Dude... You need a license or photo ID to sign up for selective services (men at 17), to buy cigarettes, get a bank or credit card, get a job, cash a paycheck... you can show your ID at a polling place or give all your information and get your mail in. And... you have 4 years between elections to save up 20 dollars for an ID card if you don't want a license.

BWAHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Thats hilarious. As if the Law matters in the current USA.
Insider trading is Illegal, Trump does it constantly, as does his cabinet and his family. Corruption is illegal, Trump does it constantly. Killing citizens is illegal, ICE does it without consequences, ignoring judges is illegal, it's done on a daily basis. Going to war against a country without congress is illegal, kidnapping a foreign president is illegal, bombing schools and killing little kids is illegal.

If you ever supported Trump you’re a fucking idiot.

While I'm against requiring voter ID, some states already require it, but made getting a non-driving ID free. (Wisconsin for example).
Sadly, this isn't the ironclad logic to defeat voter IDs that we hope for.

It's kind of worse, tho. Trump doesn't want to know. He has no interest in reality.

Unfortunately, the 24th amendment only says "tax." If it's not a "tax" then it's not illegal. Legally speaking, fees aren't taxes. Plus, most (all?) states that require IDs provide free IDs to avoid these legal issues, but it's still an extra hurdle with extra costs associated, like taking an extra day off, transportation, getting a copy of your birth certificate, etc.

I completely agree it's unlawful in regard to the spirit of the law, but it's not illegal in regard to the letter of the law.

Plus every time a state passes a voter ID law, they also start closing or cutting staff funding for certain DMV locations...but that's a separate cost saving measure and totally just a coincidence...every fucking time.

I had to look into this claim and it doesn't appear to be as widespread as you indicate, but there are free photo ID available in some states if you meet certain requirements. https://nn4youth.org/a-state-by-state-guide-to-obtaining-id-cards/

How is the felon voting?

22 hours ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Florida does not ban felons from voting if they are not behind bars.

I will never understand why voting in the USA is such an issue and complicated topic while many European countries manage it to reduce it to a mail or a visit a polling office (spread all over, schools and stuff like that) with an ID in your hand.

Easy answer its voter suppression.

American conservatism is anti-democratic and that is why it is an issue.

Because we have to go to a lot of effort to keep the black, brown, poor, and other undesirables from being allowed to vote.

Because voter id favors one party's power.

Confusion is an aid to corruption. It's why our taxes are such a pain too.

Because of bigoted insecure white men. No, seriously, all the silly fuck fuck games we play with voting here are almost exclusively based on race or gender. Specifically trying to supress the vote of people who aren't white men.

Multiple high ranking Republicans, including Trump himself, have stated that if voting was easier (or even not made harder) that Republicans could never win another election.

That's what we've been doing in the US, but the Orange Terd and his MAGAs have been trying to change it, so they can never be voted out of power!

It's not. Like everything else here, it's a purposeful muddying of the waters.

An email to get a postal vote here in the UK. Didn't need id and still got to vote.

Can also proxy vote by nominating someone to vote in person on my behalf; did that a few times when I was away at uni.

Even after getting a postal or proxy vote setup if I don't use it I can still vote in person on the day.

Changed my name and it was no issue.

Could register both at uni and at home during my university years and then choose where to vote on election day as long as I only voted once total.

It's bizarre to me how complicated it seems to be in some places. Even with id requirements now there's ways to vote without any id.

And how postal votes could be lost or delayed. (You can even deliver them in person at the return address or voting station here)

Because making voting easy for all Americans is a threat to some really powerful people here.

Many European countries have the population of single American cities

The problem, in some part, seems to be that ID. There is no federal national ID card, most people just use their driver's license. But what if you don't drive? You'd need a passport. Both of these cost money, which is a 'tax', which is supposedly illegal.

Yes, in Europe we "just vote with our state mandated/issued ID", meaning everyone HAS to have an ID, which also means everyone has to pay an amount between 20-50 euro every 10 years (or whenever you lose it). The cost is peanuts.

It’s not “supposedly” illegal. The 24th Amendment prohibits poll taxes. Requiring an ID you have to pay for is the equivalent of a tax. It’s requiring you spend money in order to vote.

If they gave you the ID for free, you'd pay for it... Through your taxes. I'm gonna be reeeeal honest with you here: I'm basically paying 2,5 euro per year for my ID, but it immediately opens up a LOT of access to government services through very easy means. I understand that it's difficult to set a random number that would be admissible or not, so just saying "NO tax, AT ALL" is easier. Inflation-adjusted poll taxes were 30-90 dollar per year, yes, that would be ridiculous. 2-3 dollar though?

And again, that's not just for voting. It gives you access to financial services, online free tax registration (lol), in Europe's case even easy universal healthcare registration and administration,...

I know the 24th amendment has an important place, and fuck me, it's barely 62 years old! But having federally instituted person IDs, which can amongst other things be used for voting, shouldn't be a 'bad' thing, and SHOULD be up for discussion.

And BTW, fuck the SAVE act, that shit's vile.

Your system sounds good. But US law is as I’ve described it. Having to pay a fee to vote is unconstitutional. IDs issued for free by the government would be fine because they come out of general revenue. But no one is suggesting that, because these laws are about preventing people from voting, as you know.
