Wife and I had this plain 13'x8' wall that need some flair. The solution? Entertainment wall. Pricing on these to buy was around $4000...so I knew I could do it cheaper on my own. Step one, get the trim all off.

The floor was a little unlevel so I built a frame out of 1x2's, 2x2's and shims to level it off.

Used subflooring to reinforce and complete the frame.

With the frame built, I wanted to build a faux wall to allow me to easily run wires behind the wall. Used 2x3's and 2x4' to frame to faux wall. Basically laid them flat and put them into existing studs (fun fact, in the 1950's, houses apparently didn't have a standard on stud positioning).

With the help of my brother in law, we added two bookshelves. These were made using 3/4" 4'x'8 birch planks. Got them at Home Depot and had them do the cuts there given the size of the boards. We had to bribe my niece with the Barbie cartoon to keep her entertained while we worked.

Then began the fun job of running electric to the bookshelves. Talked to an electrician and was told I could run this off of the main TV outlet and would be well within code, so the faux wall cam in handy here for running these wires.

Wires meet in the middle behind the TV and run down into the outlet.

Finished off the electrical and added top and bottom boards to the bookcase.

Both bookcases complete framed. Also added the sheetrock over the faux wall behind the TV.

I wanted to make adjustable shelves and really had no idea how to go about doing this. Fortunately, I found this little guy that made it really simple: https://www.amazon.com/KREG-KMA3200-Shelf-Pin-Drilling/dp/B005FKX6D8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498477294&sr=8-1&keywords=bookshelf+jig. You could easily save $30 if you have a drill press, as this could be easily made. Since I didn't, this $30 solution saved a countless amount of headache.

Will the holes all drilled, I went ahead and pained the faux wall and bookshelves.

With the paint dry, I added my TV mount on to the 2x4's supporting the fake wall to ensure it would hold (used anchor bolts to secure the 2x4's given the stress the TV would put on them). Also added two wall plates to run the wires behind the wall for that clean look.

Now came the fun task of building the middle. Julia Stiles was there to help.

Goal was to add two cabinets on the side and then a middle shelving section.

Cabinets are coming along. As are the shelves for the bookcase. Also, we got a dog in the process who wanted to be part of the mix.

Cabinets are framed out as is the center section of the middle shelf area.

All primed and ready for top coat.

Took a break from the middle section to add the crown molding back on. Tried to salvage the old stuff, but it ended up being a lost cause so I found something similar at Home Depot. Fun fact, cutting crown molding is not fun. Definitely watch YouTube videos.

Added the second shelf to the middle section.

Top coats applied.

My father in law is also a good wood worker and made this lovely pine top for the entertainment stand.

Added the baseboards back on. Was able to use the existing baseboard, which kept a uniform look and cut costs. Also added trim pieces to the table top.

See growing puppy for time elapse.

Finished this off with the floor quarter round and as well as trim on the siding to account for the little gaps I had. Celebrated by watching Bender's Big Score.

Final step will be having some cabinet doors made, but I'll call that phase 2 as it's time to take a break.

All in all, project took 5 months, cost around $900 in wood and paint costs. All main sections were built using 3/4" 4'x8' Birch panels.

Extremely excited to have it done. Now I just feel I need a bigger TV to help fill the space. And I need more stuff to put on the bookshelves.

Also, my woodworking extended beyond the entertainment wall.

So all in all, a busy spring...

FP Edit. Thanks for sticking around. I know some folks are mentioning the TV being off. Just looked at the last image and saw that my sound bar isn't centered, which is definitely causing part of the issue. The TV is also on a fully movable mount and I was messing with it this past weekend. Need to double check to make sure it isn't skewing some other way.

I loved how it all looked.... Until you painted it white. :,(

Congrats on your successful woodworking!

TIL an entertainment wall is an off-center tv with shelves.

+1 for baby

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To be a legit entertainment wall you need to include a liquor cabinet and cigar humidor (okay, maybe that's optional), otherwise great job!

Get some books.

Great job, now use the savings to upgrade your tv. If the wife protests, tell her it's for the kids, because, family, or whatever.

I'm pregnant and see sonogram pictures weekly, but I have no idea what's going on in that picture...

That space needs a way bigger TV. Looks good though

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Should have just gotten a bigger TV.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm showing this to my husband when we buy our house. The other woodworking he has down, thankfully ;)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The TV isn't centered and it is driving me nuts.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The sound bar needs to be moved over (just sitting on the table). Also, the TV is on a full motion mount and may need to move some.

now time to bet a big ass tv in that hole. good work though.

"I'll just throw a dash of ultrasound in there to ensure upvotes"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why do I assume that the wife just said something like "we could use more shelves" and he took that as an invite to build a massive wall

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In my day we used to call this built in bookshelves... oh this crazy world..

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I d this literally this for a living big. You need a bigger TV for that space and 7.1 surround sound. I'm a sales guy and an installer.

Edit: I do*

You forgot to write that you never touched a hammer before in your life.

We can do wonderful things before there are children around.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Tempting downvote for that dreadful cable management, the tv looks off centre too, pretty cool though.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Hmmmm... so this is what an entertainment wall looks like... I was apparently mistaken when I took clues from the 50 shades movie

8 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

Why even watch that shit though?

Masochism

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Watching it was the first mistake

I'm a bit disappointed about the lack of books in the book shelves...

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It seems like every DIY post that includes bookshelves they NEVER have any actual books. Here I am 'artfully piling' all mine 'cuz no space.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Even though prettily sorting your books into a shelf is half the fun. To me, at least. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who has had bookshelves but now has piles, I prefer my piles and I know where everything is

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Artfully piling" lol. Have you considered getting some wooden wine crates from a grocery story and sanding/sealing/painting them? 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 Then mounting on wall as extra shelving. Fun project, just did it recently myself.

Kudos to you good sir, motherfucking KUDOS!

Yo your tv is off center

8 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 3

And too small

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Son of a ... now I can't unsee it

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The camera shot is off center (see the different visible 'widths' of the opposing side walls) giving you the wrong perspective on the TV.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I thought this as well, but we have two different angles and both appear off center.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

better than the entertainment wall... but please don't post it the process

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was really half committed until then.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Although I do think technically the wife should get the credit for doing that wood working

8 years ago | Likes 100 Dislikes 0

Or the dog... no one said anything about a wife

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would have gone with "laying some wood" but this was a more than acceptable post on many levels. Good work, op handyman

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

"penisman"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You do need a MUCH Bigger tv and maybe add a top set of shelves

8 years ago | Likes 388 Dislikes 6

Haha glad I'm not the only one on the bigger TV wagon.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I kept waiting for a bigger TV to appear and it never did.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Both are part of phase 2 as well.

8 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 1

While it's your home, and your project, you could have made the center shelf higher to fit in some tower speakers that would be better 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Than regular bookshelf speakers and fill the room out more. But it looks really good @OP can't wait for the finishing post

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

75inch would probably fit in there. I recommend a sony 75 940E. Dope ass TV. Then get a 5.1 set up to compliment it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buy some cheap LED strips for the back of your TV. It made a huge difference for my TV and felt way more like a cinema

this is dope

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

projectors are magic

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

With that much money you could have bought a projector and a sweet sound system!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A projector wouldn't be good for the way he built the wall though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I meant he should've bought the projector in the first place, then maybe built some cabinets underneath

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Consider a high resolution projector so you can completely fill the space, would just need to patch the holes you made for the tv so far

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Not a fan, they make my eyes hurt

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

My parents got one of those, it's epic!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks great though!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That thought has crossed my mind...trust me. And thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you did that don't buy the super expensive paint they say you need. You can find on Google a "recipe" that any store canmake that'll 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

work just as well and cost around $20 per gallon. 2/2
