Hey, a Shay. Gear drive trains. So rather than big back and forth pistons pushing wheels, they run a crank and driveshaft to the wheels

9 years ago | Likes 218 Dislikes 0

I knew there was something different about that engine. Thanks for pointing it out.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The shay originated about 15 miles from my house!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's really cool and different :)

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey I learned something!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Whooaaa!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Neeeeeeeeerd! jk thats pretty cool ????

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shays are pretty, used extensively for logging and steep grades not really for hauling freight over great distances..that was more for 1/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Big Boys going over the Sierras and Rockys

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks. Never saw that drive system before. North American?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Correct. Primarily used for logging IIRC

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am losing the plot. I misread this comment as "used for logging IRC" and wondered what steam engines had to do with Internet Relay Chat!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, this is a Shay locomotive.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thought Shays were Australian

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were built in Lima, OH: http://limalocomotiveworks.com/shay_locos.html

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but - do they choo choo??

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Their whistles have a very distinct scream. The NCTM has one and you can definitely tell when they have it under power.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YORaPeF2J4g they do in Taiwan Mt.ali

Gotta love a 3-chime!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More torque, or just an alternate design?

9 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

This design is better suited to railroads in steep mountain operations like logging

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

#1 reason is AWD for traction on rough tracks, such as those hastily laid in rough terrain for logging. All steamers have incredible torque.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Steam engines that size usually have 2 pistons, that fucker's got 3 which all power a common driveshaft for MAXIMUM TORQUE.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Yes, more torque and all the wheels are driven, including the tender, which gives better traction than conventional steam.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Having a separate driveshaft aslo allowed them to have a different gear ratio. In conventional steam trains 1 piston stroke = one revolution

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

How do you guys know so much about trains?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wikipedia

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think, because each set of wheels can swivel, it can do much tighter turns. inventor used them for logging.

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 0

They actually have a horrible turning radius. Had to use switchbacks. Sauce: rode behind one as a kid, asked a lot of questions.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I do believe there was a bit more torque out of the design, however it wasnt really enough to make up for the complexity.
