone of a mclaren F1, it should be in the middle

9 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

Came here to say the exact same thing.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

But does it have the 24 carrot gold foil engine heat shield

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

That's a lot of carrots

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

First off, @OP, it looks great! Secondly, dumb question: is it legal to drive it? Like, does it need to be licensed or inspected by someone?

9 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 2

In USA, as long as you pay your road taxes, you register these things as a "home build" and get kit-car plates in the mail. Terribly unsafe.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

USA! USA!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...airbag?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No airbag you're not allowed to fit that type of thing as an amateur

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It goes through a strict test (UK). 300 page, document to build too, It was then tested for 8hrs,tested bits you wouldnt believe!

9 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 0

In USA, as long as you pay your road taxes, you register these things as a "home build" and get kit-car plates in the mail. Terribly unsafe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That explains why I see some very unique cars around.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And by "unique" you mean gawd-awful death crates, obviously.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like....Like it's under bits?

9 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

wobbly bits

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some of the car has to be undressed to get to those bits...and they make you undress and remove bits if they cant see what they want

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

The seedy underworld of road licensing

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Elaborate?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

All edges (interior/exterior) radius checked inc buttons, gearstick etc.. All wiring secured to chassis, max every 300mm.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

How do cops know that it is street legal if they see it on the road?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's fully registered so will show on their computer system as 'DDR MOTORSPORT GT'

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That seems incredibly tedious. Sure looks worth it in the end, though!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you do it as a hobby it's might be very relaxing and tranquil

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3SGTE... what a great engine, hoping to do a project with one myself. currently doing some 1UZ and 3UZ projects. Toyota made great engines.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

yep & with these engine mounts, I can drop in the V6 2GR-FZ which is used in the lotus Evora. Problem is I like its current driveability

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What are you doing for tuning?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just the basics, boost raised and slightly better turbo with piggyback Ecu

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is fucking awesome. Price for parts in total?

9 years ago | Likes 107 Dislikes 4

I hate saying it in cash values (probably because id cry), so over here in the UK it works out at about the price of a new Ford Focus RS

9 years ago | Likes 157 Dislikes 1

Thanks, well worth it at your skill level. Not mine :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

36-40 grand depending on packages

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

How much ponies? I have an RS btw

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had to pay costs other wouldnt like having a windscreen mould made! So about £33k is the cost. Rs - nice choice ;-)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How much if you'd gotten an NA motor?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not much different, I think there would of only been £1k difference in donor car, but the power would just be too low!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

....can you just tell us? I don't know all the conversions for that.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Take 30 seconds and figure it out, you walnut.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

U cunty bloke!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Presume you're in America, so works out at about $40k with current Xrates. Before brexit probably more like $35k ha

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 1

Did you just presume their nationality?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

infact it would be higher before not lower

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's still not really bad at all considering the turbo alone was 3 to 5k of that. And that car could probably be sold for 60-80k

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

3-5k for a turbo? What turbos are you buying?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$4k to ship / import taxs to UK from america & I had a windscreen mould made that cost $4k :( but glad i did as i have a stone chip already

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

It kinda is. The Focus RS has 350hp and is more practical in every imaginable sense. Only plus I see is individuality / the process itself.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What engine did you put in it?

9 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 1

3s-gte, currently just under 300bhp, car weights just over 1 ton

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

So much better of a car now that I know what engine you're using. Great engine. Good old Toyotas

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Can trust it to just run and run! Even with raised boost!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The should be plenty to get the job done. Very nice job good sir

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks, this is the issue, 450bhp forged engine may ruin its drive-ability! Stuck on what to do!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hell yeah for just over 1 ton. I got a lil sucker punching sub 200bhp at about 1.5ton. OPs car would startle me behind the wheel

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oooo I love that engine and Mr2s. Out of curiosity were you going for what the Mr2 would've become had it gotten a fourth gen?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or did you just like the 3sgte's specs and decide to use it for that reason?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I wasnt, i think if an MR2 looked like this it would sell well lol It was spec, cost and I could work and tune the engine

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3s-gte, currently just under 300bhp, car weights just over 1 ton

9 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

Kind of like an older jdm/us MR2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is a carbon fiber chassis and aluminum engine?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

300? step it up, ya cockwombler. 3s-gtes can take a heck of a lot more. stop playin around!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I like the drive-ability, don't say fuck the drive-ability lol

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holy moly. That power:weight. I'm fairly certain it's funner to drive than a RS - A RS owner

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

The RS would no doubt be quicker especially in the twists but this does feel fast with your bump 3inches from the tarmac

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0
