READY PLAYER ONE - set in a dystopian future, yet seeming waaaaaaay better than this post trump era we are currently living in!

This is a genuinly fun book, especially if, like me you happen to be a child of the 80s! And into VR.. And games... And Anime... Really its got pretty much every bit of geek culture going for it!! Oh and it's going to be a film in 2018, with Spielberg directing!!

The audiobook is really good too - and read by Will Weaton!! (Yes, the Star trek kid!!) Who does an outstanding job!

ENDERS GAME - The film was lame, the book was awesome! Gritty and Epic in its scale, which never really transferred well to screen.. A book which will have you rooting for the hero all the way through!

DUNE - It's freaking DUNE guys!! C'MON, you don't minded me to explain this.. Just read it so the spice can flow!!

https://youtu.be/2B6jgkcANRE - But check out this classic YouTube dub of the movie. So that when you read the book - the character voices will sound like theirs!! Plus, it's funny as hell!!

JURASSIC PARK!! Did you know this was a book?! Me neither, but I have to say, it puts a clever Spon on the film and start with mystery and then builds up to epic proportions!! Read it to fill in the blanks from the film. It's awesome.

FOUNDATION - I read this quite a while ago, but it resonated with me so much, it's made the list. It's quite Sci-fi heavy so don't be put off by high brow sentence structure. The pay off towards the end of the book is what make it all worth while..

I ROBOT - Will Smith ain't around in this one.. But the book is better off without him. It's probably the book that most writers start with for inspiration amd for food reason.. It kicks the whole genre off, so start with this book first so that when other Sci-fi authors pay homage. You know where they're coming from.

THE FOREVER WAR - kinda like starship troopers. But this one feels more grand in scale.. I also sense a little of 1984 conspiracy in here too.. Like a shadowy force controlling the publics thoughts.. Very good read!! And fun to boot!

Ernest Cline's newest book Armada is also video game related and a really good read! Set in modern day, with lots of timely references.

I would also recommend The Mortality Doctrine Series by James Dashner

'Speaker for the Dead" in the Ender series is one of my all-time favorites.

I love all of them!!

I would like to add old man's war

I just read cats cradle and sirens of titan. Cats cradle was good, but sirens man. Sirens was incredible.

Chrono Synclastic Infundibulum - Vonnegut is my favorite. If you haven't read Breakfast of Champions, try it - it's a different, but great

Armor by John Steakley definitely belongs on this list.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Everything about Ready Player One is terrible. It blows my mind that anyone enjoys it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitely one of my favorites, and I'm absolutely stoked that it's coming to the big screen, directed by the king of the 80s himself.

"Jurassic Park - did you know it was a book ?!" ... I feel my age today.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah a 14 year old posted this. At least he reads!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're living in a trump era, not a post-trump era.

Armor !!!!!

Most Asimov books and short stories are really awesome if you're into sci-fi. Also, Crichton, the guy that wrote Jurassic Park, made the...

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

...original Westworld movie in the 70's. So without him we probably wouldn't have the awesome HBO show.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

He also wrote The Andromeda Strain and Sphere. Both amazing books with mediocre, at best, movies.

And Congo! Mr. Holmolka, stop eating my sesame cake. STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!

Read neuromancer then get some friends together and play Shadowrun

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wrote a book similar to Ready Player One, apparently people like it. It's in my profile if anyone's interested.

Dude that's awesome! Would love to read it :)

'Do androids dream of electric sheep?' is another good one. It's the book that the film 'Blade runner is based on and it's my favourite book

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

Key word is "based"

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Still and transfixed, The electric sheep are dreaming of your face

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes! I was stored too not see that one listed.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love the author and loved the book, but in my humble, strictly personal opinion, I enjoyed watching the movie over reading the book

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

By my favorite author!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So what you're saying is you love Dick.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Well, I love Dick books...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not a big fan of Ready Player 1. It's more of a masterbatory tour of 80s tech - a kind of trashy chick novel for geeks.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

As a casual fan of the genre I would agree. But that's prob why I did like it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Forever War is a great read. The sequels drop off in quality . Imo

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It has also been made into comic books. Pretty damn good too imo.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do you do a sequel with that ending?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah so agree with that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So much this, whole trilogy.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also check out the Old Man's War series

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love Jurassic park. Read it so many times the book fell apart. Try the lost world too, it's just as good.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1/2 After the movie came out I read the book, and then read Lost World before the sequel film was released (I was 8 or 9). I was so freakin

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 excited for the Lost World movie, and then so incredibly disappointed in the film. They left out brilliant plots, and just invented shit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have a downvote for starting off your post with "lol trump amirite?"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

... that everybody has already read

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Anybody read The Expanse series or the Far Star Trilogy?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I read the first four of The Expanse last year. Very much enjoyed my time in that universe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cool. I might pick that series up after I finish Old Man's War

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Agreed. Also I would suggest "Old Man's War" by Scalzi if you're into future-military sci-fi like "Starship Troopers."

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Just finished the 5th book. Awesome series

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Redshirts by Scalzi is fucking hilarious.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Old Man's War was amazing !

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good list. I would add Hyperyon and some book of Arthur c Clarke since you already have Asimov in there

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hyperion needs to be on this list

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fall of Hyperion was confusing as fuck. Idk if I missed something and am really stupid or what.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First one was awesome though and I still found enjoyment in the second. The Shrike is one of my favorite characters in fiction

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh. Read the whole thing. Wasn't that great in my opinion.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn I new I forgot to add a picture!! Yep it was on the list!! The blending of Sci fi and religion with a hulking great monster is immense!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup! It's one of those books that you have no clue what's going on then it ends and you just sit there absorbing it and it hits you

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson is about to become very relevant, as is William Gibson's Neuromancer

9 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

Right Author, not best book. It's all about 'Cryptonomicon' I think it may be my favorite book of his.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think Count Zero is better than Neuromancer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Eh, really? I could see an argument for Pattern Recognition since it's so different from his other stuff, maybe.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it kinda is but it doesn't have a one man rasta army with a shotgun. Maelcum FTW.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Snow Crash is awesome, But Reamde is my personal favourite from his body of work.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have read it and I completeley disagree.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not my fav, but I liked it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Why is it about to become relevant? Because all jobs are going to machines?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Very small government and a ruling oligarchy in the US might be in the near future.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Multinational corporations rule the dystopian future.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Augmented reality is going to be a huge deal in the next few years, and Stephenson himself was recently hired by Magic Leap.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, the mafia has bought out all the pizza places.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

+1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, if its the Italian mafia then that's ok. They make the best pizzas.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No love for Roland. Thankee sai

9 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 3

The quality of the series nosedived after King got hit and got sober. The ending was phoned in, too. THERE I SAID IT

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Come comalla, Do ya!!!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm keeping my hopes low for obvious reasons.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

These are more hard sci fi. DT is kind of a Scifi fantasy supernatural western.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I only say this as I am partway through 5th... and it's all encompassing lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's what I was thinking

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a tough time classifying The Dark Tower as any one genre, and I think that's why we don't often see it on sci fi lists.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

This is a year late but I classify it in the genre of "Garbage".

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Back necromancer! Movie: yes. Books: very mixed.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man I got them for Christmas and I'm halfway through book 4, it's damn good. ... ..... but I think it has to be called fantasy. Not scifi.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oooh! Don't forget; there is a 8th book in between 4 and 5. The Wind Trough the Keyhole. Don't miss to read that one cronologically too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's both. and its also a western.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would argue it is primarily a fantasy. There are certainly western motiffs, and sci-fi elements, but it's a fantasy epic at its heart.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is fantasy but there definitely sci if elements to the story/plot. It's a hard one to put in any one genre.
