Heres a peak at the final product! Read below to find out how a reel of plastic gets turned into the Midnight Coup.
Build starts with collecting reference material. This is the Leviathan weapon concept art by Bungie artist Patrick Bloom
Images of the high rez model (Black&Gold) by Bungie artist Matt Lichy, ingame model is shown in the top left. On top of these references, ingame screenshots of the gun from different angles is used.
Low poly model is used and edits begin to add in function and details like ingame.
I like to print miniature versions at around 50% scale to plan the build out, get an idea of fitting and identify any areas of weakness.
For this particular build the entire weight of the front portion of the handcannon would be supported at two very narrow points. Which would have been hard to glue together and break apart easily.
Similar thing happened a few times on my better devils build which has a even thicker body and so I wanted to add structural integrity for this next build.
Designed in room for two threaded rods, through the base of the gun which would sustain the weight of the front portion.
Cylinder crane rotates around the shorter of two rods. Cylinder rotates on the crane with the help of a ball bearing.
Hammer redesigned for pivot, which is spring powered.
Assembly process for the hammer complex
Marble used is about 12mm. Which is a bit bigger than ingame, but the best I could find in transparent style.
Heres a shot of the cylinder and crane in action!
On with the printing! Printed at about 85% scale to ingame model. Putting it at around 52cm. Its quite a large gun, might even be the biggest handcannon in destiny.
Parts are printed in grey or silver PLA on Creality Cr10s printer.
Painted all the gold parts with a Rustoleum Gold spraypaint, love how it looks. The print is standing up pretty well to in game models of the gun.
It came out as a very big gun, but i'm very happy with the scale compared to ingame scaling.
The coup is taken apart again for a good sand down and finishing... The most painful part of any build is the sanding.
Curved parts like these printed low poly. Bondo, filler primer and rough sanding is used to get rid of the geometric appearance and add the curves that are needed.
Sanding and filling just the grip took a total of 3-4 days intermittently. The payoff was worth it though!!
Black bottom portion and grip sanded and pained :3. Its finally coming together!
Reload still works after paint, thank god!
White portions sanded and painted. Mmmm creamy. Lots of sand paper harmed during the production of this replica. Next target are the gold pieces.
On the right are the settings I used to print the rest of the gun (0.2 mm layer height.) The one on the left is how I printed the gold parts: 0.04 mm height. Really amazing what FDM can do with some fine tuning! Couldn't have imagined having to sand the right sided version.
ALL GOLD PORTIONS SANDED AND FINISHED HALLALUJA. By far the most tedious part, all of the details are in the gold pieces and the gold spraypaint is so fidgity to work with.
The stand is redesigned in Fusion 360 for a more "Eater of worlds" theme fitting of the Leviathan handcannon.
Cleaned up the inside of the barrel by printing another smaller piece, painting it and attaching to the inside.
For the pattern I used Fusion 360 to design a negative. I had initially planned on printing it in a thin layer on flexible filament to use as a 3D printed stencil. However, there are some very sharp angles and turns that masking tape would just be better fitted for. So I ended up using this model as a guide for cutting out the stencil on masking tape.
Pretty satisfied with the results of the stenciling so far! Key is to use a thin masking paper, thin layer of spray paint and really make sure the edges of the masking tape are stuck on good.
Rip the masking tape off and BAM. Here we are! Shes done!
Youve made it through the post!! Thanks for reading. :D

And still somehow one of the best hand cannons.
MostlyDinosaurs
Damn dude
RHFiesling
very solid work. Well done. What did you model the gun in? Fusion360?
GenuinelyCurious
Beautiful work, dude, those both look just fantastic.
TropicYetti
Incredible work man! I can hear this thing shooting in my head.

MERGATROYDER
This would look great in my game room.

dagogilit350
yo, can you put the files up so other people can print it. I would love to make one.
Sebastopol
while yours says REPLICA and mine says .50 AE..
ssjalhazred
Imagining Calus saying it instead of the dude in Snatch is amusing me.

any plans for Not Forgotten?

Any chance you'll be sharing any of your STLs @op? Your builds are incredible, and I'd love to try my hand at one of them someday.
ShoopMcCloop
I audibly gasped, very nice work
YouExpectedAUsernameButItWasMeDio
This looks better than the in-game model.
Goose5280
As a member of the team that helped build Leviathan, I say bravo!!
ssjalhazred
Ah hah, finally someone to blame- I mean, good job!
Tennex
Thanks so much dude. The Destiny art team is best thing inthe world! Nothing matches my feeling of aw from when I first flew on to the Levi.
Goose5280
I'll let the guys know. My coworker about lost his mind on that fillagree haha!

That is incredible. Your instagram is wonderful too.

An amazing build
ssjalhazred
1 For anyone wondering, the hammer is so intricately bizarre because it's a depiction of the Leviathan's maw eating a planet. The Leviathan
ssjalhazred
2 itself is, in-universe, modeled after a giant worm thing native to the Cabal homeworld that's large enough to eat towns. There is
ssjalhazred
4 somewhere; usually it's the dot sight.
ssjalhazred
3 iconography all over the ship's interior depicting the actual worm, and the guns all have the simpler "triangle eating a circle" symbol
Tennex
Wow never noticed about the hammer is the slug eating a planet. Thanks!!
viludium
That is so amazing. I would love to make polaris lance and suros regime or my d1 favs, tlaloc and bad juju.

Cool make! I have problems with the original designer though the person clearly did not know how guns worked
ssjalhazred
1 Destiny pretty firmly occupies a sub-genre of sci-fi that is unconcerned with realism or explaining how things work, just that it does.
ssjalhazred
2 For the tech the people in the setting use, it gives the artists more leeway when they design things.
ssjalhazred
4 LMGs are absolute nonsense. One of the handcanons fires tiny suns that explode in impact. And if you REALLY want to kick it up a notch,
ssjalhazred
3 The Midnite Coup is also on the low end of the ridiculous spectrum. All the handcanons are comically oversized, many of the rifles and
ssjalhazred
5 check out the arsenal in Warframe, the setting of which is much farther removed from reality and has guns that aren't remotely sane.
bpjarMemePoster
The hammer is at the top of the gun normal same with the cylinder, how ever the barrel is located at the bottom. if Gun fires it blows up.
ZachTheWombat
Still the best primary in the game.
removekarling
threat level
chiIIerr
Someone must not have Kindled Orchid
ZachTheWombat
That's not a primary.
CptBronson
Fine, Threat Level is the best primary then if you're going to go by slot and not weapon type.
JagerSergal
Nice! I would love to have one in game...if I could raid!
JustHappy365
You cant raid?
SatansLady
Dude same. I’m not a raider.
Trexel
Use lfg. It's not bad
SatansLady
Oh I have plenty of offers to carry me, raids just don’t appeal to me that much.
ssjalhazred
1 The subreddit's discord is a good place to find a group that's willing to teach a newbie. Last Wish is also way, WAY less aggravating
ssjalhazred
2 than the Leviathan; bosses have simpler mechanics barring Riven, but she can be cheesed to skip dealing with her eyeball symbol nonsense.
JustHappy365
What platform?
SatansLady
XB1
JustHappy365
Oh man ps4
JagerSergal
I would raid and have used LFGs before but I don’t have very good results with it.
iwant2fork
I will glady buy several from you.
Ardmhor
Is it just me or does that gun look like something the white power ranger would use?
n01looking
Same. Dead serious.
Phexkalessin
you only need one tho, its a fixed roll cause its a y1 weapon :p
educatedfool25
came here to say this
Dehaka
Y1 obsolescence is the most retarded thing they could come up with and the reason I quit.
cr777
if thats the reason you quit it could as well be anything. although i dislike it too it doesnt influence the gameplay that much at all.
Dehaka
Not the only reason, but the first and foremost. Don't like getting shown the middle-finger by developers for liking their game.
OddDreamz
For those wanting to buy one, he will need explicit permission from Bungie to sell this prop as the asset doesn’t belong to him :)
Damiv
You’d be amazed what you can get online.
iwant2fork
Or he could give instructions on how to
fizbandantalus
People post these stl files on thingiverse. Or he can sell the files for the 3d object for people to make.
severice
I've done 3d print projects like this, just the plastic parts? 150 bucks, sanded/bondo/assembled 1000, with detailed paint? 1500
Sparrowdotnet
1500 being the total, damn... And here I was thinking I might be able to afford this... Time to save for a printer.
fizbandantalus
No way this is 1500. This could be printed by buying a ender 3 for 200 and 40 dollars of filament. Rest is paint and sand paper. A can 1/2
fizbandantalus
2/2 primer and filler is 7 dollars. I've made and casted master swords and other things and never comes close to this denomination.
severice
That piece probably represents 70+ hours of time not including print time. Sanding and smoothing takes a while to make it look nice and hold
