My guess is that that has more to do with it being claimed to cure headaches than something from over a hundred years later.

Using the French way of decimalizing the clock, we'd end up with decimal seconds that are 0.864 seconds (current) long, or 15.74% faster.
IWannaShowYouThis
2/ Yes, it's weird, but 13.6% shorter is 15.74% faster.

It's an account separate from a checking account and often makes it harder to move your money out of in return for infinitesimal interest.

The one about the odds of repeating a sentence is misleading. That statistic includes 16 word random nonsense strings.

That being said, Melania's speech writer definitely plagiarized from Michelle's.

Food-for-thought; maybe the kid's family is just a bunch of retards?
SwiggityDiggitySwoo
IIRC, there was speculation that the family was responsible for the kid's disappearance so they might've gone along to reduce suspicion?
AvariceAeternna
As the other said, The Imposter (2012) was about this. I'd recommend watching EveryFrameAPainting's video on it on YouTube afterwards
TheAdventuresofStealy
There's a decent documentary on it, I think it was called The Imposter. If anything the family came across as willfully ignorant.

Maybe instead of sparing the shooters feelings its to make them feel like they can shoot without harming the person in front of them.
TheTimeless
I think it's a little misleading, you would know afterward, but very very few would take the shot if they knew 100% they had the live (1)
TheTimeless
round, but if they didn't know for sure, they're more willing to shoot, because they didn't make the decision to kill someone, it was random

I think it's more to get the soldiers who aren't psychopaths to shoot without wasting too much time, than about feeling guilty.

#2: A gun firing a blank has a much different recoil (almost no recoil, from what I understand) than a gun firing a live round.
FoxDancerStudios
I can attest to this
BlackIC
Having fired blanks and real guns, this is true
Murvel
This is true. Newtons 3rd law and all that. No bullet - No recoil. Atleast not nearly the amount of kick a live round would have.
LavaAxe
Our blanks had a wooden pellet as a bullet and the weapon had a stopper at the end of the barrel that disintegrated the pellet
Murvel
We had those aswell during my service in the army. Great for getting your rifle really dirty really fast!
swinglinered
Overload the blank?
CarnivorousRabbit
Doesn't matter, since no weight is pushed out of the barrel, there will be no "weight" pushing back at the gun: Newtons third law
swinglinered
Expanding gas shooting out of the barrel?
CarnivorousRabbit
The gas has no real mass to it though, meaning it's just pushed out at the blink if an eye. Guns are not made to be rockets.
randomthoughtsaccount
Fun fact! A blank feels totally different than a live round so you would 100% know if you killed the man or not.

AustinBenji
Isn't this why they've got the one AND the many? Could have been you, but there could also have been several others.
CthulhusGreasyBallsack
Well they could just lie and SAY that one person shot a blank, if nobody had done it before, nobody would know there is a recoil difference.
Treblaine
There are many sorts of blanks, the ceremonial blanks (which are also designed to be much quieter) and blanks which have as much recoil.
Aepsy
Either way you shot to kill. Even in denial you have to be an idiot to not understand you meant to take their life. Why even have the job?
MinorityOpinion
Usually you'd have no choice - you can't quit the Army, and can't refuse a legal order.
BuzzJump
and they do not cycle so if using semi or fully automatic weapons they would have to cycle each time
ThatIrishLass
As a reenactor who's fired both from the same gun, I can confirm this.
grenzdebil
Was hoping to see a comment like this. Thank you for your sanity.
SoThenThisAssholeSaid
Except these rounds were identically loaded with a wax plug, and only handed over loaded and closed.
Klingon00
That would have to be one heck of a wax slug to equal the mass of a lead round. At that point, it might be just as lethal.
13Alpha
I have loaded primer only rounds with a canning wax "slug" and shot them in my revolver. They will penetrate well into a phone book.
SoThenThisAssholeSaid
So it would feel nearly identical, and when everyone fires at once good luck hearing the difference.
NameNotFoundException
Can't really compare modern tech with dated tech. While there may be a massive difference now, was that also true back then?
ThatIrishLass
Also as someone who reenacts with an Enfield 1853 rifled musket, yes. A live round has more kick when you fire, because of Newton's Third.
springking
I would just aim at the balls so I would know if its a fake
FriskyDing0
Brilliant. This man is a problem solver.
Theothercword
Because this is true I always assumed it was so they could claim they shot the blank to others. But likely knew the truth themselves.
OverlordEd
Silly considering the people who do the firing squads are generally supposed to be soldiers, who...well shooting people is their job
ToastyMozart
I mean the circumstances are pretty different. Shooting someone who's shooting back tends to feel pretty different to executing someone.
twfeline
In the heat of the moment, and with the benefit of the doubt, you get the same outcome. Besides, what else are you going to do?
grenzdebil
Except in this case you still cannot be sure which bullet was the killing one, even if yours hit. That is the second "way out".
deadknightdistrict8
Every movie I have seen don't know about this.
bubbasparxx
That's a not so fun fact :(
ErinFromTheOffice
Plus, what if you were doing it because you really wanted to kill someone?
twfeline
Unless you've recently been firing a lot of real rounds, there is no way you could tell the difference.
CarnivorousRabbit
Yeah, because you can't possibly notice the difference between no recoil and a fucking kick to your shoulder, right?
ThatIrishLass
It's not 'no recoil'; more like a light shove versus getting punched, there.
CarnivorousRabbit
True, it feels more like the difference between a .22 LR and a 6.5×55mm
ThatIrishLass
This^

grenzdebil
Again - using people who are not familiar with a rifle for a firing squad? Seriously?
CarnivorousRabbit
Firing squads were not "normal" people iirc. They were basically executioneers, and since they shot people rather often, they'd've felt
CarnivorousRabbit
both blanks and live ones.
PresidentBolbi
But if EVERYONE has the bullet loaded, no one will truly know which shot killed the person :D
twfeline
As long as there is a reason to doubt, it serves the same purpose.

Most police agency's use a 30-30 bolt action rifle which most people don't shoot often if at all. As well as low power rounds.
LavaAxe
There are police agencies still doing firing squad executions? Like outside of shooting black people in the back.
grenzdebil
Yeah, because you chose people for a firing squad who are not familiar with the weapon. Yeah, right.
divingin
What police agencies carry out executions?

He probably meant 30.03 - but he still doesn't make any sense.
oheina
A blank and a live round really don't feel THAT different. I'm a professional shooter and I can hardly tell the difference sometimes.
grenzdebil
"Professional shooter"? And you're telling THIS story? That MAY be true with a .22 but even that sounds dubious.
13Alpha
In an M-4 it is EASY to tell the difference (besides the blank adapter). Recoil and sound are totally different. Also w revolver it's easy.
cortexian
I shoot, conservatively, 5,000 rounds a year for work. A blank feels completely different to me... A sponsored IPSC shooter I know can tell.
ThatIrishLass
It's more noticeable in older weapons in my experience. Since most pre-rimfire weapons fired massive .50-cal-plus, it's a bigger difference.
ThatIrishLass
Newton's Third Law. the powder to propel the round creates less recoil than the round itself.
grenzdebil
Errr ... think about that again.
ThatIrishLass
Don't need to, I was right the first time. Might be you misunderstood.
BradleyNorby
Not if someone else loaded the rifle
Strostkovy
They are talking about recoil here. The rounds themselves look obviously different too, though.
randomthoughtsaccount
....If you've shot enough live rounds you know damn well how different a blank feels and sounds like
BradleyNorby
I've shot plenty of rounds been in the Marines live and otherwise
grenzdebil
Apparently not enough, otherwise you'd simply know.
randomthoughtsaccount
I was in too and I can easily tell the difference between a blank or a live round.
LucasTheArchaneer
However it's the conscious shot whether or not you have the blank or feel the blank your mind has some reason to believe you shot a blank1/2
grenzdebil
Actually the difference is more than just notable. You'd have to be pretty clueless to fall for that.
LucasTheArchaneer
So if your brain does not wish to feel responsible it might skew the data to your favor 2/2
randomthoughtsaccount
The chance of that working on someone who is rational seems pretty low. I'm not doubting what you wrote is true, just feels like it 1/2
OneCraftyHooker
The death threat to the president one is true, my friend emailed one from our High School and the secret service definitely found him.
OneCraftyHooker
They even called years later when Bush was going to throw the first pitch at Miller Stadium and told him he couldn't be near there.
SecretlyThreeDucksInAManSuit
Bet the secret service has their hands full with the current one.
