Feels pretty good you guys!

Jan 27, 2019 7:01 AM

Some of you may recall the post I made back in 2018 about finally reaching 150 pages! Well, after just under a year of writing every night, I finally achieved one of my big goals in life and finished writing a book! I'm hoping after I get it edited to try to get it published!! For those interested/curious, I'm including the prologue below. Thank you so much for all the support, and I hope you like it!

FRONT PAGE EDIT: WOW!!! I am stunned, humbled, and THRILLED by all the support! I honestly expected this to die in Usersub, and instead I made Most VIral AND have people messaging me to let them know when preorders are available! You guys have made my day--thank you so much! I will DEFINITELY keep Imgur posted about my progress, and I love and appreciate all the feedback, critiques, and messages you have sent me! You guys have made my week

Narrative hook goes in the first paragraph. Scrap that prologue.

You wrote it? I thought you were just proud of reading it.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wow... Amazing! I'm sure you will be published and I can't wait to buy it.

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I’m so glad you liked it!!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This prologue was amazing. I would love to know when this book will be released :)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I'll keep you posted!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I am at 120 pgs right now. But you good for you! Don't get discouraged for publishing. I'd keep my rejection letters. To show off.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Please update us when you have a release date OP I want to buy your book.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you, I absolutely will!

Only if you want to!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who uses too many commas when he writes, my constructive criticism is you're using too many commas when you write.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I like it, though. I'd buy it.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the feedback! I'm bitterly aware of my love for commas--it's something I need to trim down on!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Share thy secrets! I'm trying to write a book atm. Also, well done! Would read!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It sounds mean but just write! That’s my advice to anyone. “You’re not writing a book if it stays in your head”. Just write and worry about

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Editing and tweaking later. I’m on book 4 of 5 and, believe me, got soooo much to redo in book 1 but you just gotta go for it!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you! My 'secret' is honestly that I write every day; even if it's just a sentence, it's something! Being consistent matters!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fantastic work so far! I have always loved the idea of writing my own book but how do you find the time with so many distractions?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I just write a little bit every day. Sometimes, all I can get down is a sentence, but hey, it's something! That's what matters :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not OP, but what helps in general is treating it like a fixed appointment. Schedule writing time regularly and show up as if it was a class.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Great job, OP. This is absolutely engaging. I have so many questions and would definitely read more. Editing is needed for small grammatical

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Errors, but the writing ideals and the story telling, is so good that the ONLY editing you need is technical. And not much at that. :)

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fantastic. I hope a publisher grabs it up. Good luck to you!!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

First edit: pg 3, I will destroy all of your (should be you) - :-)

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Here’s another one. You used the word ones. I guess technically it’s considered a word but ones is kind of grammatically incorrect

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And "he buried here there"

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Thank you!! I need to print out a physical copy and read through it; it’s so easy to miss errors sometimes!

7 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

It is! Read it aloud, change the font, get a friend to help! That's how my family does it for a friend of ours.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I find it really helpful for my writing to copy paste it into a bot that reads it aloud, you hear your mistakes and it helps find a flow too

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As /u/nzsheeps says one level up from this comment.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also on pg 1, "Not just humans, *as* but the fae creatures as well..."

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Either read it out loud or have software do it. Should help as well.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Lots of potential here. Very excited to see more

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thank you!! I’m so glad you liked it!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I enjoyed that, thanks for sharing

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you for reading!!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pretty good. A little pretentious, but that's probably just me. But yeah, pretty good! I hope you manage to sell lots of it!!!

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I find that somewhat pretentious language cements the fantasy setting, if done right. Personally, I like it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you both! I based the prologue’s style on the many myths and legends that I love to read and tell :)

The night was sultry.?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who are you?

7 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

I'm Owen's friend.

7 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Owen doesn't have any friends.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That's because hes shy.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

NO ITS NOT IT'S BECAUSE HE IS FAT AND HE IS STUPID!

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Here's an idea for you, why not sell it yourself on Amazon or Kindle or something as a digital copy? I use to edit for The Wild Rose Press.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We did that with a lot of books and did prints when requested. It was a teeny, tiny company that grew and became pretty big!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you'd like, I could edit it for free. (Love reading, don't need the money.) You sell it on a couple of online stores, do all the

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Marketing yourself. Use it as an example of your writing when you try to get picked up by a company. "This is my first book, working on a

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Second, would you like to work with me as I need a publisher." Easier to get picked up if you have something out there.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd be happy to buy the finished product as well. Regardless of if you want my help or not. I can do cover art/illustrations as well. ?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Future me buy this

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Future me thanks future you for your purchase!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Have never once had the desire to comment on a post until now. That was incredible. Be proud! Would love to know when the book is available.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much! I will definitely keep you all posted!!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The prologue looks great. I hope you get published.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! So do I!! :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll take the epub when it's finished ?

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I will keep you all posted!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's awesome. I did one as well about the same 248 pages. Are you Self or Traditionally Publishing?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure yet! I wanted to go traditional, but the feedback here has got me reconsidering self publishing.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you have a fan base it can be done. Maybe I should try and post my first few pages. How did you do it?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I converted a PDF to a JPEG :)

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

looks good, OP! feels like there's a segment missing on the first page, just before 'Fearlessly...', like it needs a timeframe for reference

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll definitely check that out!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My wife is about 60 pages into writing her novel, any words of wisdom I could pass on to her?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Write every day! Even if it's just a sentence you know you'll delete tomorrow, you still wrote it and that's what matters!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wow, not even my type of tale but I read a lot and I thought it was beautiful!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love it!!! I do have one critique however: it doesn't really make sense for the Fae Queen to say she wouldn't heal her daughter because /1

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He might find out she was fae. They had lived together all that time and he hadn't noticed already? Presumably he would only notice when /2

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

She didn't age the same way, but if he was that smitten with her its entirely reasonable to say he wouldn't notice until his death bed /3

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If he ever did. So yeah, I love this and think its a fascinating setting, but I think that relationship and the Queens reasoning needs /4

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To be fleshed out differently. Hope to see it on bookshelves!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you for your support and critique!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@OP please tell me the actual book is justified since this is IMO unreadable by dint of bad formatting, text seems fun tho

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What do you mean by bad formatting?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i hate the fact that the lines dont all have the same length, i would VASTLY prefer what word calls "justified" layout

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It will be, don't worry! This is just the rough draft :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sweet, like i said page 1 seemed pretty fun, you go gurl

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! I'm so excited by how supportive everyone has been!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Has there ever once been one of these on Imgur where the book wasn't generic sci-fi/fantasy?

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I think I saw one that was mystery. But scifi/fantasy appeals more to me because it's easier to get lost in. More fun. Less real.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Fake shit ain't fun. A dragon doesn't scare me. A murderer hiding out ready to kill me does, because that's a thing that can really happen.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't read to be scared. I read to enjoy a little time away from work/school/stress. Dragons are fun. Murderers CAN be fun, but not always

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just can't take it seriously if I know it can never happen, makes it hard to get emotionally invested. Feels phony.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The answer is no. 99% of people just write slightly different variations of what they already read/consume.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Curious, what do you consider generic and what would be good/unique?

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's more about it always being fantasy than the generic part, though that doesn't help.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, ok. I like fantasy because it’s boring reading about what already happens every day; like watching dramas on tv. But that’s just me.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I get super bored with reality tv and game shows, or crime shows. I watch and read to get away from "real" stuff.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm so going to buy your book once you publish. When do you think that might happen?

7 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

I’m not sure! I’m on the fence about whether to self publish or not. If you send me a message though I’ll let you know once I know!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Can you afford a professional editor or do you self-edit? And have you looked into Jenna Moreci's videos about self-publishing?

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love Jenna Moreci! She cracks me up! I haven't watched her self-publishing videos, but I will!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, she gives good insight into what it takes to do this. (TL;DR: It's a heckton of work.)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I figured it would be, but it'll be worth it. Being published has been a dream of mine for a LONG time!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have an English degree, so for this round I'm self-editing. After that, however, I'm definitely going to be looking into a professional!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Neat. (Congrats about the degree.) ... So, I guess you have stumbled over Ellen Brock's videos about self-editing?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have not! I'll definitely look into those! Thank you for the tip!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's amazing @OP, this has been one of the few times a prologue has grabbed me like that, what's the title and when's the release?

7 years ago | Likes 158 Dislikes 2

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

dot for later bookreadings!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Woah I want to buy that. I keep asking myself what the riddle is.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thank you so much everyone! Once I know about a preorder, I will let you know!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The title right now is "Stories Old," and I'm afraid I don't have a release date yet; it needs editing first! But I'm so glad you liked it!

7 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 2

It's very rare to read "amateur " book posts on here and for them to feel as nice to read as yours, good job!

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Can it be preordered? I'm always looking for more books to read and I like supporting people starting out.

7 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Not right this moment, but if you message me I’ll DEFINITELY let you know when it can be! Thank you so much for your feedback/support!!

7 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 0

Same. I'll take a copy

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Same, would definitely love to read the book!
