Shipyard was a terrible yet awesome time. Our sub (as seen above) had more holes cut into than I like to admit. Just a note, 35ish feet of this bad boy remains underwater when loaded for kicking ass. She has a crew of about 160 sailors, is just over 500ft. long, 42 feet wide, has 4 forward torpedo tubes and 24 missile silos. Her only limitation on how long she can stay submerged is her food supply.

You guys are nutty. No offense intended, just speaking to reality.

Holes???

Well, you can't just flip up the hood.

Yup, had just over 15 cut into the hull for various projects. Main one, and largest, was for refueling the reactor. Overall time was 3 yrs.

That's typically what dry dock stints are for. They cut a bunch of holes in the ship to access stuff they can't when it's in the water.

Why do the paint the bottom red?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Copper in the paint keeps stuff from growing on it.

TIL thanks.

The worst that could happen in a sub. They didn't stock enough coffee

This is so very true.

My son graduates HS in May then leaves for boot camp at Great Lakes IL.... he’s volunteered for subs. @LadyAyami I hope you are right.

They send them to school for a year - by the time he graduates school they will have them drilled for every situation.

20 years in, 4 diff subs, 16 patrols. My worst memory was running out of toilet paper...

That makes me feel better! Thank you!

24 ICBMs. Each with 8 100kt warheads. Each warhead is GPS enabled and can be independently targeted. 192 cities toasted by one sub.

***slbm***

The W88 warhead has an estimated yield of 475kt.

The cruise missiles have GPS, not the SLBMs. And we don't target cities, but military targets.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I bet the double up the targets though...so only like 100 cities incinerated...stop exaggerating!

Don't forget, this is only one sub. We have 14 more just like this. *math* 2,688 cities gone. Then the machines take over..

Math is off. Not all 24 tubes have missiles anymore. Permanent ballast.

Any idea why the red part is down as low as it is, when the waterline will never be nearly that low even on the surface?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Good question!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s so if the sub rolls over in some sort of catastrophe it can be found. Easier to spot red on the sea floor than black.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe because it is cheaper and the black part is needed as camo from above.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The red is from the "natural" color the anti-corrosive paints comes out in. The bottom half is paint this for surface operations. 1/

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The black paint on the upper half has similar anti-corrosive properties but not as good as the red. However most subs get repainted every2/

Time they pull into port to maintain a corrosion free hull and extend the life of the multi-million dollar sub.
