tldr; adopt animals which get passed over due to age or other factors, yeah it's a little pricey, but they're characters in their own right

Meet Ronald. He’s covered in shit and frail. Has zero teeth. The shelter said it was dental disease- we took him to our vet and they couldn’t find any teeth. So I guess we don’t have to worry about him biting us?

He loved the scratches at the kennel though- note the inside of his paws, he gets lonely (or anxiety who knows) and obsessively licks his arms till they bleed- he's all but stopped this behavior now. He's pretty thin, and was super food aggressive (living on the streets of NYC will do that to ya).
Did I mention that he had uncontrollable diarrhea? COVERED EVERYTHING IN SPRAY POOP WHEN HE CAME HOME. INCLUDING A CELL PHONE.
CATS CAN FART. ITS TERRIFYING.

Anyways, he’s doing a bit better I’d say. Hasn’t quite figured out what a bed is, but after a few showers (he’s dumb and doesn’t know how to clean himself- literally no idea what to do), he sleeps through everything- including vacuuming.

So he doesn’t have teeth so his cheeks sag a bit, you can see his mouth does more of the :3 like the emoji here. He also likes to be snuggled on car rides. Seriously, he just sits there for a 3 hour ride and snoozes.

It took us 7 months to find medicine which would alleviate his explosive diarrhea, which requires three medicines, two twice daily.
He’s cost us a ton in vet bills, but every minute was worth it. Watching him have explosive diarrhea on my girlfriends cellphone was worth the thousands we have put into him.
Make sure you adopt from your local shelter. Get the weird ones who get passed over. Ronald was a few days away from being put to sleep at the shelter, and has been so affectionate since we pulled him out of that cage.

Cat tax? I guess? He’s a weird one.

If anyone has any questions about adopting cats with issues, please reach out and message me!

Good on ya OP!

What a precious kitty ???? ????

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hahah “precious” for sure

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have two cats I've taken in from a shelter, and are the best company I could wish for. Give shelter cats a chance.

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They’re the ones who deserve it. The assholes. :D

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Local shelter even has programs which would cover all future medical expenses when adopting a special needs animal.

7 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

DO THIS! THEY ARE EXPENSIVE!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lol I love the animals that have zero clue how to act "he doesn't clean himself literally has no clue"

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah he’s just missing that part of his development. No wonder the jerk has no teeth, he was probably chewing on rocks haha

I once adopted a cat from a school yard as the school was being shut down for good. Once she set foot in my flat she wouldn’t 1/2

7 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

You did Awesome, hope she enjoyed her time with you

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Go out again if she didn’t have to, she was so happy to finally have a home. 2/2

7 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

This post has made me get off the fence about whether to adopt. Thank you.

7 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Get an old homie!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Scratch and dent kitties are the best kitties

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

HAhahah I love this. They sound like a 1 star moving company

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So true. We have a beautiful spca cat with ptsd, had her almost 3 years and she’s still apprehensive with petting. I still love her a lot :3

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Omg poor thing. Does she get the twitchies?

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Some twitchies but more just very scared of everything. She spent the first 6 months behind our couch, we even had to feed her behind it.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are a true hero <3

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nah just idiots with a little too much disposable income hahahahaha. Ronald appreciates it

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have 3 12 yr old cats Ive had since before they were born (foster cared) and when they pass, I plan on adopting these kinds of cats.

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The old, the overlooked, the ones witha few years left and who could use a ton of love before they go, maybe forthe first time in their life

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You’ll find them, doesn’t mean you didn’t give your current ones a great home though :)

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Once mine are gone, I'm just going to go and say "give me the one no one wants"

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

That’s the way to do it. Needs more upvotes

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Please do this! I've struck gold twice ❤️

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You are good people ! Thats a lot to take on. He's a sweet old guy and deserves tons of love.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He’s getting a ton of love don’t you worry

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We rescued a Ginger Tabby. All of his teeth missing, broken leg & hip and a bunch of others issues. His name is Gilligan and we love him

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

NEED PHOTOS!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha he’s sitting on the couch with his tongue out like a moron reading these comments

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aw.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same with shelter dogs! Got an 8 yo w/ few teeth, skin condition, snuggled w/ me b/c of a t-storm. Wouldn't trade her 4 the world!

Seconded for pictures!

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We require pictures.

Girlfriend and I are going to adopt today. While I'm not in a financial situation to handle something like this, we've discussed that if

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I agree, we were fortunate to be doing well enough to take care of him. There are some pet insurance programs out there as well- no pressure

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

there is one there who is missing an eye or a leg or something, we're going to take them because you're right, they do get passed over.

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's great when people do this, but I think it's also fair if people can't afford to or can't emotionally handle losing a pet sooner.

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Indeed- no forcing. We’ll be devastated when he retires.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm crying and laughing

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s ok there are tissues and more tongue pics

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for giving Ronald an affectionate and comfortable forever home.

7 years ago | Likes 757 Dislikes 2

Adopt from a shelter. Especially if they have explosive diarrhea.

7 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

"Hello SPCA? Do you have any cats with explosive diarrhea? Yes? Awesome. I'll be there post-haste."

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Weaponize it

7 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

“Hello do you have cats with explosive diarrhea?” *covers phone* “call the president, we’re ready to begin Operation Catastrophe”

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Somewhere, an engineer at Raytheon just got promoted.

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He looks a bit like my Noisy Nag. Rescued her from a crack house 2 years ago. No regrets.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Whoa. Need stories and picks. Noisey nag the crackhousw Cat needs to be a children’s book?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ronalds whole perception of life and what it has to offer has been irreversibly improved by you. You've changed his universe for the better

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah this was our main goal, he won’t have to worry about finding food or being filthy... well he still needs showers, but not as frequently

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have same story old toothless cat from shelter licking his ass till bleeds, shit stinks like carrion, love car rides, I love him. High fiv

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hahah I think you and I share the same love / wtf are you doing Cat lifestyle. Good on ya!

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If I rescued an old cat, the loser would be me. Because then I will have to say goodbye to my best pal in just a few years. Tough choice..

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You’ll never know. I’ve picked up an 14yr old cat, which is quite old. Turned out she passed away at the age of 22. You’ll never know..

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I rescued a two year old cat. She still has a long time to live yet. The tradeoff is it takes them much longer to grow comfortable with you.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

a healthy 2 year old kitty can live 15-19 years! 2-4 year old cats can be quite healthy & live a long time if they are indoors. love a cat!

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Isnt it usually older and unpleasant cats that get dumped at a pound? Why would you ditch a young little sweetheart?

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IDK. My local no-kill ALWAYS has some 2-4 year olds, really nice kitties whose humans could not keep them. Lots of older folks in my county.

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could be lots of reasons: a ~friend just surrendered a 3 year old girl because BF problems & her new place is no pets. She's heartbroken. :(

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is tough. We tried to weigh the benefits of: well it’s gonna suck for however longer he’s got, might as well fill it with tuna.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you are strong enough for goodbyes, and you are doing it for the cats sake, its a beautiful thing to do.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is a really eloquent way of putting that feeling into words

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Got a shelter cat who was returned and probably abused by his first family. Most cuddle happy cat I've ever had.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Omg. Cherish her. NOW!

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I do. He's very skiddish of men, even hubs. Every morning when hubs gets up he'll leap into bed and demand snuggles. He's the best.

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are awesome :) How/what does he eat with no teeth, poor love ?

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He only eats wet food, and these giant pellets which sit in water and turn into a gruel/paste. He’s also adept at pulling food off ur plate

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My cat only has front teeth and still loves dry food best. She also gets wet food but eats the dry first. She.. gums it I guess??

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah they gum the shit out of stuff hahaha. Like my armpit when I’m sleeping

7 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bad thing about dental diseases is that they damage organs over time by getting into the bloodstream. Wish him luck.

7 years ago | Likes 325 Dislikes 0

My cat only has two teeth left, due to dental disease :(

7 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh, he also has underbite, so he is really cute and dumb looking

7 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But he was worth the effort- at least for the rest of however long we have him, he’ll be comfortable and have food.

7 years ago | Likes 175 Dislikes 0

May your life be full of joy for what you did - I guess Ronald pays you back already

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You is good people

7 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 0

That's how my family lost a dog as 6. We didn't value tooth care, he got a bad tooth, infection with 0 signs until suddenly fatally ill...

7 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I’m sorry :(

7 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah he’s got an enlarged liver- they have no idea how old he is or how long he’ll live. I’d be surprised if we got 2-3 years out of him.

7 years ago | Likes 144 Dislikes 1

Count the purrs you get, not the days.

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I hope you get more than that - you both deserve it!

7 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

One of mine has a hereditary ticking time bomb in his bones. His twin died of some form of leukemia about 8 months ago. 1/

7 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The living one could develop the same disease tomorrow, next year, could never get it at all, hell it could have already triggered. 2/

7 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Doesn't mean he's going anywhere, though. He's our big grey dumbass no matter what.

7 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Right that’s what matters! They’re our assholes!
