If you are using a free application you are not the customer you are what is being sold.

I never thought a website where I display my personal information for people to see would USE that information!

Great catch. Let’s catch all these suspects for giving us people another chance to see the post again after not seeing it before.

It does have telemetry that can't be disabled bit I don't think it's on the level of facebook. Microsoft just wants you to use their "store"

Windows telemetry can be disabled

Real talk: What did you honestly think you were signing up for? No sense saving “privacy” because it was already DOA after clicking “accept”
aBastardNoLonger
Well I signed up back when it went public and we didn't really know much about data mining back then.

Please stop being one of the 100s to purposely misinterpret this situation. CA’s use of the data was in violation of FACEBOOK terms

Don't talk reason with them. They would rather blame others than admit their own mistakes...
AlwaysandEventuallyHannah
Except this current controversy is about taking data from the contacts of people who 'agreed' not the people who agreed
ToS's aren't gospel, and also this controversy is to do with data being taken from people who DIDN'T accept
Well they are usually legally binding. On data, when you friend someone on FB you give them ability to share your data w/ other apps 1/2
I’m not saying it’s cool, but when someone clicked on those Cambridge Analytica apps they gave it permission to access friend’s data 2/2
They're not as legally binding as people think they are, and you actually can't give somebody permission to access somebody ELSE's data
Well I suspect some court cases are going to be debating those exact points before long so stay tuned...
AmazinglyCoolNameHere
That doesn't sound right, websites usually force you to accept all terms if you register, how could they have not accepted the TOS?
You accept the TOS. The app goes into your contacts and takes the data of your friends and family who did not accept
They don't have to, you did for them.

Terms of agreements are long af and they know no one reads them and therefore often unenforceable

DMCA & CFAA make ToS legally binding & criminal to break.
The privacy terms are usually one of the main categories, and around a page long, it's not that difficult to spot.
Yes - and governments have totally dropped the ball on enforcing plain language T&Cs. But to expect privacy on a service like FB is bit nuts
JakeHand
I agree with you, but I think it's the thoroughness of their data collection that has surprised people. Why do they need my phone records?
ButterJustice
This was curious to me. I downloaded facebooks data on me and no such thing was contained within. Where do people find this?
It’s all about trading off privacy for convenience, but I’m with you man. Glad that it’s finally sparking bigger conversation on the issue!

I get the sentiment, but it's also real bad that everyone just shrugs and says "that's how she goes". Sure, ppl ought to care when they 1/
Sign up, but there also should be some regulation to protect those vulnerable ppl who don't know any better, Americans.
BoJoTo
Quite a broad brush stroke don't you think? I mean, in my American orientation they told me we were stupid and everyone else was better
At everything. Literally every citizen in every other country is better, smarter, and knows everything. But not "you" stupid American boy
But it's tradition in my family to be American, so what was I going to do? Not go to the class? Become educated? No way! Not in my house
GreaterDog
I understood I was signing up for them selling my anonymous info to be used for targeted ads. What I wasn't signing up for was their
customers stealing non-anonymized data and FB doing nothing about it. Being able to attach that info to my voter profile violated FB ToS.
Imagine you share your SSN with a bank and they leak it to someone else. "You knew what you were signing up for" doesn't exempt it
But someone correct me if I'm wrong. I hope consumer protections are still a thing in the Trump era.
Agreed there need to be better consumer protections - it’s been total wild west. But don’t kid yourself, banks share your data too...
