What bothers me about the whole thing is why regular people care about a party for fancy actors in the first place

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 3

Hollywood is nothing but a circle jerk. Change my mind.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

Shape of Water was great, memesters and non watchers are 90% of the ones who talk down on it.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Funny how so many people here in the comments hate the Oscars and view them as irrelevant yet can't seem to stop talking about them.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who needs the Oscars? at 10:30pm Eastern NASA is launching a solar probe.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why should any normal person care about the actor peoples awards? The only people that are affected by these awards are them.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well the academy is a useless piece of shit... So who gives a fuck.

6 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 8

Your style I like it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both the Oscars and modern movie critics have yet to realize they are largely irrelevant in today's world.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Wish I won an award for doin my job

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anthony Hopkins ate a man's face and won the oscar

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I stopped caring about the Oscars the moment it was revealed it's all bought and paid for. Art and Talent mean nothing.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

So you've never cared about the Oscars?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or that the votes don't watch most the movies.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Let me tell you about the Hollywood Star..

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He was good, but I’d hate to say it... Heath ledger still blew him away. Two different types of Joker though so they aren’t very comparable.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Oscar is a joke award ,popularity contest but -unpopular opinion: Joker wasn't that good

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The plot, the acting, the themes--all definitely deserve an Oscar. Let's push for getting Taxi Driver the award it deserves.

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

I feel like the movie takes more elements from The King of Comedy

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Baby's first Taxi Driver" is my favourite put down description of Joker.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I love it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The fish fucking movie was good though.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How many awards it gets will depend on how good the goodie bags the studio give to judges are.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If we all stop watching the Oscars maybe they'll go away... ether way, they need to fuck off with this bullshit.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Sad women who live for their vicarious lives thru TV will NEVER stop with awards shows and shitty "reality" TV. It'll never die, sadly.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

but it wasn't a WHITE fish so...

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

That voter may not have voted for the fish fucking either

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Isn’t that what art is supposed to do? To make us uncomfortable, inspire us, to make us think? Oscar voters forgot they’re voting for art 1/

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

...not a popularity contest. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not necessarily what it's *supposed* to do, art can do a number of other things, but it's certainly within the realm of possibilities.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ahh The Oscars, Hollywood's annual political speech show, where studios pay money for a golden statue which grants the holder a rant.

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 15

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

It's the industry publically masturbating.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Controversy is one of the reasons a film should be considered. Stamping on The Shape of Water to make the point is bad.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

i hated that movie. besides maybe the look.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I can understand not enjoying it, but what made you hate it, exactly?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

everything was so over the top, antragonist especially but none of the protagonists were likeable either (imo).

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

story was bland overall, nothing special about it. i'm also no fan of singing and dancing in movies.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't say I got those feelings, myself, but you can't really decide who you like. I watched it as more of a fairy tale, where all the (1)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

characters are a little bit exaggerated for effect. That's always been Del Torro's style. (2)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve never seen the media so disappointed that ppl didn’t die, when the Joker premier happened

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 11

You mean that media that was only reporting what the FBI and law enforcement said?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 14

I mean the media that took a off comment from an officer from another state to link mass shootings with the Joker. No connection

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/03/us/joker-movie-security-threat/index.html Yep. Totally that evil media making stuff up yeah?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I mean it’s not as though there was ever a mass shooting at a movie theater, let alone one connected the character of the Joker. /s

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

Nope, he picked that movie b/c it was the biggest release at the time. He did not idolize or was at all inspired by the joker. It was a >

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

>comment by an NYPD officer b/c of the guys hair. If he was a fan, HE WOULD’VE GREEN HAIR. It’s all media conjecture

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Joaquin was amazing. Reward the actor, isn't that what the award is about?

6 years ago | Likes 345 Dislikes 8

He did amazing, that's why he got nominated. That's the reward, not a guarantee win.

6 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

No the award isn't about that at all. It's all a popularity contest and old assholes giving star stickers to people.

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 9

Sort of like the Nobel peace prize.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

IIRC - the individual awards are voted on by their peers. Actors vote on best actor, etc. Still can get played though

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

You don't actually believe there's a real voting process behind these awards do you?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Are you antivax too?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 6

No?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The sooner people stop taking the Oscar for anything other than the joke it is the better they'll feel.

6 years ago | Likes 3201 Dislikes 41

John Wick killed like 6 people every 10 seconds and no one bats an eye. Joker kills 5 the entire movie and everyone loses their minds

Awards given to celebrities by celebrities to celebrate their celebrity. It's just a fucking circle jerk.

6 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 8

As someone who works in an artistic industry i actually really enjoy awards given to me by my peers. It means a lot.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It's not really the same, though.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Beautiful rich people giving each other gold statues

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I have never watched it but I have discovered some really good independent and foreign films because of Oscar buzz.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's an industry award for an industry that they don't work in, no one cares about the helpies, which are given out for the best IT helpdesk

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is a giant marketing campaign for movies. "This movie must be good, it won an Oscar"

6 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Except most people watch the films *before* they get an Oscar.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

When it goes to DVD, its all over the cover

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Fair point. I haven't bought a DVD in forever so it completely skipped my mind.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And that proves another point most people don't buy DVDs nowdays

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The oscars is just a group of rich ppl (its a 10k membership to get in and be a member) thinking they know wtf they're talking about.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think Oscar Mayer should buy this event and call it the Oscar Mayer Awards and give out golden hotdogs.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

wait there are people who still take that thing serious?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It's literally just an industry awards, it'll be like turning out for the annual Yorkshire Fish Mongers awards. Though more respectable.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I'd watch those

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah...an industry that produces things that *almost* everyone consumes...

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Celebrate your local fishmonger

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Harvey Weinstein had a big part to play in making it what it is today and that should tell you all you need to know.

I mean he’s a rapist, but did he make the oscars into some sinister thing, or is it just his involvement that makes it terrible?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually even that isn't enough, the Academy Awards were initially created to help prevent the creation of a proper union.

Exactly! The oscars are a shit show of throwing money around and sucking up (or worse) to ppl in hopes of votes. I mean ffs this is the 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same awards that disqualified Tron WAY back in the day because they claimed "using computers was cheating" or some stupid bs. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I red that a lot of the celebrity committee don't even watch the movies they vote for.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Had an argument with a guy at work about why i dont take any awards show seriously. There is a category for sound editing like come on

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wait, why is an award for sound editing a bad thing? Sound is important in movies.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I agree sound is important but the average person can’t distinguish good editing from great editing so why make an award for it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Our bar for entry is the average person now?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actors sucking each others dicks

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The reason they are uncomfortable with the movie is because it has elements that hit too close to home.

"White male rage, white male rage, white male rage." SNL skit

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I just didnt think it was all that good. Not memorable for me. At the same time I don't get why there was all this upset about it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Yeah, people need to see it and acknowledge it. Calling it offensive is just an excuse to not look at the pile of shit were in.

6 years ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 2

We seem a lot of violence on media, but the one on the this movie was very uncomfortable for certain people.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

for the good ones yes, but for others it's the continued propagation of the, "evil white male" narrative some people tried to push.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

The ruling class does not like films that portray the ruling class as ruling poorly. So of course the liberal bourgeoisie doesn't like it.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Makes sense. So did Home Alone and it didn't win an Oscar either :D

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like a million other movies out there

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

Yeah, but they don't hit it big and are often not made by big studios so they can be labeled indie arthouse and safely ignored.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

https://youtu.be/Kp1pUImNaz0 - This guy does a good explanation

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mainly the failing mental health system, and the wide spread effects that has.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

The main is that mental illness is something that people like to ignore rather than face, and the govt treats it like a joke

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Nitrogen, some Oxygen. Lots of Carbon.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Yup... "Hey! Let's give the big first prize to a film (any film) that helps us deflect best!"

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It takes a bold stance that maybe billionaires are too rich, and the rest of us are too poor. How shocking.

6 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 17

If you walked out of it thinking Joker was the hero of the message of the movie, you missed the point of how fucked that mentality was.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh... you mean socialist propaganda.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 55

I hope you don't support the American military because they're rather socialist. That also means you're un-American, according to the right.

6 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

I hope you deny social security and medicare out of principle. Also, if something is true, it's not propaganda. They've got you brainwashed.

6 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

Propaganda can still be true. Propaganda is just any media intended to positively portray a given thing, whether a nation, an ideal, or (1)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

a product. Spin artists in the 50s started to call it "public relations" because of the taint of nationalistic propaganda being too (2)

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not to mention that mental health is uncomfortable for everyone and it would be easier if those people would just "go away"

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

while I can only empathize with your situation, I want to clarify my original comment isn't how I actually feel - just commenting on society

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Am I the only one that wasnt impressed by this movie? If it weren't using DC names this would've been a mediocre independent film

6 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 24

It is very meh in its structure. But you know it has no cgi so it’s revolutionary.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People overhyped the shit out of it. It was definitely a good film, but it didn't deserve 11 nominations.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Frankly I think the movie would've been better if it was an independent film, the references to Batman felt kind of forced and unnatural.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I said from the beginning. If you have never seen anything like Joker and you like it. You should see more movies.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Saw for the first time last night. Loved it. I can understand how it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It had good bits (mostly Joaquin's performance) and bad bits too. I was disappointed that it wasn't more shocking given the reception.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I overall liked the flick, had like a 70's vibe for an extended episode of criminal minds. Not the best joker though.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 8

Omg yes!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I disagree with you, but I understand why you say that

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

It's basically just Taxi Driver or Raging Bull but with a comic book sheen. There's a reason they hired De Niro to play the tv host.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

The King of Comedy, too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Poor man's taxi driver

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You could remove every single DC reference and it would still be a eerily real look at the desperation locked inside mental illness. 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 6

It would improve the film to remove the DC stuff. The scenes with Thomas Wayne are the bits I liked least.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless you were just expecting joke flowers and pet hyenas and henchman. This was a loose adaption and a more real world look at an origin.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 5

No, no it wouldn’t. It’s not realistic, it’s a cliched stereotype of inaccuracies, pushing the false idea that the mentally ill are a danger

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

In my real world experience of the mental health system, as both a person with mental illness And the carer for a relative with one: No.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Are you saying there are no dangerous mentally ill people? No where does this movie say this is indicative of all mentally ill sufferers.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

Because it presents so many examples of non-dangerous mentally ill people? Or because it very clearly establishes that it’s not his illness?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Does it have to? Is this a movie about a very real possibility of a mental breakdown or is it a documentary on every type of mental illness?

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I’m saying that the mentally ill are many times more likely to be the victim of a crime than the perpetrator. Have a little light reading:

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

No one said they weren't. This is one fucking story. Your campaign is very strangr as you expect this movie to encompass so, so many 1/2
