MRW I catch my roommate trying to put a cast iron skillet in the dishwasher

He has now been educated, so he can no longer perpetrate crimes against cast iron

I have now been educated as well, thanks!

Steel. Wool. It's how I saved a cast iron skillet from the dishwasher, stupid roommate owned one and DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO CARE FOR IT

Lost my shit when I found my cast iron in our metal sink with standing water after a few days and rusted both. Hour or so of tlc fixed that

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Put it in the oven, set oven on auto clean. Walk away, come back, wipe off all crud and rust, condition

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I told my husband that the cast iron is like my bras, he's not allowed to wash them. I'm fussy about it, so I'll do it myself.

Threw mine into a fire pit over the weekend. It hit temps over 700F. Then let it cool to 400, oiled and baked at 500 twice and it’s perfect.

I am amazed by how many of you have roommates willing to do dishes! How is this accomplished???

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

my roommate gave my furniture in the living room away to his friends because "I dont use them much"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man, mine tried to clean the TEFLON pans with steel wool. Fuck, who even uses steel wool anymore?

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Steel wool is actually great for cast iron maintenance.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I won't allow teflon pans in my house. Fucking toxic shit, fuck that.

If you're not willing to travel to the artic yearly, you don't deserve cast iron.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Not sure I get this comment

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love the passion in the comments of people who love these skillets

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

I'm convinced it's nothing more than a placebo. Forced myself to use ours (a gift) for a month, didn't notice any difference.

Homies don't play when it comes to cast iron

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a room mate that washed mine with soap and water because i used it to cook meat and he was a vegetarian

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

and didn't want to taint his food with the flesh of an animal.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

On behalf of vegetarians who aren't total dickheads: that guy is an arsehole.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What the hell veggies was he making in a cast iron? This person seems like a self-important knucklehead

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've had many roommates, and could convince none of them about properly cast iron use. Each one earned the "Don't touch" rule.

8 years ago | Likes 458 Dislikes 3

what kind of monstrous dishwasher you guys have? i gave the pan to my dad before i got a roommate and now he wants to keep the pan

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had a roommate that did that with my inherited cast iron (from my gma) AND my $200 German knife, bout punched her.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

200$ knife? either you brought fancy designer high end cook set or someone fucked with you

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

those WW2 German mess kit are no joke, they are valluable as fucc

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

One time I put up a list of what could and could not safely go in the dishwasher. My roommate took it down.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I accidentally burned 3 years of seasoning off my cast iron last week :(

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My grandmother purposely burned off her seasoning once a year in the fall.Bigleaf fine,

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

all cast iron in,burn till fire out.cool slow and natural. reseason.I've got 75 year old cast iron that looks like new but is slick as glass

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry for your loss :(

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thanks. I've been in mourning, but soon I'll take off the burned seasoning and start over again.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tried that once.my wife looked at me like I had suggested cracking my skull open and having vigorous copulation with it at Sunday mass

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh man, When I was in HS, two friends got married and the first thing she did was put his grandma's cast iron in the dish washer.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So when is the funeral?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

their marriage ended shortly after.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nobody touches my cast iron.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just curious what are the advantages to cast iron?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Amazing cooking surface. Almost non-stick because of the seasoning that is baked onto it, and is an amazing conductor of heat. Best steaks.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's remarkably versatile, and if properly cared for, can last FOREVER

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The cooking advantage: LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY. Slow to change temperature. This allows for cooking a host of things that are a pita to

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4) nah, no also, I'd be beating a dead horse. I love 'em.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

2) cook in aluminum. Aluminum still has its place, and the preheat is far faster. But you can make an amazing pan-fried meat in cast iron

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

3) and it's nearly impossible to pull that off in aluminum b/c the temp of the steak and the blood runoff cools the pan too much. -- Also,

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did he get educated via percussive maintenance using the same skillet he nearly killed?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Beautiful sentence

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i had my friends clean my cast iron while i was away. every pan now needs a complete strip down and reseasoning. rusted every one of them.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad's family is from Oklahoma. I was taught how to properly clean/season cast iron, before I was taught to ride a bike

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Well that's how ya'll got your vittles.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Give me the complete run down of how? So if I cook with oil and seasonings, do I clean or jus re use? How to clean? @op

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're cooking in oil, just wipe it with a paper towel. If things stick, use some salt and a soft rag, then wipe it with some cooking oil

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You can use it like a skillet, or put it in the oven for baking

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope you violently beat your roommate properly.

8 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 9

he said the roommate was educated... are there other ways to educate people than beatings?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Perhaps not in Viking Hobbit culture

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We do have books but we mostly throw them at each other. Hardbacks are popular

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Beat him with the cast iron skillet.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

To season it, obviously

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That seems only right

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

exactly my thought, I really hope so

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In addition to jumper cables?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone educate me, I don't cook so I don't know better

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Me too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Once you cook with cast iron, it's hard to go back to anything else. My two skillets are my favorite in the kitchen.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Spent a month giving ours a chance...but no. Pain in the ass to maintain compared to our conventional stuff, zero noticeable difference.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Detergents strip the oily buildup/seasoning of the pan.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

having said that, it's not the end of the world, it's just a hassle to re-season them, and the really nice coating takes a while to rebuild

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cast iron is great because of polymerized oil stuck to the surface like low-tech non-toxic Teflon. Soap tears that off. Dishwasher more so.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Takes work to rebuild that "patina" after someone runs it thru dishwasher. Clean, oil, heat till smoking, keep heating at 400°F for an hour.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

So does it strip it even when hand washing?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, hand washing isn't harmful, but it's not usually necessary, either. But NEVER let cast iron soak (or air dry).

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hand wash with hot water and coarse salt, or a chain mail scrubber. Dry, rub thin layer of oil on, optionally heat until it smokes a bit.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

How do you guys clean yours? I️ boil and oil, is that standard?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If something got stuck, I use salt and a dry rag as a scrub but usually I can just rinse, pick a little bit, dry it and then oil.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plastic abrasive / sponge combo thingy. Dawn and water. Dry it after rinsing. -- The boil / salt crowd is overcomplicating cast iron, imo.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's wierd. You can't put them in the dishwasher, but they are fine in the microwave.

8 years ago | Likes 189 Dislikes 53

House go BOOM!!!!!!!!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Akshualleee... As long as there are no pointy edges or really thin spots you'll be fine.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe you will. Microwave will stop working when the magic smoke gets loose.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The scariest is gold leaf on china. Looks cool, the smoke and sparks from the plate are impressive.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you know you can charge the new iphone wirelessly in the microwave?

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

That only works if it's IN the cast iron skillet.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just make sure you wrap it up with aluminum foil first.

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 4

If not the iron will escape.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The pot would be fine sure. Kill the microwave though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't do that. Someone might actually believe that.

8 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 10

Shh... just let nature take its place.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

educate the innocent

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It is actually true. I've microwaved 100's of time with cast iron. Don't do aluminum or any other metal. It has something to do with 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

It's because microwave puts a very strong electric field across the things inside. Thin conductors don't actually conduct very well.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is closer to my reaction.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

I once put a roommates' cast iron in the dishwasher because it was in the sink for 5 days and he never did dishes

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

this actually seems fair. i hate the punishment, but the crime deserves it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have seen this GIF for years, what does anybody have the original sauce?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe 5 second films titled "planking"

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oil and throw in the oven at 400 degrees just to be safe!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

dont throw in the oven just put it on stove top

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 6

That gets you pretty uneven heat though. Oven will get an even seasoning

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

dont talk about uneven heat, stove top not only creates even heat it creates fucking darn heat quicker that oven

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Cast iron conducts heat poorly, but holds heat well. It will be much hotter in the ring where the fire touches on stovetop.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You put it on a stove top to dry it, not to season it. Oven + oil is for seasoning, but that isn't necessary every use.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

be careful with CO i almost died from doing that

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i season mine successfully in a stove top

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

CO is a silent killer unless you live in a big house don't try this in a small apartment

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interesting, do you mind explaining? It only takes maybe 10 minutes to dry it on a stovetop using heat. I'm not talking about seasoning.
