Looks like you need to cut both the tailpiece(chrome pipe) AND the stubout(black pipe coming out of wall) in order to fit a p-trap correctly

And for the record, that's the first time I've seen twine holding a drain together. And I've seen some weird shit in my day.

You will need to cut the tail piece( chrome pipe). Your best bet is to take these pics to ace hardware or truvalue .

They will show you pieces you need. It may include a flexible attachment to your tail pipe ,looks like an accordion.
