"You're going to have to speak louder/enunciate/slow down for me to understand you." -Me, many times. I ain't got time for that crap.

I say pardon twice, then I always, ALWAYS make the mistake of apologizing and saying "one more time please" After that theres nowhere to go.

Every time I ask someone to speak up, they either speak at the same level or get quieter.

As I've gotten older I find myself saying "Sorry, I have no fucking idea what you're saying." far more often than ever before.

I know people who say what to anything, so I say que.

Sometimes I just do a little laugh and then it turns out to be a question, so they're just standing there waiting for an answer.
porrages
I've done that too. Sometimes I remember the incident when i'm trying to fall asleep. Makes me cringe harder than anything.
Audiobooks and podcasts help me not to think when I try to sleep.

"I can't hear you." "I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" "Explain." "Could you elaborate?"

I quit trying to be nice. I just tell them I do not understand right up front.

I give up after the second time. Smile and wave, boys, smile and wave...

When this happens on the phone, I tell them I can barely hear them, wait a moment to simulate going to a better area and then ask them to 1/
repeat everything they just said. 2/2

I have difficulty with certain accents. If I had a top 10 list of phrases most commonly said at work "I'm sorry. What?" would be #2.
DailyBullshit
What is the #1 then? "Next order, please?"
No its "Dammit". Last time I worked in food service was in college in the 90s

I love how Scottish people sound, but that can be one of the most difficult accents to understand.
I don't run into that one very often. Usually its South American, Middle Eastern, and Eastern Europe (most difficult one).
Rapiecage
Scottish is worse than any of those to me. Eastern European is easy by now, but scots are always a nightmare
Last Scott we had I had no problem understanding him. Everyone else did tho. He was funny.
You really work with a variety of accents! What kind of work is it if you don't mind me asking?
I work at a CDL school. We get people from everywhere.
south american is the ugliest, but not that bad to understand
