For a game night they had a TV, hot dogs, candy and soda. Tragic.

Parents have a way of skirting the issues of wealth in a Capitalist environment. I never knew I was poor, all I knew was life.

You were richer than you realized.

Remember absolutely loving pancake dinner, and "goulash" ( just macaroni, tomato sauce and whatever was on sale). Was all we could afford

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kids don't need money (obv within reason) kids need time, effort and positive reinforcement. My parents were not very rich but gave us them.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This made me tear up. I wish to be as good a parent as theirs.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kids don’t care much if you speed 10$ Or 1000$. As long as you spend time with them.

Good parenting

I hope whoever wrote this saved the ticket stub, and some of the cash

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

well that's some wholesome ass shit :D

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I took my son to a Single A game. Parking was free, tickets were cheap, bought him a soda and popcorn. He had a blast.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It isn't necessary to spend to have fun. Kudos to this guy's parents.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I *wouldn't have known either*, expect the kids at high school explained it to me.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

That sounds better than the real baseball game I went to

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't realize how poor we were until I found out that when the teacher gave me my free lunch tickets, it was because we were poor

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was only for 2 years in elementary school - hand me down clothes, used presents, food boxes from church were all "normal", not "poor".

Great parents!

Raising hope

Wonderful parents, beautiful memory

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That right there is proof your parents fucking cared. Go call them and tell them they rock.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They will be excellent grandparents as well. Lucky you.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OMG, my mom did this for us on movie nights. We were dirt-ass poor and aside from a class field trip, I didn't get to go to my first movie /

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

til high school. But when we could afford to, we'd rent a movie (few times a year, usually) and make a Very Big Deal out of it like this, /

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

with homemade tickets and popcorn and the living room rearranged and all. That was SO much fun when we were little.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That is amazingly awesome

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just one more reason to hate capitalism.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I grew up poor. My parents didn't interact unless it was through a beating. I ran away at 10 and never went back.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oof

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Im sorry you had to go through that.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Growing up poor really teaches the value of family.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My mom did similar stuff. When she told me how poor we were after moving to Arizona, I didn't believe her at first. I was adopted as a (1/?)

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

baby, and my mom told me when I was 15 and said I could find out who my mom was. I told her, "YOU'RE my mom." And that was it.

Bonus points if the hotdog buns were just white bread folded around.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Google "what is fairy bread"

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With a box of generic Mac and cheese… truly a gourmet meal

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

microwaved hot dogs wrapped in a slice of bread with a piece of American cheese. That's how we did it back then :D

I'm one of these parents. The hardest parts is trying to keep up with gaming systems.pre pandemic you could buy them online used a month or

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Two after release(or christmas) for cheap, plus haggling. But now because everyone is home they sell immediately for basically retail and I

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can't compete because there's so many people at home the listings are gone in minutes.I just want them to have the same gaming opportunities

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did.

Somehow reminds me of the marmot that yells Alan!

Good ole Lackey gif. Always delivers

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Growing up with little to nothing myself we often did similar stuff. Not a bad way to grow up really.

4 years ago | Likes 269 Dislikes 1

Same, same.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IMO growing up loved is better than growing up rich, although both would be good haha. But not having everything does to a degree...

4 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 0

... make you appreciate what you do have.

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I grew up poor as well. My horse saddle for polo was gold while the other kids had platinum saddles. I still feel the shame to this day.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Such bullshit,right?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was basically child abuse

I learned as an adult that my dad had been ashamed that he couldn't take us on vacations to other countries. I had just assumed (1/2)

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

That taking the rowboat out to the island in the lake and camping there for a weekend was what vacations were about, and looked forward(2/3)

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

To it every year. Hell, I used to brag about it to my friends.(3/3)

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

And that's what it's all about.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a kid who went to other places, it's not really that great because kids can't really get the importance of history and such so get bored.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To many, that is a great vacation. I kinda want to do that.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it was pretty great. I just wish my dad hadn't felt so bad about it. He grew up in a family where spending money was how you (1/2)

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Showed love, and that kinda left a mark, I guess.(2/2)

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is tragically beautiful.

4 years ago | Likes 719 Dislikes 6

It is beautiful. I don't see how it's tragic. If the child, now adult is happy, that is all there is to life.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In the West we're so fixated on money that we sometimes forget that fun can be free.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This sounds like more fun than actually going to a baseball game.

4 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Not tragic at all, just a handcrafted memory of love.

4 years ago | Likes 132 Dislikes 5

As a baseball fanatic and someone that went to several games growing up, yes, it's tragic that they were unable to experience it in person.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

It’s lovely but sad that bright, creative parents who made such an effort for their kids couldn’t afford to take them to a game.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Agreed. I also grew up poor, and I think people forget how little money means to kids. This was probably more fun than the actual game

4 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

I have tons of cherished memories with my dad where we were just picking, cutting firewood, or picking up a truckload of manure.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I also choose this guy's dad. My dad is a perfectly nice guy and still around, but still...

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's not tragic. It's a family that loves & cares for their kids. I knew kids much better off financially who had far more tragic childhoods

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

But the fact the kids have to grow up in poverty to begin with is a tragedy

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Not being to go to a baseball game != poverty. MLB games are expensive AF, especially for a whole family. Lots of families can't afford it.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

The whole point is back in the day a single parent working one single job can make enough money to afford to take the kids to a game

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

But parents working multiple jobs can’t even afford the basics and can’t even think about simple luxuries. The American dream.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It does not say MLB. It says A game. And considering its a national pastime shouldn't it be within reach of an average family to attend 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

maybe ONE game a year? Now I cannot prove this family is truly poor but this shouldn't be a fantasy to go see. 2/2
