In the olden days, Family Game Night meant a combative round of Monopoly, yawn-inducing game of Life, or hours-long session of Risk. Board games have come a long way in recent decades; they cover so many genres and can have such complex storylines that they rival books or film. You may be familiar with some of the new wave of board games, such as Settlers of Catan, but there are so many amazing new games out there that we think you should give board game night another try. We’ve put together a selection of our favorites for you to scope out!
Terror In Meeple City, an interactive kaiju monster adventure
We’ll begin with Terror in Meeple City, the game the awesome employees of Imgur are playing in the above gif. Terror in Meeple City turns even the most mature gamer into a silly little kid again. In this game, you are a giant, Godzilla-esque monster, and your goal is to destroy as many buildings and eat as many citizens of Meeple City as possible. Unlike more sedate games, where you might state your actions, in this game you must act it out! Would you like to make a breath attack to knock down a building? To do so, you leave your chair, go to the side of the game board with the building in question, take a deep breath, and blow. In this game, be prepared to flick pieces, knock down buildings, and become the biggest monster on the block.
Protip: Terror In Meeple City was first released under the name Rampage, and is still available for sale under both names. The only difference between the two is the name on the box!
Betrayal at House on the Hill, a haunted house horror story with a twist
You know those movies where the characters should NOT go in that one scary house, but they do anyway, and terrible things happen? That’s Betrayal at House on the Hill. What begins as a cooperative effort in exploring a haunted house turns into a battle for your lives as one random player turns against everyone else. With dozens of betrayal scenarios and a randomly laid out map, the game varies greatly with each play. Will it be vampire bats, ghostly possession, or cannibals that tear your friendships apart? You should probably stay away from this house, but we bet you’re going to find out anyway…
Smash Up, a deckbuilding game with more flavors than Baskin Robbins
Another great game that varies each time you play it, Smash Up is a card game in which you select two armies, build your deck, and try to capture bases. The first person to fifteen victory points wins. It’s very simple in concept, but allows for a lot of variety!
The charm lies in the selection of your armies, which cater to odd and specific interests, feature great art, and witty jokes. There are over twenty armies available currently, with more expansions in the works. Here are some examples of armies you can combine:
- For the bro who must smash: Bear Cavalry + Cyborg Apes
- For the parent who can quote Disney in their sleep: Princesses + Mythic Horses
- For the HP Lovecraft superfan: Cthulhu Cultists + Elder Things
- For the Anglophile: Time Travelers + Super Spies
- For the lover of B movies: Killer Plants + Aliens
Our personal favorite? Ninjas + Pirates. It’s a classic combo, but it doesn’t disappoint!
Timeline, a game where history and trivia buffs can really shine
Timeline is a very simple game to learn but quite tough to master! Its concept: make a timeline of events from earliest to latest. Sounds pretty easy, but how well can you order the most iconic inventions? What about movies and music? How about events in American history?
Each set of Timeline focuses on one theme (e.g. inventions), and players must place all cards in their hand into a central timeline in correct order. At the onset, this is quite easy, but when you have more than 20 cards lined up, pinpointing the exact year gets quite difficult! This game is really fun to play with folks of all ages (i.e., is not too complicated to explain to your parents and grandparents). It also sparks a lot of conversation, either in reminiscence of a film mentioned or surprise in how early an object was actually invented.
Pandemic and Contagion, post-apocalyptic games with opposite goals
Pandemic is a collaborative strategy game in which you try to save the world (literally) against a medical catastrophe. The party selects different roles in science, government, and medicine in an effort to combat the outbreak of four diseases before the world is consumed. There are several expansions available that add new scenarios to conquer and roles to play, just in case saving Earth becomes old hat! If you enjoy strategizing with your friends to win, Pandemic is the game for you.
If you like to watch the world burn, you might be interested in Pandemic’s evil twin: Contagion. Contagion allows you to become the disease, and this time there are no other players to stop you from contaminating the world. To win: build your little disease self up strong and destroy more cities than your opponents.
Will you choose to be the savior or the villain? We prefer both, depending on our mood.
Forbidden Desert, a cooperative struggle to survive an arid desert
Forbidden Desert is another game that requires cooperative effort between players, simply because the game itself is more than enough to kill you on its own. Your group is a party of explorers who crash-landed in a desert, where you face death by dehydration and sandstorm. Each player’s unique job role factors into your survival, from storing water to traveling more efficiently through the sand. If you work together, you might be able to recover the pieces of the flying ship you need to escape before the desert defeats you.
Protip: If you like Forbidden Desert, you’ll definitely enjoy the first game in the series, Forbidden Island. In this game, your group of explorers must find hidden artifacts before the island you’re on sinks into the ocean.
Mysterium, a visual game of whodunit
If you’re a fan of mystery games like Clue and visual charades like Dixit, you will love Mysterium. This game, originally from Poland, has recently been translated to English and is sure to become a huge hit on American soil. In Mysterium, a murder has been committed and the party must work together to figure out the details. One player is the amnesiac ghost, whose only method of communication is illustrated cards. The remaining players are a group of psychics who have seven in-game hours to suss out who the killed the ghost, in which room, and with what weapon. We think it was Mr. Green in the hall with the revolver, but we may be mistaken.
Cat Tax: Exploding Kittens, the most-backed Kickstarter campaign of all time
For our cat tax, we must choose none other than Exploding Kittens. This simple and fun game, designed by The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman, is the most backed Kickstarter project to date. If you’re not one of the 219,382 folks who pledged a copy, we recommend you check it out. It’s a very simple premise: cats are trying to blow themselves up, and you must stop them. What could be quite morbid is actually very ridiculous and silly, thanks to The Oatmeal’s writing and art. It even comes in an NSFW version, for those who prefer a more risque set of cats.
In case you don’t win, you can always quit with style.
We hope you enjoyed our look at amazing tabletop games, Imgur! Nothing beats a great game night with family and friends, especially when there is more fun things to do than steal your sister’s Monopoly money when she gets up to use the restroom. Happy gaming!
Thank you Imgur employees Carlos, Zak, Andy and Aaron for participating in our promoted post!
Ethyne
If you're going to buy pandemic, don't bother with forbidden desert.
TheInnocentCriminal
Might be a more popular one, but Catan has and will always have my heart.

Forbidden Island FTW

A single post can only have so much...but I think Ticket to Ride is worth mentioning

Yes! My husband is out of town for work for 8 weeks and we play online together.

mynameisdrew
You mother fucker! This was going to be my comment! ughhhh + 1

Also highly recommended: Epic Spell Wars, Lords of Waterdeep, and Spartacus.

A couple of these games can be seen on Geek and Sundry's Tabletop youtube. Check em out.
MasonJKnight
I've picked up several games from Tabletop. They've taken over an entire bookshelf in the dining room now!

.
CaractacusItsMeYourOwnFather
I love watching their tabletop videos. I've been wanting to get Pandemic, Carcassonne, Alhambra, and Tsuro. But I can't justify most of them
CaractacusItsMeYourOwnFather
The cost I mean. Not just yet. Hoping the wife will get me some for Christmas.
jondeere89
Pandemic is incredible. Even with 2 people it is still really challenging!
P0tt34
I got Exploding Kittens NSFW Edition. I do not regret that purchase in the slightest.
eBay
P0tt34
Lol, yes!
holtyun
I've played ping pong there!
BreadInCaptivityBakery
Coup and Tsuro! The Resistance is the next on my list :D
honknwave
Resistance is fun, we have the expansion as well which adds some much needed alternate play styles.
tangledreece
There's also a version of resistance called Avalon based on King Arthur. It's even better than the original.
BreadInCaptivityBakery
Weirdly enough, I gave this as a gift to someone when I did the Reddit boardgame exchange a few months ago. Thanks for the suggestion!
smellsofsnickerdoodles
avalon is a re-skin of the original that includes one expansion packaged in with it. you can still play regular resistance with avalon
moneymouf
Saw Mysterium at GenCon this year! Very cool game! Also, if you like Pandemic, check out Pandemic: Legacy!!
SirGellahad
If you are a table game fan and haven't played Seven Wonders, you're missing out.
DarmokatTanagra
Love the Leaders, Babylon, and Cities Exspansions!
zeckell
If you like HP Lovecraft stuff, check out Arkham Horror!
TheChandrian
I have to admit, that it's about my least favorite game ever. But I don't play many Ameri-trash style games so that makes sense.

ALL HAIL CTHULHU!!! ALL HAIL CTHULHU!! PLEASE DONT KILL ME OH GOSH NO. PLEASE
honknwave
We played that, similar in style to Fortune and Glory which is more straightforward Indiana Jones.

I love that I own, or have played, every one of these games. Yay, games!

Every time I see these promoted post, the top comments are always somebody riding the advertisers dick. You never see that on normal post 1/2
Melinyel
But still, smart move on Ebay's behalf to have someone who knows the community make the ad.

Concur. Without a doubt my most favorite game ever.
TheChandrian
I have a copy of Duel reserved at my local store, and I'm really looking forward to when they get it in.
hoffie4
Also look at the following games: Shadows Over Camelot, Yggdrasil, Lords of Waterdeep, Splendor, Mice & Mystics, Tikal, and Dead of Winter
Justineer
I will always upvote Lords of Waterdeep. And Splendor. Mice & Mystics wasn't bad either. I need to check out the rest of these!
hoffie4
Definitely do that. They are all really good games. If you are interested, I can send you a list of other great games that I've found
uvu3nvy
+1 for Pandemic!
eBay
youareprobablyanidiot
We still haven't won a session yet. 3 attemps man.
uvu3nvy
I feel you. We usually win the easiest level, but any higher level of difficulty and it's generally not good.
slack3rdav3
Need Smallworld on here
Falconess
I just submitted a comment about Smallworld. I agree with you!
PixelHead777
What this should really promote is GO TO YOUR LOCAL GAME STORE. Whether it's D&D or just the weekly board-game night, is fun!
verticae
But-but I just got back from there to buy my wife a mini for her new Half-Elf rogue
PixelHead777
Ooh, if you already have a D&D group then if you want to board games you can just arrange with them.
ZachPutland
They went out of business. Now what?
PixelHead777
That super sucks, and I hate that this happens. Perhaps there's a community center nearby. You can try to start a day up.
PixelHead777
In this case you can buy one of the games via eBay or Amazon or whatnot, say "I have x game, looking for y and z, come play" or some such.
ZachPutland
I have Munchkin with a few expansions but the group of friends I played with is no more so now it just collects dust. Shame
TheGuywithTehHat
But that doesn't get eBay or Imgur any money.
Superbeefus
All of this.
autumnmist
I like the way you think. The closest board game store to me has a game night on Wednesdays. Stays open late, can play any of their games!
MyPantsAreMagic
Pandemic is good if you don't have friends because you can play by yourself
SirGellahad
....sad face
Idonothingwrong
You can? I should get it!
MyPantsAreMagic
Yea. And I personally think it's easier with less people. I usually play with 1 other person
TheChandrian
That's my general rule for cooperative games. Alpha gamer/general bickering can become big problems with more people.
MyPantsAreMagic
There's also a limited number of turns, so with 4 people you only get like 7 turns but with 2 people you get twice as much
TheChandrian
Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on Cursed Island is my favorite cooperative game to play solo.
bochikiniki
One word... Coup. That's a good game
tangledreece
We all start by pulling 3 coins and everyone gets pissed off because we run out of money and no one calls anyone out. It's hilarious.
DarmokatTanagra
YES! Espeshally with the exspansion!
smellsofsnickerdoodles
personally don't like the expansion. it takes away your options between turns [opponents can change your/their faction]
TheChandrian
Lying, the game. It's awesome.
DranksAndDragons
Oooh. Add Twilight Imperium.
pastapls
If you have ten years to devote to playing
tvann
Ah TI a good way to make all of your friends hate you after 11 hours.
Orcra956
I just got this game for half off. Even if my friends aren't down to play(which they probably will be) I still got a ton of cool ship pieces
bochikiniki
if you have a half a day to play one game... then yeah
goldensky
The legendary 14 hour game that nobody wants to commit to.
iamireland
No. You don't get to make more suggestions.
Jamblesquack
My little brother just got that 2 days ago. I'm gonna play my first game today.
BattloidKouji
Try eclipse. similar game but plays faster, one of my favorite games of all time.
nickler
that isn't revitalizing a board game night, its ruining your friendships.
tvann
I can't even bring up TI anymore my friends hate it so much.
DranksAndDragons
Is that not the point of board game night? Shit we've been playing it wrong....
Ethyne
That escalated quickly
Barreldragon25
While i too love my giant space opera i don't think most people will want to spend 10 hours on a board game.
TentacleRat
Killed more REAL friendships than Monopoly!
TheChandrian
Let's play some Mage Knight while we're at it.
McFluffums
You think your average imgur browser has 3-5 friends with 9 hours to play an intergalactic war?
squirrelnest
live near Louisville KY? I always have need more people for my T.I. table. PM me.
DranksAndDragons
.....Yes? I dunno. *shrug* If you can play Betrayal five times in a row, you can play TI. We might just have crazy friends though.
hoffie4
They should. Otherwise they are living wrong
kodermike
9 hours? You must be playing the quick version.
kodermike
Seems relevant: https://imgur.com/qvGQgNH
emmuppet
Exactly. Plus 3-5 friends? Gotta get the expansion and play with 6.
capflavex
You, I like you.
JosephGordonLevittsLeftSock
a.k.a. the game that i keep in a tackle box because it has so many fucking parts.
IAlwaysUpvoteFirefly
That is also the same thing to say about The Firefly Board Game.

I just started running a D&D campaign, and once the game has gone a bit I want to incorporate Betrayal somehow. Have the player's 1/2

I'm on Imgur! I'm the dude in last pic who misses the table flip by a few seconds...

Ahaha aw, you're adorable.
neatomagneto
That was hilarious HAHA. I love how you tried to fake it anyway!
armyguy
nice hair, not.
catnzhat
Thanks!
catnzhat
I've been meaning to get my hair cut for the past few months, too busy fighting the overcapacity giraffe.
BiGMaC1996
Well you kept your cool pretty well considering your friend flipped the board. Flipping the board is a dick move.
blaze077
Especially when it's in the middle of a game. ಠ_ಠ (◣_◢)
laposheureux
Fortunately this was at the end :)
aMotleyFool
Given the game's description, It seems like flipping the board at the end of it would be in keeping with the spirit of the game.
StorellaDeville
I'm thinking maaaaayybe this was planned. Staged, even.
BiGMaC1996
So his friend was just pretending to be a dick. Still doesn't make it cool to flip the board.
StorellaDeville
It is a play. A comedy. FICTION. THEY ARE ALL LAUGHING AND HAVING FUN. No humans were harmed in the making of these images.
BiGMaC1996
It's normalizing game board flipping and thats extremely problematic- haha im just kidding, pretending to be a feminist.
koebim
If you like Pandemic, let me tell you about Pandemic: Legacy. Most intense game I've played.
Ethyne
No thank you, spoilers.
koebim
SPOILERS: It's amazing. I refuse to spoil anything else.

There's viruses and stuff.

HOW COULD YOU

anonymity brings out the worst in me. :(
thespottedbunny
go on!
koebim
It's Pandemic as a legacy game. The downside is that the game has limited plays, 12-24 full games. But as you play, permanent changes happen
kawaiilovessarah
i need this in my life
koebim
Card get destroyed and ripped up. Characters can DIE. Rules get added and changed as you progress through the campaign. It's awesome.
thespottedbunny
ohhh like Risk Legacy, which IMO saves that game. Nice.
thespottedbunny
Google says there are 2 versions; any feelings on the red vs the blue?
koebim
The designers have stated there's no difference between the versions. I think the reason for the two colors is so you can more easily have-
koebim
- multiple campaigns going at once with different groups and be able to tell them apart.
