Good to see that kid from Radio Flyer is still doing his thing.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

He's 102, maybe he just figures, what the hell?

My dad is a retired Boeing engineer. I should suggest this to him as a retirement hobby.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Impressive, but isn't that Ken Wallis, who died at 97 in 2013 and never worked for Boeing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Wallis

I believe it was ie as apposed to Y, but thank you for posting it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

can't really say why, but this is so cool ?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was thinking the same!! He's still building, still flying. His education never left him, nor his strong will for adventure & achievement.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why? Probably because everything about it.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I know a guy who built one these out of a go-kart and a VW motor. He'd take off from a runway used for RC planes.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Richard Hammond did similar thing in Great Escapist. Nice show.

"I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in
Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These things usually come in kits.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not a plane.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Except, it kinda is

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How do they prevent the fuselage from rotating without a rear rotor or a second pair of rotors going the opposite way?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I know those are words but in that order I have no idea what they mean.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The main rotor is driven by the forward motion, not the engine, so there's no torque to react.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

air flow over the tail

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

The top rotor is not powered and spins freely due to the air being pushed through it by forward thrust from the rear facing props.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Awesome, thanks!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"plane"

5 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 1

People who fly these insist that they be called "gyroPLANES" because the rotating part is a wing, and isn't powered.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

What if you have long hair, a scarf or a cape?

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Isadora Duncan went out like that.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...well...then you...don’t have them

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

then you shortly WOULDN'T

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ded

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The guy is 102, I’m sure he’s included the most modern safety features from *checks notes* 1952.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

No capes, dahling

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Hey, somebody ahould tell @op this is a gyrocopter and not an airplane.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

People who are into these insist that they are called gyroPLANES because the spinning thing at the top is a wing which isn't powered.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If not powered, why is it spinning at beginning of scene 2? Craft isn't moving.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look at the tags - Clever dick

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

How about the fact that the guy in the videos, Ken Wallis, has NOTHING to do with the clickbait title, not-so-clever dick?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

/s (sigh)

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

102 you old has more balls than I do

5 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 1

A lot of people that old will say, "Gotta die of something, right?"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not his most famous autogryo... he built and flew Little Nellie...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's the worst that's going to happen to him? Dude's probably fought in Dubya Dubya Deux, 60s'd his way through the 60s, and survived

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...and a longer bag to carry them in

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

doubt it, thats Ken Wallis was 97 when he died

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When your body starts to fail, you build one out of metal powered by an internal combustion engine

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Old enough not to care if it fails

5 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

Came to say the same thing..

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"WHY CAN'T I DIE!!!!"

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Lol. Poor dude looks like an animated corpse already. Getting old is brutal.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Jesus. I couldn't trust my grandfather to get out of a chair at 92, let alone build and operate a fucking gnomish flying machine at 102

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Most men die before 80 so your grandpa even being alive at 90 is huge

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

At least 2.5 billion heart beats on that old ticker by the time of 80 with another 31m added a year. No oil change even

... You've never taken care of a senior with dementia and osteoporosis. So yeah, I helped him do everything. Or he'd fucking die.

My gran could be trusted to stay in bed, unfortunately her legs couldn't be trusted to get her out of bed...we had to trust a nursing home.

Wait - what? Shouldn’t it just create drag and not lift?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well you're 3 hours ahead of me on this.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Huh, well I'll be.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hehe, powered by passing wind. So, gas powered? Sorry, fart joke here

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

This is Ken Wallis (not boeing engineer and not 102) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Wallis

5 years ago | Likes 383 Dislikes 2

Thanks! What a guy!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also not a plane.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He was a stuntman for the James Bond films tho....

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

he was still 97 when he died which is still impressive

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

BEST COMMENT, THANK YOU

Father of Little Nellie

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

This was good clickbait! It got me and hit me in the inspirational feels. I wonder if i would have even watched otherwise

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you. Not that there aren't Boeing engineers in the UK, but really had my doubts.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

This should be pinned up, are there mods in imgur?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks. The story is amazing without the added BS...

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Thank you for being a good fact checker. The world needs more.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Do people make up stories to fill in missing content? Is this a bot glitch filling in the blanks? Just wondering what drives this happening.

Fb effect. Straight out of a Black Mirror episode

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The lies ad exactly nothing. The dude is 97 and has a plenty interesting background with no need to make shit up.

All the safety of an open-air helicopter and convenience of needing a full runway

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Still safer than the Max8

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

What makes you say that?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dangerous*

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If I recall, the big "propeller" on the top is completely unpowered. It only spins because of the air. Thus it more of a wing than a prop.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Think its powered to get it spinning then once in the air its air speed that keeps it rotating

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correct. Once rotational inertia is attained, air moving through the top rotor provides lift while the rear prop thrusts the craft forward.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then he goes “weeeeeeaaaaaaggghhhh” then he crashes.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They're ludicrous, I love them. It's like something from steampunk, but real. They shouldn't work at all, but they do.

5 years ago | Likes 124 Dislikes 2

You just move this wing over here, and that one over there, before gravity notices the ol' switcheroo.

5 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 0

I see!

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For the kinda person who saw a plane and thought “fixed wings are just too damn safe”

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

This is actualy safer since it wont stall

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Yeah all you have to worry about is the “Jesus bolt” staying intact

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Jesus nut*

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Probably, but his sexual life is never really discussed.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I had no idea what they were. fascinating. for those that want to know: https://youtu.be/mQieKnglzj4

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just an FYI, that video alludes to the massively incorrect Bernoulli model of pressure change which only contributes about 3% lift. Most

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

lift is produced by an airfoil by propelling air downward, not by pressure differentials above and below the wing.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Never seen James Bond?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Rather I just thought they were a mini helicopter, but I didn’t know the physics behind them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, the rotors are unpowered. They spin with the air going over them.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Autogyro PILOTS are. I saw a display once that fitted entirely in an 800yd cube at no speed but had loops, twists, stalls and a touch and go

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Sauce me please!!!!!

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You can find videos of Autogyro displays/shows though to get an idea.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Neat

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sorry, it was live not video! I was too busy watching to record it.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn. I thought it might have been when I reread your comment. That’s really amazing though.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was gobsmacking.
