So keep doing what you're doing, if someone complains just tell them it is to critique your form like you did, and if you don't have one, buy a portable phone stand so you can set up out of the way.

If someone is only filming themselves, they should be allowed to do that regardless of gender. Letting male gymgoers film while busting women for the same thing is also gauche.
