A few years ago I was diagnosed with severe clinical depression. I didn't know why I was so depressed but it took me to a dark place that I didn't know existed. I started cutting, stopped talking and interacting with people, and lost my will to live. In that dark place I reached out to my sister and asked for guidance. She told me to seek professional help and gave me this: A bright box.

On the top of this box was this poem she wrote for me.

Inside she put dozens of envelopes and small gifts all titled something like, "Open when you are in too much pain to get out of bed" or "Open if you can't remember how awesome you are."

This envelope was titled " Open when you need to feel loved." My niece and nephew are the loves of my life so this one especially helped.

This one, "Open if you need a dose of happy." A drawing from my niece.

I did get medical treatment and now feel like a new person but on my darkest days, the time and effort my sister put into this box made my world a little bit brighter.

I think she deserves some recognition for being such an incredible person.

Thank you for reading my story and to those of you who are struggling with depression, it might seem like there is no light at the end of the tunnel but I promise you there are reasons to wake up another day. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid to talk to people who love you. It gets better <3

FP Edit: Thank you all for the outpouring of support. I know it is customary to ask for something if you reach FP so please head over to my sister Sarah's profile @Belikeschwa and wish her a happy birthday! She is truly an amazing person and deserves some birthday love.

Your sister really seems like a wonderful person

You must be an incredible person for your sister to put in such effort.

Glad you got the help you needed. What a great sister. She may have saved your life.

I don't know how I'd make it without her. She's the one who convinced me it's okay to get on meds. I was against it before.

I have been struggling to reach out to a very depressed friend who is just pushing us all ( her friends) away. I think I might try this !

I am lucky to also have an awesome sister like this. Her and I have been each others rock throughout the years. I'm glad you're better

We are lucky people. Sister's are truly a gift. I'm lucky enough to have 2 that I'm very close to. Sarah is really creative. Lisa is honest.

Having come out the other side alive, the only thing that kept me going were my magnificent friends that saw the light in me.

That, and my sister and I don't really talk... :/

@Belikeschwa is truly the best. If it weren't for her unconditional love and support I don't know where I'd be right now.

It's a legit concept, really.Reminds me of a docu,in which people would write a letter to themselves, to confront 'em when they want to quit

What is "clinical" about a clinical depression?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's the nice way to say "severe" depression that's caused by your brain/soul being fucked up for no external reason.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ok, thanks for clarifying :-)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And generally has been diagnosed.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I really want to thank you for sharing this. Both you & your sister are awesome!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

With depression there's not always an external reason for why it happens. Sometimes it happens bc your brain's not operating properly.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ive had someone do this for me and it really helped. You are loved!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Love your sister for this. It's great to see that you guys have a solid bond. Depression is Real &there's nothing like loving support system

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've had clinical depression all my life. I was finally treated at age *40*. I'm now 64. No regrets. Every day has been a gift.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish I felt this love after my diagnosis. I'm left alone, which affirm my fears and hurts my mental health.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

i've found that people just make it worse. They want to help but don't know how, so they decide doing anything is better than nothing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're here and you're not alone. People are pretty open here. Talk about your stuff if you want to.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

everyone's alone. It's dark and cold out here in the real world. People pretending otherwise make the realists think they're missing summin

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Trust me on this, i've worked on it for decades, it doesn't get any better, not for me at any rate, and I am tired of fighting it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Your sister is awesome, but this would make me feel worse. I hate being pitied, sympathized with or cared for. Anyone else?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

personally, I would have still been too depressed to try the box and hated myself for not appreciating the gesture

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hate being pitied too (the tone of voice & that look, ugh), but this box is something I could see my mom doing. We're pretty close so 1/

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

the box brings me positive feelings about it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can you please tell me what was inside "open if you want to eat your feelings"?

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

If it was me, that would be gone in the first day.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chocolate, one assumes.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 1

I stopped cutting about 10 years ago, and a couple months ago, I did it again for the first time. I truly have hit rock bottom.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's no shame in stumbling every now and then. especially after having lasted so long the first time.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've already proved you CAN do it. Try again. You can do it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Good on ye mate. I have Vaunagutts Depression. 90 day cycle day 91 I'm shit for ten days. Reach out some idiot here has your back. I do.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I've never heard of this- would you mind telling me more? Sounds interesting and very familiar

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It is just as it sounds, cycular depression. Google "Kurt Vonnegut".

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So I tried to look this up on google and it only led me to this imgur post.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maybe he means Vonnegut?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I do. Spelling depresses me also.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
