While ginger is a good remedy for most people with an upset stomach, DO NOT drink ginger tea if you have ulcers..

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

[general malaise] + [pleasant hot beverage] => feel somewhat better

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Nauseated-feel like throwing up. Nauseous-thing making you throw up. ie. Nauseous road kill is making me nauseated. Goddammit people!!!!!!!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or a big fat placebo, it's all the same crap.

"I have a slow metabolism." No, your body just can't process 3,000 excess calories every day. You don't need green tea.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I find alcohol to be effective in treating all these symptoms, or at least making them all funny.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

My sister was suicidal, but also really health-conscious. She tried to OD on Sleepytime tea. It didn't kill her, but she was REALLY relaxed.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

I've been drinking green tea all god damn day!

11 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

I drink green tead each day too! :D

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

Yes, and it's delicious.

hey this hot water has a smack of leaf to it!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I cannot believe a member of my own family would say something so horrible.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'd just like to point out that most of those are not actually tea. Tea is made with tea leaves.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Thank you.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They're herbal tisane. Only camellia sisensis can make tea.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sorry -_-" not actually my OC, but I would be lying if I said I noticed/knew that rule :P

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Ya, most people don't know the actual rule because nauseous has become common lingo.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Naus-tea-ated (I don't like ginger)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

i dont like ginger either, but have taken it when necessary and like it or not it does help lol

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The best thing against nausea is green ginger tea. (Wermutkraut) I drank it because I was about to puke and ate half a cake afterwards.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a cool chart - like nicely made.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

none of those things are these things. Except green tea for cholesterol, which is different from what this says.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He is hinting that this is mostly unfounded beliefs. Although these beliefs are somewhat widespread, they are not proven do be accurate.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Peppermint

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damned if I can find it... red circle?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm lazy, but it's between the two orange spots top right, to the right of olive leaf extract.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ginger is on there for nausea. And chamomile for... something...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're totally right about ginger, can't find chamomile for the life of me though.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

its er... way bottom left. near the none indicator. So not vouching for its effectiveness just saying its on the chart. haha

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The reason peppermint tea helps with feeling "bloated" is because it supposedly helps you fart. I'm not sure how.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Peppermint is supposed to be an antispasmodic which tells your stomach and intestine muscles to chill out and let gas and such through.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

TIL a thing.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The chamomile contains apidenin, a flavenoid with a mildly anti-anxiety effect.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Ginger is the tits for curing nausea. I used to chew ginger root when I worked on boats to cure the seasickness.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yeah, even I drink ginger ale for nausea, and I'm as skeptical as they come when it comes to herbal medicine (I'm a research biochemist).

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the "it's 'natural' so it must be good for you" attitude is pretty bullshit, but some herbal medicines do work.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ginger does help some people, but many doesn't do anything for (my wife for one).

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

...And this is why the "Supplements" industry rakes in billions. #MoronsWith5thGradeEducation

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 13

Aelinsaar, several of those herbs have double blind studies backing them up. You're full of shit.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Note: Published in a respectable journal of course...

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Please cite.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

I am not responsible for your education. Go out and learn if you actually care. Just stop lying about things on the internet.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Really sweetheart? It took you a day to come up with a way to make being unable to do it sound like an insult? Try harder.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not going to spend my free time finding studies that you won't even read and will quickly ignore once I post them. Do your homework.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oh boy, you're a Truther... Lets pretend I never made the mistake of acknowledging your existence.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Whew! I almost treated you like a human being there for a moment." -Aelinsaar

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

That comment was needless and inaccurate. What makes YOU such a great medical authority, huh?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

I'm not claiming to be one, and selling you shit, now am I?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Observationalist believes that critics of alternative medicine must show qualifications. But there is no such requirement for advocates.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Observationlist is impartial, and believes that assholes from all walks of life should be called out

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I went to medical school and I'm appalled by the sheer amount and variety of crap that's marketed as healthy with bad or no evidence.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Went? Didja graduate? ;D

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

*shrugs* everyone who gets cancer suddenly can't get the FDA to approve [a miracle extract] fast enough. Humans cling to hope.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

US? At least Europe has laws what you can say in your packages. Then again, they do use deceptive marketing.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

[Citation needed] Please provide published+peer reviewed science to back up claims.

11 years ago | Likes 117 Dislikes 16

You can definitely have those kinds of tea when you're feeling those ways. It might not help, but you can certainly do it.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Those peer reviewed studies already exist for several of those herbs. Be honest - you didn't even fucking look, did you?

11 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 7

Not his job, since in science the claimant has to back up his claims.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

Well it's not my fucking job either! He's responsible for his own education.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

damn! Here I thought I was being good citing the actual OP!

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Good job copyright-wise but doesn't settle the science

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well you asked... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Seriously? You dont read your own sources. What does the conclusion of that piece state?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

4 "...in the biological activity of teas. However, tailored human trials with proper placebo or pure molecules are needed."

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

2"scientific evidence of the health effects of tea ingestion on CVD and cancer is mounting. However, no clear-cut conclusion has been reached

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Now you're quoting something that needs more evidence.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 "...Despite the lack of convincing evidence in long-term intervention studies, tea catechins are still the major player..."

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I know there's evidence on the ginger one. because gingerale is also what's used for tummy ache too. :) (and anecdote, it works).

I find it great for my arthritis, as it helps reduce the ache a bit

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's actually clinical evidence for ginger vs nausea (not all forms of nausea though)

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Nevermind that humans have been using these herbs for these problems for eons.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 6

Somehow I can always count on you to say things that are reasonable, thanks Calicos.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

You're welcome!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Nice appeal to tradition. Doesn't prove tea effective for treating diseases though.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

True, but these aren't diseases. But let's take the peppermint one for stomachaches, etc for example. What do you think is in PEPto Bismol?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Common cold is, slow metabolism sounds like woo. It's plausible, but I wonder if you can take up enough ingredient for a therapeutic effect.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you actually read this? I seriously doubt it. And the people upvoting it haven't read it either but are reacting to .edu in the name.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

*sips tea*

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

5 Spoiler: none of the herbs in your source are given a grave above C or B. B, the better, is "inconsistent or limited quality evidence".

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

4 I'd bet good money you didn't go look it up. I did. http://www.aafp.org/afp/2004/0201/p548.html

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

If I didn't look it up I wouldn't have found it and therefore wouldn't have posted it

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You cite this but at least I went out and found some support for the claims here. All you're doing is being a critic with no redemption.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2First of all, the document itself acknowledges that the evidence for all of the herbs is generally weak. The strongest claim made is 'safe'.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

I just pulled up what I had on hand. Your response seems a bit irascible. I hope you hold better control in real life discussions.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Here's some further research http://www.med.nyu.edu/content?ChunkIID=21647

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

True but there is evidence. It's not like the tea wouldn't help.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3 Second, the table itself sorts by "evidence grades" that aren't even made explicit in the text. You have to go look up basis of the grades.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Idk what studies have been done, but I know from using them that these work. And so have people for centuries.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 6

Yah, but people used blood letting for centuries too...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

They still do that in hospitals you know. Leeches and maggots are used in modern medicine.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

...but not in the way they used them back then.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah... I think that's a non sequitor? Damn, how do you spell that word?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a nice anecdote. For centuries, people "knew" that we were the centre of the universe. You may be prone to confirmation bias/placebo

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 8

Sure, but for centuries people have been taking these plants when they have the symptoms of what is up there. They do indeed work.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

I'd bet you could convince the gullible that using different kinds of gummibears would have similar effects. Because Placebo!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

People did all sorts of crazy stuff for a long time. Doesn't mean it's good. And these symptoms go away. Placebo, regression to the mean.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should be extremely easy to measure and record then. Please link to research.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

i'm so lazy bud, there are field guides for this stuff. check out a peterson one. I have one at home based only on wildflowers that is good.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Also, correlation doesn't have to be causation. Most of these issues get better after time, (post hoc ergo propter hoc -fallacy)

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 7

(2/2) open-mindedness, and even if you don't believe, also don't DISCOUNT without evidence.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

I think you people need to have more respect for the fact that most of our modern drugs are synthetic plant derivatives. Have a little (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

3 And thus far I haven't seen RCT data that would back up these claims. If someone delivers, I'm willing to accept it.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

1 What does the origin of some medicines have to do with this? The chemical structure defines the medical properties, not the origin.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I'm just saying: What was once considered ignorant folk medicine is now modern science. Never believe we know everything in science.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

2 I think I'm open-minded, I just want medical claims to be backed up by solid science. Bc it can hurt people & critical thinking matters

Only someone who's not depressed would say exercise. Also, you don't lift a few weights and BAM, your psychological disorder is gone.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What a load. I've been in and out of therapy for chronic depression for the last 10 years. Exercise has helped me more than pills ever did.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And of course the disorder isn't gone, I never implied it. I said endorphins HELP, because they DO.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, pushing a semi-truck HELPS it move, but it's ultimately not going to make a difference.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

So you might as well just not push? Look, it's not a solution, and there is no one-trick solution to depression. But I'd rather do whatever

Crippling depression doesn't usually allow for much movement.

Hey! Haha Im buying some LSD on monday to deal with how sad I am! Oh god im crying inside....

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I wouldn't go with LSD, that one's a mood enhancer. MDMA or Exstacy boosts the seretonin receptors to feel euphoric.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Im trying to find someone, I have a dealer for weed and LSD, just anything that can take me away from my feelings helps.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, but most are 'mood enhancers' as in increases how sad your feeling if you took it when you're sad. Choose drugs cleverly!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LSD can just as easily turn out to cause a horror trip if you're in a bad environment and in a bad mood. Tread carefully.

St. John's Wort - I'll just add for anyone out there, that, if remember correctly, you can't take St. John's Wort if you are on the pill.

11 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 9

It speeds up how a body metabolises, thus medication half-life is shortened...which with BC pills means ovulation chances are higher.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Don't use STW if you're taking ANY manufactured drug. Part of the reason we don't use it medicinally in north america.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

What does it do with the pill?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Decreases the efficacy of the pill and can increase likelihood of pregnancy. Source AMH 2013

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It actually impacts the liver and how it metabolizes drugs.. therefore the birth control pill is metabolized faster and doesn't work as well

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to get bad bouts of 'oh fuck I'm a horrible person' after a night out; been taking SJW now for 6 months and it's a life saver.

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Do other people do that? It genuinely never occurred to me that I wasn't the only one who does this. Every. Fucking. Time.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are other medications that you can't combine with St.John's Wort, too. It greatly increases the rate at which your liver filters (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

stuff out of your bloodstream and the effectiveness of your birthcontrol, your antidepressant, etc, tanks. (2/2_

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

So is that why I couldn't get drunk when I was on st John's wort?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is St. John's Wort? It's not what I think it is... Right?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

St John's wort is a yellow flowering plant and supposed to help with mental problems.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

5HTP is okay too... just make sure you don't take too much or it will make your life hell.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

how does it make your life hell? i used to take it all the time >_>

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Stops you from being able to sleep. Gives you massive panic/anxiety attacks and increases your depression 3 fold.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

wow i didn't know that. it didn't prevent me from sleeping though. it actually made me sleepy and helped me fall asleep.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd also recommend Sam-E. I think it works better than St John's Wort plus it doesn't interact with the pill.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Not a good idea. St. John's Wort functions as an MAOI. MAOIs are no longer used because they interact poorly with practically everything!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

St Johns wort has so many interactions that I highly recommend that you don't just buy it. Double check if its safe to take for you.

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

yeah, if your on anything prescribed it can shorten it's halflife which can be very bad. Check with a pharm. or your doc.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Also you can't take St Johns wort of you are on antidepressants, antipschycotics, or mood stabilizers.

11 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I use SJW. The best/most potent form is in drops. Quality also matters. Obv. check with Dr., etc., etc.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, hi, nursing student here. If you're taking antidepressants (MAOIs, SSRIs, etc.) already then don't take this. They interact together.
