Nail furring strips to wall 1x2 Or 2x2 Add insulation if you want to get fancy - nail drywall to furring. Done.

1x2 would be best. 2x2 would take a good chunk of the room away once everything's finished. 1/2" strips of ripped 2x would work as well.

First get it asbestos tested, then if clear, baton it all out with 2x1 and board over
