Typical street checkpoint in Mosul. The Iraqi national police (in blue camo) are the ones who did all the actual checking, we just served as backup in case they were attacked.
Edit: To answer the main questions I've been asked, these are all from 2004-2009, I was a 19D, and most civilians didn't mind that we were there. The city of 1.5 million people had an average of 33 IED attacks a week when we took over (mostly against civilians and non-military government agencies), and that was down to just 6 a week when we left.

IED blast

Abrams pulling an observation post

Hellfire hitting thhrough NVG

View from the driver's seat of an Abrams firing

IED blast from the air

And from the ground. Buried too deep, went up instead of out.

Abrams gun sight view

Downtown Mosul

The Saddam Mosque, Mosul. ISIS was using it as a VBIED/IED factory in 2016

Another market street, Mosul.

Prescription ballistic glasses meant the guy on the left looked like a dork all the time.

When the rainy season hit the whole city flooded for about a week,

Oldtown Mosul. This is a normal street there, barely room for a donkey cart. And these wider streets marked off the edges of neighborhoods.

And that's an open sewer down the middle of the street there. The area predates city-wide sanitation.

that orange and white car is a taxi. Some days every third call would be one, and we'd get warnings to "Be on the look out for a potential VBIED, in an orange & white car" It was a little nerve-wracking.

We had different reporters along with us for most of our deployment, though I think most of them were from New Zealand and Australia.

One of our platoons decided to cross a drainage creek, instead of using the bridges. They didn't make it across all the way. Remember the open sewers earlier? Guess what that black stuff is.

The tow hooks they had to tie the cables on to were under all that junk. I think there was some industrial sewage in there too. Everyone who had to get in it burned their uniforms afterwards, and they burned green on a normal wood fire.

They thought they could cross that creek because it was pretty narrow. And one bradley did make it, but it wasn't firm enough for all of them.

Within the neighborhoods of Oldtown, this was the average street size.

One of our scout platoons had a near miss from an IED. Light concussions all around.

A dust storm blowing in during a random security stop.

Another truck that hit an IED. They managed to take off a good portion of the rear axle. Concussions and tinnitus for all.

A Kiowa attack helicopter. They were our second choice, as the Apaches could hit more accurately, and from further away.

The Tigris hydroelectric dam north of Mosul

The hydroelectric dam again.

The only time our mortars got to fire their tubes was at the test range in Kuwait.

This was a dumb mistake. the spare roadwheel wasn't tied down and flew off, destroying this car. The driver was reimbursed for it.

Destroying an old mine, without EOD.

This is the troop section of a cavalry bradley, the troop screen is currently showing the driver's thermal camera. It could be switched to the gunner's view or the commander's optic, but not the GPS map for some reason.

Cleaning up the aftermath of a VBIED. We missed Thanksgiving dinner because of this.

Investigating an IED crater.

Sincerely, thank you for your service.

Remember that whole Military Industrial complex thing Eisenhower warned us about? Yeah, this is a symptom of that disease.

Fuckin Hesco barriers, should have bought stock in that company

8 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yea. Sometimes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s always weird seeing other deployment pics. Some of those could just as easily have been mine.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

Where's you PT belt private?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

They would’ve made it through that creek if they had their PT belts. I bet they didn’t hydrate enough either. Or change socks.

I was in a unit with Kiowa's when they retired them, most of the guys are still upset about it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

terrible decision. Army want to force a new scout helicopter

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've always been told the reason was the Apache can do everything the Kiowa can, but Apaches always seem to be in short supply.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

because the apache is constantly down for repair

You wanna know what a "shit hole country" looks like? Well, here it is...

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 7

Thanks to war

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Nah, it was a shit hole long before that.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 7

You are obviously unfamiliar with Iraq.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Talafar 02-03, Balad 05-06. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

What were you doing in Iraq months before the invasion?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

B Co 4-101 Avn in Talafar and you're right it couldn't have been 02. Redeployed in Dec 03 so had to be just 03. 30 years. Dates are a B.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Tal afar was 04-05, eagle troop, 2nd squadron

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3D ACR that is...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, that and the part where Iraq didn't start until March of 2003, so how someone was there in 2002 is a source of confusion to me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Question: how loud does the main gun on an AFV sound from INSIDE the vehicle?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you don't have the crew headset on, you aren't going to hear anything but the engine and gun.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotcha. I've seen a flak 88 firing at a demonstration, that felt like my teeth were gonna rattle out of my head. Is inside better or worse?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A bit better, still will deafen you without hearing protection

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We remember him around here. It was a big deal when he was killed. I drive along the section of interstate renamed for him quite often.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

he was a really laid back dude, always think about him when i go to the gahanna library. cause we use to have to go there for HS homework

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been 13 yrs for me OIF 2, I can smell it now.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

OIF2, 2004! I barely find anyone who went that really, but there were 130k if us there at the time. Everyone I talk to went later.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep, DCUs w/ scrap yard armor for our vehicles. We built Kalsu under daily mortar attack....I got 5 combat patches and a CAB.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

04' for me as well, I remember driving up from Kuwait with sandbags in the bottom of our M225s.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Combat engineers...we had hook on armor on the plastic doors of the HMMV, with plywood and sandbags and box to sit on for the saw gunner.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

MP here. They had somehow attached rusted steel plate to the outside of our doors as well, I was on the MK19 sitting on an inch wide strap.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's your MOS @countseven

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was 19D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cav scout good for you bro. 35L then 94D didn't see the action I bet you saw

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Basically infantry

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As far as what we actually did? Yea. Training's really different. Infantry gets more training on straight up fights, cav scouts get a >

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

>lot more training on how to be "knives in the dark" on both a strategic and tactical level.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was a joke. Former 11Bang bang.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know IED.. but what is a "VBIED"? 'Vehicle Bound'?

8 years ago | Likes 119 Dislikes 0

Vehicle-borne

8 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 1

It's vehicle born. See when 2 cars love each other very much....

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Ah, awesome. Thanks. :D

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was going to say Vehicle-Based. As for the display only having the two views but not the GPS/map...blame the requirements guys...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I blame the Selective Service. They STILL don't trust grunts with maps.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yay! I guessed correctly.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You sure it's not Vengaboys? I'm pretty sure VB is Vengaboys. Y'know, cuz "BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM" and all that.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I thought it was Very Big IED :P

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

Lol like a supermassive black hole

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’m going to start using this now at work when VBIEDs are mentioned. Thank you so much

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can pronounce the letters, but if you wanna sound sound like a joe, we all pronounce it "V-bed" / "V-bid", depending.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My first thought was "very bad"

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Those guesses aren’t right but they’re also not wrong.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You drink rip-it on a regular basis?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Only when I'm feeling nostalgic.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Some stores carry it ! Haha.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

True! wal-mart near me had it in the discount isle. Picked up a few cases. Gotta let it get piss warm before u drink it for authenticity.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And only at like 3Am after sitting on post for seven hours ! I like to dig a hole and sit in it with my AR and poncho liner.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I find it tastes best in there. Set your alarm to a minaret singing morning prayers. Lol
