We never had this in the UK. So the Simpsons Crossover episode is all kinds of weird. I think most of us just assumed they made up an entirely fictional show to have a crossover with, because that's the kind of thing single digit seasons of the Simpsons would do.

I remember that as a kid then i found the Critic on the internet and it was like i struck gold. Consumed the entire series in a week.

While Matt Groening did agree the episode itself is funny, he hated how it felt like he was being forced to prop up a show that couldn't hack it on it's own (To the point of having his name removed in future broadcasts)
