As someone who's always been interested in writing and arranging music, thanks! Good guy Numbers McGee.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Theory nerd here. Love this stuff!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can't cheat great music. Get the fuck out of here with this shit.

As a graduate student in music... This chart hurts my soul....

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Where ya studying just finished my PhD? And it's not that bad of a chart! Haha, for beginning.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a musician, this is just the tip of the iceberg. This is all what we consider "diatonic" harmony. The real fun stuff comes later!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I played drums...see note..hit drum..repeat.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a music theory major and have no clue what I will do when I graduate

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That may be the ugliest circle of fifths chart I've ever seen but nonetheless, +1 for good very basic intro to theory info

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

whoever made this has no idea about chord progressions

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

As a high school AP theory student THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hahaha this is Week 1 AP Theory. Doesn't even reach all the way to circle of fifths. If this is significantly helpful...consider dropping.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Some of this isn't accurate. Smells Like Teen Spirit is incorrect for instance.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I was also confused...I don't remember that song having an authentic cadence any where. I'm such a nerd.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Right! There isn't.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Write awesome music in five minutes." Please, I know all this and haven't been able to write awesome music in fifteen years.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@judgemesilently

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you forget to also ask for upvotes? Cause that definitely works.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Sorry, but this is a VERY basic description with a lot of mistakes and a lot of generalisation. Good effort, though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Honestly, it's not a terrible start for someone who isn't super musically inclined. It's a lot of information stuffed into a short post.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awesome as in generic and boring?

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 4

This post also goes into more advanced stuff. You could write some fine unique music with the information in this post

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Step one: learn to play guitar

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Chord progressions, I'll take em

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i'll take am

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is really just the first semester of Music Theory, and honestly like the first half of that semester.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

That's actually reassuring for me. I'm a beginner at music and I'm blown away by the things I learn about it. As long as it's well founded.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

More like a few classes of it. It's also to useful also to experiment with chords: voicings, voice leading, types and progressions etc.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah you spend the first 3 semesters learning the 'rules' and then the 4th semester is all about breaking them. Experimentation is key.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty much. Fascinating stuff. I love classical (for want of a better term) and jazz where it can very interesting theory wise.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a music major... no.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

The extent to which this info was dumbed down and distorted makes me want to scream.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

And if your playing prog just say fuck it and throw a bunch of random keys all over over the place. Don't forget to change timesig each time

#Opeth

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No no no. You only need four chords. I - V - iv - VI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pidokakU4I if you don't believe me

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

OMG

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

just to be correct, it's I-V-vi-IV...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Whups, yeah. Too bad no edit button.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the most common one but any arrangement of them works as long as you start with I. I-vi-IV-V was popular in early rock.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but in his defense, minor 4th to major 6th isn't really great XD

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

you end up getting. Does it sound good? All depends on how well you can write it in. 2/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In major, absolutely. In minor though iv is normally minor and VI is normally major. So if you stick to the formula in minor that's what 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which does steel panther play

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Depends on the song

Your girl \m/ 3:) \m/

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well eatin aint cheatin so its all good

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or you could just write a modern country song with the same 6 chords they all use.

9 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 4

As much as I agree that the vast majority of country music is schlock, people don't realize that it's the same with most other genres.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think 6 is being generous. Ever heard the 4 chord song, by Axis of Awesome?

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

That's literally every triad naturally in a key, except the vii°. More like I, IV, V, and vi.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a music major, 6 is generous. More like 3 or 4.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

give this more traction

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Listen to Texas country. So much better than the crap they shit out in Nashville, it's all pop like and boring. No authenticity

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is a scarecrow. I thought it was a human woman, sorry.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Its a fucking scarecrow again!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Don't forget to include the following in your lyrics: pickup truck, painted on or skintight jeans, beer, corn fields, good old days.

9 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 1

Workin' in the field, big green tractors, iced tea, them country girls, muddin' in a pickup truck, hidin' the fact that you're actually ok.

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Don't forget about ball caps, the good stuff, working 9-5, two lane roads, and old guitars

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

...whiskey, guns, smoking, short shorts, shaking your butt, and the occasional kill your husband...

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

And how could we forget good old "Up, down" and "Crazy, baby" (the latter is a general cliche but whatever)

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

6 lolz. I play 2 shows in downtown Nashville daily. If it ain't Wagon Wheel or something equally brain numbing, then good ducking luck.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a folk singer, the chords aren't the issue. Shallow lyrics are

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Drive By Truckers have plenty of songs that could be considered modern country but they are fuckin amazing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of banjo tunes are one chord but just sick ass fills if you play old time

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the difference between rock and jazz. Rock musician plays 4 chords for 1000s of people. Jazz mus. plays 1000s of chords for 4 people.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In 5 minutes, lol, it took me years to get that chart and I'm not sure I fully understand it.

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Need help? Circle of fifths is actually easy with a halfway decent teacher!

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Circle of fifths is ok, it's the progressions (diff between I and i etc.) that I never really fully understood.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Okay gotcha. All those progressions are is how far away from the tonic/root you go in a scale to play a chord. I'll use C for an example

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To play "iv" you'd do the same thing but instead of F major, play F minor. "ivo" would be diminished and so forth. Once your learn all your

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scales it's the same principal. Keep in mind C is easiest key signature to play since it doesn't have sharps or flats. Start with it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So C has no sharps, no flats. It's easy. So to play "IV", count 4 notes away (F) in the scale and play that major chord since IV is capital

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WE NEED HELP. ALL WE CAN GET. ALSO, HOW TO PLAY JAZZ MUSIC?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Okay, so for jazz. Scales. Can't say it enough. Scales. And for gods sake syncopate.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also practice improv and play around with accidentals a lot. They really are what give jazz its freshness.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just play all the time. You can only learn jazz from practicing lots, preferably with other good jazz musicians.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'll take your offer on help if you're givin' it!

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yeah! Okay, fuck yes. Ive never taught this before but I've been a musician for 14 years. Where are you at right now? Instrument? Questions?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Guitarist for 16 years, but composition has always been a challenge. Everything I've written is based off feeling and what sounds good.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can I get some of that too? Beginner guitarist, and by that I mean screwing around with tabs and don't even know a full song.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

sure! I play piano and drums but guitar isn't any different. practice your C scale and learn its chords by ear. Keep practicing tabs too

NOW COMPLETE WITH COMIC SANS

9 years ago | Likes 282 Dislikes 4

*baaaaaarrrffffffff*

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Actually, all the music teachers I've had were inclined to Comic Sans. So I don't think it's inaccurate..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For that professional look.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dude. My acceptance letter to U Pitt's MSW program was comic sans on letter head.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not only is it in comic sans but most of it isn't true. I'm considering making a post about it because it's pissing me off.

9 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 1

Please do so. I still regret never paying attention during Music Theory..

As someone who just plays guitar as a hobby, this is awesome!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

For more, google "chord progressions". There are SO MANY out there.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well this is just the post that keeps on giving!!!!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So what's the dif between IV and iv?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Uppercase means it's a major chord. Lowercase is a minor chord. So if the chord is "G", IV is G major & iv is G minor.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sweet! Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I play guitar too! Can you explain what's going on in the first bit with Roman numerals and Adam's song?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So the numerals correspond to the chart depending on what key you are playing in.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah that bit is completely wrong

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For those wondering Adam's song is mostly I, IV, VI and Smells Like Teen Spirit is I guess I, IV III, VI. I mean in E it's E, A, G, C.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh and Black Parade just descends so I guess it's I, I7, VI, V, IV, III, II, V? But those are all of the top of my head cuz I know the songs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I always see a bunch of drawing tips here, not enough music tips! As a songwriter, good stuff numbers McGee

9 years ago | Likes 259 Dislikes 5

What do you mean this is good stuff? It's almost completely inaccurate except for some of the stuff with the circle of fifths.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Where are the drawing tips, I could use those

The 3 years? 3 years.

Maybe that's the band they're in. I mean, I'm part of Something Else...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Seriously as someone who does know music theory, don't go off this. Some of it is ok but a lot of it is just completely wrong.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Circle of fifths is doctrine man. Show me a song that ignores it in its entirety and I'll take back everything I've ever done musically

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It all just sounds like progressive metal band names to me _\w/
