Escaping the city.

Finished work in London at 19:00 and got on a train to the south west.

Arrived at the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park at 23:00 and stepped right into a blizzard.

Made camp in an ancient oak grove (-2 to -4 Celsius at night)

Woke up to a beautiful morning.

Grouse tracks

Sheep Sorrel

Rarer than wood or field sorrel. Beautiful lemony or sour apple taste.

Pristine wilderness

Gorse flowers

Picked a bunch of these for an evening brew.

Medieval ruins

Beautiful fresh water

But always purify to be safe

Wall pennywort or Navalwort

One of my favourites, comparable to cucumber in taste and texture.

Dartmoor wild ponies

Ash Keys

last years, somewhat past their best, gave these a miss.

Ribwort plantain

Edible, can be cooked like spinach but it's best use is medicinal- it can treat many ailments. I have used it for burns and blisters and it is remarkably effective at soothing and promoting healing.

Haw berries

Again past their best. Tea made from these berries with a drop of honey is one of the best wild brews.

Medieval ruins

These look like they were once stables.

Gorse tea

My basha setup

Misty morning

Another ancient oak grove.

My final campsite. These groves were home to the druids in ancient times and when you camp out in them you can almost feel their presence. It’s an eerie yet beautifully atmospheric place.

we live in a beautiful country

huh, i live about a 10 minute drive from Dartmoor, my favourite place is cadover, lovely river, deep enough to jump in in some places!

Imgurites from Devon?! They do exist :) Hello fellow pasty warriors!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Growing up near Dartmoor I wouldn't exactly call it wilderness, most of it is grazing land or owned by the army.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

and what is moorland is largely burnt off every couple of years to stop the forest growing back -_-

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where is this fucking middle earth?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah the oak grove, a perfect place for a wearwolf bite.

But once you do quests and such you get to take all the food and many other things from the palace

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Ha, this was actually one of the things that broke my immersion in the game: A measly 100 septims for killing 8 bandits? Come on!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oooh whereabouts on Dartmoor is this?? I'm from Devon!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great mto see someone who has a connection to nature, many of the problems western societies face today are due to a disconnection from it.

Imagine if we knew each other..! Small world.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Blizzard? You barely got snow on your toes.

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

As Englishmen, we are aware. Sarcasm is a combination of two national past times, bad jokes and complaining.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Did you go on your own OP? That must be so refreshing. Really wish I could get into this.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I go with friends or my girlfriend from time to time but I'm most happy and in my element on my own. It balances the stress of my work life!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True words.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You absolutely can get into this- it need not be an expensive hobby. I started small and grew over years.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

reddit/bushcraft is a good place to start.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you fine sir, this is wud i need

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks man I'll check it out thankyou

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This seems pretty cool. Do you do this often? Where else?

10 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I try and get away at least 4 times a year. Scotland, Wales, Lake district. Im planning bigger trips- Norway later this year, then Canada

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Beautiful parks here in the States. My goal is to visit all 59.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Do you have a blog or website where you share more photos? I'd love to see the Lake District!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll recommend doing it in Sweden, it's very beautiful (please take me with you).

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did you learn to do this?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Depending on where you live there are outdoor classes you can take that teach you these skills. REI is great for this. It's where I learned.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I recommend Finnish Lapland. Cheaper than Norway, not so high mountains but it's breathtaking

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is one of my favorite imgur posts I've ever seen; more please!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Coming to Canada? Then I recommend British Columbia. This is probably the best place for outdoors stuff like that.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Second

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Third!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Always upvote Norway.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you get to the Cloud district very often?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh, what am I saying! Of course you don't.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where in Norway do you plan to go hiking?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Very different hiking up here in Norway. And snowstorms in June might be a challenge..

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a norwegian, she just needs a proper tent and some warmer clothes - other than that she seems capable enough from what I can see here

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, apart from the cold a perfect vacation. Very quiet, I guess?

10 years ago | Likes 491 Dislikes 0

Have you watched "into the wild" ?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is how horror movies start. Quiet and serene. Then, bam!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's like mid-20's Fahrenheit. Even as a Texan, I only go camping when it's like that.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Very quiet. I saw maybe 5 other hikers out there over 4 days. The cold brings solitude.

10 years ago | Likes 261 Dislikes 0

Careful camping there, could be a crossing Tir'nanog and you don't want pesky gators dicking around with ya.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you ever want to bring someone along, give me a ring! I love the cold and I've studied archaeology. Ruins are fascinating!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Enjoyed the finer details, always interested in the unique bits instead of just landscape. The experience becomes more than just a hike.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Could be worse " said the Canadian as a -40 wind attempted to cut through his thick flannel shirt, the wood of his hockey stick creaking

10 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 2

"The wood in his hockey stick creaking" if you know what I mean ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(-40°F for the Americans)

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I read the -2 to -4° bit and thought, "wow, that's a nice Canadian September. As I thought this I had to kick through a foot high snowbank

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Hahaha this I find funny. It's been an OK winter though

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It's not been too bad, though as a skier and hockey player I missed the early winter skiing. Although the outdoor rinks are open now.
