Dog hanging on during Houston flooding.

She was rescued!

looks like she's just chillin'

It is truly scary to think of both ways....owner left pet or pet ran off. At least we know this ruffy is safe. God bless. Pray for the rest.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Started to cry then saw she was rescued. Ugh my heart hurts for animals in situations like this :(

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

My boyfriend is well aware that the cats get saved first... He has opposable thumbs hell manage

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Luckily it died down tonight; also in Houston. Keep safe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hope the kitties get rescued too and the livestock. Fucking pieces of shit people need to left behind.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Attach chihuahua to drone, fly doggo to safe.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She looks well taken care of so I hope the family is ok.

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 2

They may have been at work/school and not allowed back in to get her when things got bad.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pets are family. Always rescue your pets!!!! It's not fair to the pets to leave them behind.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Seeing a pet helpless like this hurts my heart. Physically hurts my heart.

Or animals can escape in natural disasters

This is great but all I'm reading is fuck the humans. I'm on the East side of Houston and so far I've had it easy. Maybe I'm defensive.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

"MY pet now" - this guy, probably

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So let's take a picture of it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All the strays in the city will be caught up too.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Everyone in the comments is acting like people choose to leave the pets behind. Have you considered they had no choice?

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 9

When the fuck is that not a choice when you know a giant natural disaster is coming a WEEK IN ADVANCE?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

If memory serves, evacuation authorities are now required to allow people to bring their pets with them.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

they had a choice not to tie or chain them up so they didn't even have a chance!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

+1 only for the "she was rescued"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

sorry pet lovers, but kids and wife first..

8 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 14

So they couldn't getvthr dog or do just not care enough to know the facts?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

This is why the term "dog mom" bothers me a bit. 'Cause when it comes down to it, kids come first. Still, I probs wouldn't leave my dog.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Sorry people lovers, family first. Wait, animals are family so, yep.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Amen

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Can you imagine how scared that poor dog is? So glad she got rescued.

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

I anticipate the Houston SPCA is going to be a cluster fuck after this storm (along with any other rescue shelter). Godspeed to them all.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

As much as I hate the idea of leaving pets behind, there's a few things to remember: animals PANIC, and can 1/

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

serious injury to victims AND rescue personnel in the process. And a lot of these animals may simply be lost because of panic, too. 2/

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Their owners may have been trying to evacuate them and the pets panicked and ran off, or attacked the rescue personnel. 3/

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

There's only so much you can do, and sometimes you're forced to leave them behind no matter how hard you try. 4/

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I know this is BS. But I also feel rather all resources should be focused on PEOPLE aid..then companions..

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

Plan. Ahead.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There was a study done as to why people dont evacuate when told its Mandatory. One of the top reasons is they dont want to leave their pets.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Many shelters cant accept pets, many people dont have ways to transport pets, especially those who are poor.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

"can't"... won't

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Well yes. when you have tons of people, some who could have bad allergies to animals they often say no. It sucks

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

All the animals on one side, anyone with allergies on the other, it's not exactly rocket science

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Fuck you this made water leak from my eyes a little

8 years ago | Likes 217 Dislikes 12

That's the last thing Huston needs right now.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

are you taking the onion cutting factory tour too?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

You're just adding to the problem

Most people shelters will only take animals that are crated. They probably aren't taking in a thousand stray dogs and cats :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in Houston, Galveston, Corpus, and Port Aransas sent their animals to DFW ahead of the storm. Many will be ready for adoption beginning Tues

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Natural disasters create many victims. Let's be reals, the doggies come second when shit goes down. Save your family and THEN the pets.

8 years ago | Likes 144 Dislikes 52

dumb ass how many days in advance did people know the storm was coming? Only a human could make a BS excuse for being a human

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fuck that. No excuse at all to leave them. It's not about who's first.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

I wholehartedly disagree. If they won't take my dog, then I'm not going either. Simple as that. If you abandon your pets, you're terrible.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 12

if you are being rescued by helicopter agree but if you have the chance to pack and flee in your car leavening your pets behind youre an ass

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lets be "real" here. We are not you. And the dog in this family going to be more cooperative. Ignorance is bliss, so less reason to panic.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Humans come first, then pets. Don't put your family at risk for an animal, no matter how much you love them.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck that there is almost literally no scenario where you can't also take your dog in a hurricane.

That's great. I had no idea

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

is there absolutely no room for a dog in a shelter? If there's room for kids, there's room for a dog.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 7

why am I getting downvoted? Is there no room for animals?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

People who hold shitty opinions that they can't justify, often resort to silent downvotes

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Helicopter during flooding in the aftermath.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Then they didn't evacuate when they were told and were stupid. Meaning the helicopter should just rescue the dog.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 7

"WHY R U STEALING MY DOOOOGG?" "WE AREN'T MA'AM, HE'S BEING RESCUED. BRUNO'S COMING WITH US. YOU ARE ALL IDIOTS, BYE."

You better believe I'm going to have some hulk strength and one arm that shit.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Yeah, I upvoted since I agree, but the helicopter crew not allowing a dog on board (due to other families, perhaps) could be a common scene.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

I would never ever forgive myself if I left my dog behind.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

who leaves the dog behind? they're the first in the car in an emergency followed by the rest of the family.

8 years ago | Likes 244 Dislikes 37

I dunno about you but I'm more concerned saving my actual family than a damn mutt.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

Well of course their first. Who do you think is gonna drive?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

For Christ's sake even George Lutz went back into tThe Amityville Horror house to save 'Harry' the dog

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Animals often panic, and either run off or attack rescue personnel (and even their own families). Only so much you can do sometimes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you have to take your family to an emergency shelter, which doesn't take pets? :(

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If the state wants federal money after the disaster then all state shelters will take pets. They passed a law for it after Katrina.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I learned about that just from another comment. That's very sensible.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're assuming they left their dog behind.. not lost it, it ran away in all the crazy. Or that the owner is dead or in trouble.

8 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 7

This. First thing I assumed. I guess I still hope for the best from this world

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

in 2008 when the financial collapse hit and many houses were forclosed. hundreds of thousands of people left oregon overnight and for...

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

years after it became standard to find dead pets that were just left in the house when the family left (i know a lot of carpet cleaning)...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

people), also more visible to the public was a crisis of thousands of horses left in the same fashion, locked in a field to die. Huge...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Humanitarian effort to save what horses that could be saved and rehabilitate the extremely malnurished. People are fucking monsters.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

so to answer your question of who leaves the animal behind? turns out most everyone. all it takes is the wrong circumstances.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You don't have kids I'm guessing. I mean I love my dogs I'd never leave them behind, but my kids are the first in the car...

I have kids and my dogs still get in the car first

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 6

my son is 14... if shit hits the fan hes helping load the car. the dogs just happy the car door is open and waiting for the ride to start.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Kids can fend for them selves. I protect my dog with my kids life.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 7

I mean, kids can usually figure out that it's car time. Dogs not so much

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

If only they could drive that crib faster.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Vroom vroom... vvvroooOOOOMMmmmm

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Govt shelters and rescuers won't allow you to take pets. I guess is their protocol is shitty but is what they gotta do.

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 7

It's why some people won't leave. They won't abandon their pets.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Im sure plenty of people passed as a result of this during Katrina

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everybody must take that decision. I'm guessing you ain't from here but water is rising. Staying could mean death.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I didn't say it was the right decision, I said that's why some people do it. Sorry for any confusion.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I'd rather stay than leave my dog. Fuck that shit, if we die; we die

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

States are now required to provide rescue/shelter options for animals. Learned from Katrina disaster

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh OK well I got this from our local news and rescuers weren't taking pets.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Called the PETS act, still new and kinda depends on level of disaster. Not every human shelter has to take pets but the state has to a plan1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For what to do with animals if declaring state emergency and wanting gov funds 2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who said the dog got left behind?

8 years ago | Likes 253 Dislikes 9

Because during these floods/major hurricanes it is very common to leave your pets behind. Shelters won't take them and families have to run.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Most shelters accept pets now.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Indeed. Lots of animals get lost in the commotion of emergencies or even evacuating.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I hate when people are quick to judge. Dogs run off in emergencies.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 4

1.) I was thinking the dog could have ran off scared when the hurricane hit and the owners could be mourning his loss. Sucks that humans..

8 years ago | Likes 153 Dislikes 5

2.) are so terrible that we do instantly assume someone left their dog.

8 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 2

That's right, we don't know what happend. The dog was rescued by good people, that's a fact.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Don't you start with your bullshit common sense. We have conclusions to jump to! There are lynchings to be held without any evidence here!

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

During evacuations FEMA and other organizations tell you to leave pets behind/outside so "they can be safe"

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 7

I don't even understand this reasoning. Responsible, loving pet owners treat them as family. Why would you leave family in the back yard?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

At least don't leave them on Leash to drown

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Fuck FEMA

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

lol why? It's an organization that helps during times like these. I suppose we can argue about specific policies / actions, but this...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah fuck those people who respond to catastrophic emergencies and prioritize human life over pets. Worst people ever right?

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 10

I upvoted you. I swear. Imgur never has common sense or just lives off pure emotions.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Let's hear the very important life or death reason why pets can not also be saved along with the owners under any circumstances...

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fuck people who make people choose between saving themselves and saving their family. It's not like some camp "doesn't have room" for pets.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

No but boats are small and a lot of kids cant swim well. Im sorry but the neighbors child is more important than my dog or yours.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Fuck you if you do this. Pets aren't property, they're family.

8 years ago | Likes 1801 Dislikes 107

No they're definitely property.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 24

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

In the end, they're animals. If youre prioritizing the life of pets over other humans, there's something wrong with you.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 25

Except today you don't need to prioritize anything. Pets are allowed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you literally have no idea what the circumstances were that lead to this situation.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree, however we dont know what happened here. For instance if it comes down to chase dog or get kid to safety, that dogs getting left

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pets are pets.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 14

Who the hell 56 people downvoted this??? What is there to argue??

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You have no idea what could have lead to this situation. That dog could have run off in fear of all of the noises of the storm an others.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hopefully the owner can be located and is banned from owning pets in the future.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 49

Fake news

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 14

Actual human family comes before pets, bub. If you're seriously putting a child and a dog on the same level, you've got some mental issues.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 31

Nothing suggested they were putting those on the same level. Your cousins are family too, that doesn't mean you'd save them before your kids

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Yes, they are. Half the commenters here insist that 'people can take care of themselves, so I save pets first'. They're lunatics.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

They're probably joking if anything

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

....right. The multiple posts with hundreds of upvotes about how dogs are as important as people are jokes. And I'm being downvoted. Sure.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

They're just animals, but how we treat them reflects on who we are as people.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 9

Yes. And it's not just leaving them behind but I have seen several stories of them being tied or chained so they can't even try to escape.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your folks should have left you

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 18

They're dead so technically they did

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 5

Plenty of shelters won't let families bring pets with them, so they leave and hope for the best. It's one of few shitty options

8 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 7

Its also why large numbers of people won't leave in an evacuation.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'd just hope that if your in an area that's prone to hurricanes, plse develop a safety plan for your fam/pets, in case an emergency occurs

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know most of us live check to check, &its not always easily done, but discuss options, talk w fam/friends, may be surprisingly welcoming .

Only on the internet can you find so many people disagreeing with something I'd find to be common sense...

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

Yes, exactly: the comment was EXPRESSLY MEANT FOR people who deliberately leave pets behind. How COULD it apply to dead or KO'd pet owners?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There are countless ways to lose touch of people/children/pets during a natural disaster.

8 years ago | Likes 331 Dislikes 5

Leaving them there to fend for themselves shouldn't be one of those ways.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 52

Again, you're assuming the pet was "left there."

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Hell, I drive an hour to work, but it would only take 45 minutes for a particular type of disaster to hit my house. My pets would be doomed.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is true, we shouldn't be so quick to judge

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Especially when animals panic and try to flee. You can't always catch them in time. :(

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

This is very true. My cat would bolt in a heartbeat. :(

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Perhaps, but considering how often people leave pets just when they're moving, it's not a wild assumption

8 years ago | Likes 86 Dislikes 25

Pets often panic during moves and end up just plain lost. That's why I made sure to board my cats while I moved.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But still, it is an assumption.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Thanks for this people like to assume the worst of people from just a pic for example

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That dog looks well fed. Nothing there suggests neglect. Dog could've run off to get help for owner even. You don't fucking know.

8 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 15

Ur right

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

My dog, god rest her soul, was fantastic; but she sure was dumb. I can only imagine in this situation that she'd be out the door and away.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

"dog could've run off to get help for owner..." timeout. The chance of the dog was abandoned was 1000x higher than it ran off to get help.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

looking well fed most likely means it was abandoned recently. "nothing there suggests neglect?" Look at it hanging on the ramp.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Neither do you.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 27

No. But I'm not getting my shit in a twist making assumptions either. I'm just glad the dog is saved.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

Govt shelters and rescuers won't allow you to take pets. I guess is their protocol is shitty but is what they gotta do.

8 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 9

They didn't take them before, but thankfully that has been changing after Katrina.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck the government. I'm taking my pets or I'm dying with them

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'd rather die than leave a pet behind. fuck anyone who thinks otherwise

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They didn't before Katrina. President Bush changed the policy because many people wouldn't evacuate or lost their pets.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

They do allow pets.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It depends on who's rescuing you. I've been watching news 24/7. And some rescuers ain't taking dogs. Some shelters do allow them, some don't

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

After Katrina they started adding pet shelters next to the people ones - too many people refused to evac w/o the whole family.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They are taking pets...all over the news stressing that!

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

Yes but they need to be in a crate/cage

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Not always.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is more of 50/50. One shelter was separating pets from their owners at the entrance. Do what you must to survive is bad in some areas.

My girlfriend took in a family that had pets. When boats came to rescue them, they were told no pets could come on the boats. No one left.

My wife's half sister mom was rescued and dumped in a gas station she's in a wheelchair and we couldn't get to her. Chaos is crazy.

Is chaos right now and yes some rescue groups just don't have the time and manpower to deal with pets. Is the sad reality. Is mad chaos.

Also some families got too many dogs. Is just a logistic issue, would you save a baby or a dog? These rescuers have to make these decisions.
