“Takin it to the streets”

I do a lot of contract work for a church and they always pay on time.

Some of the shittiest people and some of the nicest people run churches, just like every other organization.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I saw where that was from and immediately had to double check it WASN'T the church I went to as a kid, where I was molested. Similar name.

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 2

Schools and churches seemingly always reneg or refuse total payment

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I deal with about 15 churches on a regular basis - only had one 1 late payment. The rest pay without issue.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I don't mind doing freebies for a church. But that church also has to be legitimate, as in properly doing god's work and helping people.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

And I expect to attend their events before during and after doing that work to confirm for myself that they really are living up to it.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I did some work for World Vision. Some of the most inconsiderate assh0les in my 32 years in the service industry.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Used to be in the advertising biz, best advice I ever got: Politicians and Churches pay before service.

6 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 0

The friends & family rate - charge double, demand payment up front.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Toss lawyers and real estate agents on that list too.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

In 15 years of being a contractor in Oregon the only developer not to pay me was a christian fellow. Asshole

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Don’t do work for churches. Got it!

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 1

Preachers and security guards are the thieves I have to watch out for the most in my job.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sounds like an interesting double jeopardy. What is it you do if I may ask?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'd take them to court. Fuck those people, you think they would see the value in work considering Jesus was a carpenter. Pretty sure his

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Work wasn't free either rofl.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Can you take a church to civil court for breach of contract?

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes, but people will say you’re an asshole for suing a church. So a lot of contractors don’t bother.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

And they may lose their status as tax exempt....https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.spa.com/news/nc-church-sign-trying-2-impeach-jesus-too/amp/

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I may get into the NBA. Unlikely, though

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Not sure why the downvotes, there isn't a chance in hell this changes in foreseeable future

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Don’t trust Pastor Tommy; Pastor Tommy is AssHoe!!!

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

In my community a Southern Baptist church contracted with a guy to replace the church's roof. A huge roof, with lot's of complicated angles.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Job gets done, church refuses to pay, say's it's a "donation". Small claims court did nothing, so the guys crew show up next day and

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

starts peeling off the roof. Cops got called, news reporters were mysteriously already on hand, shit hits the fan. Church pays bill.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Fuck you. Pay me!!!

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So people will pull this crap at the expense of the Amish/mennonites because they know they won't take them to court.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The Amish are their own form of terrible. Seriously some shady fuckers and more ruthless businessmen than some Italian mobs. Fuck the Amish

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Stories Please!!!!!!!

If you're doing business with a religious son of a bitch, get it in writing;

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

Even then, they be wanting free changes/adds.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

his word isn't worth shit, not with the good Lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal. - Uncle Bill

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Don't trust anyone that thinks God talks to them.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I’m amazed at some of the comments saying they never got paid by churches. That’s crazy! Not surprised either.

6 years ago | Likes 57 Dislikes 3

Religious right knows that people are reluctant to take them to court. See also: lack of lawsuits against logo IP theft for religious use

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're amazed, and think it's crazy. But you're not surprised. ?

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

It was a roller coaster of a ride!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Has anyone ever heard of the mormons pulling this? Shouldn't happen. LDS church makes a point of paying ahead, or having money ready ahead

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

LDS hires LDS. If you were LDS you would know if they paid.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Used to be Mormon with a step-dad who was a general contractor. Can confirm.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

LDS often hires LDS contractors. They keep business insular where possible. Common complaint in SLC about them.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Used to be Mormon with a step-dad who was a general contractor. Can confirm.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Christian here. I’m sorry to anyone and everyone who has been short-changed by people who claim to be Christian.

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 3

Thanks for the sentiment but I will still never trust anyone declaring their piety as far as I can spit.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I second this. I'm actually super shocked... my fairly conservative new England church would NEVER not pay a contractor.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It really is true what you say. There are storefront churches and then there is old money established institutions that will still be around

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, the "No true Scotsman" fallacy…

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I'd argue that it doesn't count since the #1 rule is show love and kindness. Screwing people that did work for you isn't following it >>

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's like me saying I'm a golfer despite never setting foot on a golf course. I can't claim to be something if I don't meet criteria #1.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

A Scotsman isn't a Scotsman if he's not Scottish. A Christian isn't a Christian if there's no Christ in their actions towards the world.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd say the #1 rule is "obey god, and his appointed representatives".

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The great commandment says nothing of obey. It says love the lord your god and the second is love you neighbor. So criteria #1 is love

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Mark" came much later than the OT. His criteria would be around #700, no matter how he aggrandized his own writing.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Once got crashed into by a pastor. He refused to pay for my car claiming he had no income and tried to make me feel bad he was injured.

6 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 2

what happened after?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Was this in the US? If so, don't most states require you be insured to drive?

6 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Not the US. Only personal injury is compulsory here.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Excellent point

6 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

After a bit of searching, all 50 states require some proof of financial liability or insurance. The pastor may have committed a crime.

Tough crowd.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, now I know.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah that was the joke

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But I tweeked it. I TWEEKED IT!!!!!!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why?

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

His father was a Steeler and his father before him. I guess it's a family thing

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because he touches himself at night.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So do I, but I still pay my bills.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

While he preys his bills away.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's a lot cheaper being athiest/agnostic

6 years ago | Likes 231 Dislikes 19

10% off everything

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mean, my lack of religion doesn't automatically stop me from not paying people for their work.

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Nor does it keep you from being entitled- but American christians are typically the most entitles bunch you'll ever meet.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

I suppose it's easy to let the idea of eternal salvation go to your head, yeah.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They ARE the only ones getting it.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Yeah that's not a thing.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It’s also a lot more boring. I so wanna believe in magic and miracles and magic dudes in the sky with a plan. Alas..

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 8

I can just read/watch Lord of the Rings for that. And it's entertaining

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I don’t understand the downvoting. I’m just saying that I envy religious people and their faith. *shrug*

There is. The pursuit of knowledge and understanding. It makes you see that the world is so much bigger and more beautiful that you knew.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't know if envy is the word I'm looking for there, but I can understand I suppose, it comforts those types to believe in that stuff.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It’s called “faith”.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Solipsism is more fun, you become the dude in the sky.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I might look into that. I’d make a good sky dude, I think.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

I can see that.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Boring? The atheists get to play with the whole universe.

Kannapolis, NC for the record.

6 years ago | Likes 228 Dislikes 4

Thank you, I just realised the 704 area code!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My grandmother lived there. Not shocked!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Literally 10 hrs from me.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We refer to it as Kracknapolis, a shithole shutdown mill town, with a bunch of lowlifes living in it.

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

As a lowlife, don’t bring me into this!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I am from there and never heard it called this. Also I am not a suuuuper lowlife. So get your facts straight!

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

There is maybe 2 nice parts of Kannapolis, but as an avid mover and poor person, it gets real sketchy. Meth lab explosion, drug dealers,(1)

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pimps, pill heads, and one Smeagol druggy/dealer. All neighbors I've had in K-town.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not everyone is a crackhead there, there's a bunch of meth heads too.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1 Tim 5:18 “For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages.’ ”

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 1

But that would mean, you know, actually practicing your faith.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thankfully, I know a lot who do. I’m growing.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jesus walked everywhere

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck that’s a good response

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

God himself let this guy borrow his car, and he's trying to skimp out and get the stuff done for free? Wouldn't spring for the premium stuff

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could at least do it tax free.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of the 2 tv ones that were trying to justify why they needed there private jets.

Tell him Jesus had a Honda and he was a better person for not talking about it.

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Spoke not of his own accord.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

funny side note: a honda is the only car mentioned in the bible.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Acts 2:1 "and when the day of pentecost was fully come, they were all with one Accord in one place."

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I drive an Accord!!!! AND I like ducks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 Thessalonians 3:10 "If anyone doesn't want to work, he shouldn't eat." Then again, many "religions" omit books from their bibles.

6 years ago | Likes 214 Dislikes 2

Cherrypicking is the official sport of the great religions, after all :)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 Tim 5:18 “For the Scripture says, ‘You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, ‘The laborer is worthy of his wages.’ ”

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Omitted based on which list though? There are some common canons, but the list itself isn't specified by the Bible, only by men.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

I mean, "The Bible" was essentially determined by Catholics in 382 at the Council of Rome. And nowhere in the Bible does it say Bible alone

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

It was determined at the council of nicea actually

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But you can be damned sure they won't omit the books that allow them to treat other people like trash.

6 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 4

I feel like lots of people don’t base their actions on the texts because they simply don’t read any of it

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I don't disagree, but this is the reason which I'm so hostile towards religion. (1)

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

I'm gay and these fucks can certainly remember Levicticus but their religion is suddenly irrelevant when they are the abomination (2)

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I’ve done work for only one church and one charity. I won’t take either as clients again. Both suck and don’t pay.

take them to court. Being a church doesn't allow them to steal.

6 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 3

Not worth it. Not even worth my time in small claims. Just wrote it off.

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 2

I’m a big fan of going back and reclaiming your property. Be it drywall, wiring, insulation, concrete etc...

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Both customers were for IT work. Can’t reclaim services. I see it merely as paying for a lesson. This was years ago so no loss at this point

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well that’s too bad. Sorry you had to deal with that. Hope it doesn’t happen again/often.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What type of work do you do?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The business in question is an IT managed services provider. I own 3 businesses and adjunct at 2 schools.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Grouping all entities into one sucky group is not cool. Collect a down payment and issue a contract for legit work. Sue if they dont pay.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 24

From what I understand if you do sue they'll just put a lien on the property. That doesn't really help much anytime soon.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not worth my time. Better to segregate by types of businesses I prefer not to work with. I don’t take on law firms anymore for that reason.

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

Yeah, no lawyers either

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If they don't want to be judged by a stereotype, stop being stereotypical

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 7

I bet you say that to all the minorities...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That doesn’t follow. E.g without knowing anything about me nor me doing anything to wrong you, if I said I’m Christian, how would you judge?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I'd assume you honestly believe there is nothing you can do that you can't be forgiven for.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Ah, this is why assuming is no good. I honestly believe there’s nothing that I’m sorry and repentant for that I can’t be forgiven,

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And that’s how I need to treat others.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have done work for 8 to 10 churches over the years. Half of them never paid. The non pay rate for your average joe is less than 1%

6 years ago | Likes 1537 Dislikes 16

From what I've seen they usually pay. But they always try to get extra stuff for free. Or get discounts on work already agreed upon.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Happened once, put a lien on the property and they quickly paid.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Guilt them with the whole “Jesus was a carpenter” thing...

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Work in finance, can confirm - churches don't pay.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

Are we surprised though? Really... are we... cuz i aint

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Will not work for churches. I bid jobs and then they ask what contributions I'll be making. No fuck that.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

"10% of the labor; you're a 503c charitable organization, right?"

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Explains why so many pastors support Trump

6 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 18

They're pro birth and it matters more to them than anything else.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Had a friend who rewired a buisness, they completely refused to pay, cut off contact/etc. So he went to 'fix' something, undid his work-

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

-rewired it like how it was, & when they went to him to complain he said exactly what they did. "We have no records of being contracted by-

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

-you, if you wish to sign a contract for PAID work, please call us during buisness hours"

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Btw they had signed a contract before he did his work, but then when it was time to pay said they never signed anything & never saw him b4.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I have and still do work for multiple churches and not once have I been stiffed! Granted They are established congregations.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

But the exposure!

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

I can pay my rent with it! Such a versatile currency!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I mean, pictures of the giant sign getting posted on the internet is exposure. The pastor probably didn't expect to be included.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Many churches tried to demand free printing services when I worked at Staples, and even got angry when we said no. Talk about entitlement...

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

People pay you just to threaten them with eternal damnation every week and you think everyone owes you free shit now? Provide a real service

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Probably restored 30+ churches over the past 10yr and every single one has paid me. Obviously people get stiffed..sucks when it happens to u

6 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

you almost certainly live in a different part of the world than those whose churches don't pay

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Obviously. I guess Ohio is special?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Note this pic is from NC. Southern Baptist churches are the worst.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just want to clarify that I'm not saying all churches are perfect or that some have not paid for work done. I'm well aware this does happn

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

“church folk” or those that state they are working for a church are the most horrible, in friendly people I’ve ever dealt with. Not all...

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

but most.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The first thing every church I’ve ever worked for has asked me is, “can you donate your time?” Aka, can you work for free.

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

They're being up front about their intentions, and it sounds like you're free to say no. They're covering materials and permits? And you..

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

..can write off the cost of the job as a donation. Very different than lying then stiffing the gc.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes, I agree. Just pointing it out.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Can you donate bill money?"

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why I didn't do business with church's, "we can pay in 90 days for work done now, trust us we are good christians"

6 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

The instant a client goes on about being a "good christian" is the instant I seriously look at dumping them. It pretty much never ends well.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

That's what the pastor's daughter always said in college and then she'd steal money from everyone in the lounge lol

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It sounds bad but the drywallers I know, if you don't pay em, they still own the work and will rip it right back out, I agree with it?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

File a mechanics lien.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I’ve got quite a few churches that don’t put rent and have been sent to collections...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yep. They want more more more. Free free free

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

A church an acquaintance mine goes to had a carpenter from another parish offer to redo their flooring and then just stopped half way. 1/

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Apparently, the goal was more to guide people from my acquaintance's parish to his own, since not long after the carpenter's priest offered2/

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

his own church as a substitute.About half go there now, the other half meet in the original church's hall for mass instead. 3/3

Do only half meet in the original because they only have half the floor? Is the rest void?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nah half meet in the other Parish's church, the other half meet in the hall. But yeah their church itself has no floor now.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is so outstandingly devious and against the teachings of Jesus. Even this atheist can't see how a preacher justified that to himself.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Also, apparently the guy in charge of my acquaintance's church's funds owns the contracting company that keeps finding things to do w/

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

their church hall. So it's like a double whammy. 2/2

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That really does seem about right.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

But... But you'll get your reward in heaven /s

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Guess either get it in writing or don't work for churches

6 years ago | Likes 492 Dislikes 4

Get payment up front or at least an EMD. Some will agree to pay x$ on "faith" that "God will provide" then they stiff you because

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

God didn't miraculously quintuple their church size. Like an idiot wanting a mortgage saying "I'm good for it, I might win the lottery!"

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I always did. Still do.

6 years ago | Likes 247 Dislikes 5

Do they invoke the "you're doing the Lord's work" BS?

6 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

So does an "act of god" fire.

6 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

So did they end up paying?

6 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 3

Only half of them

6 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

Ever had any issue doing work with catholic churchs!

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

But most have to admit that I always only charged what it’s costing me to do the work!

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I've never done any work for one that I can recall. I'm a surveyor. They don't sell their property too often.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm a tailor and they only pay when boys pants are half off.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

File a complaint with the police and take them to court

6 years ago | Likes 224 Dislikes 3

“I’m gonna be a preacher so I don’t have to work” https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cEWiJR9qeoc

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sad thing is it's often easy for churches to find Pro Bono lawyers and it's financially and emotionally taxing to fight these battles.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Part of me thinks, grab a reciprocating saw and repo the work.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have an enforceable contract. Still takes time and money. I try and exhaust all means of collecting before I do that. Not always worth it.

6 years ago | Likes 122 Dislikes 3

Don't they have to pay you for lost wages while suing?

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Can you just go to the church and uninstall your stuff?

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

does it take money though? cant you include legal fees and a modest interest amount? like "church owes me $5k, from a job 6months ago.¹

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

²im sueing for $5k + 5%($125) and any legal costs" if a lawyer costs $2k, church pays you $7,125...

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Sadly bad payers will always find ways to avoid paying! Like if you knew you couldn’t pay why didn’t you told me right at the beginning?

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

because they clearly want the work done

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Is there some sort of non-payment clause you can put in?

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yes but it still takes significant time and money to enforce those clauses that are already in the contractss Chasing dead rats is expensive

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Contractors can put a “builder’s lein” on a house or building and it appears as a debt against the property. Has to be cleared for 1/2

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

a loan or a sale to go through. That takes courts answer lawyers and time.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

How much are court fees. I'll donate a dollar just for the principle of it.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Thanks buddy. I'll cover it though. Go give that buck to a homeless person or tip a waiter better.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Just the tip?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why we stopped taking brown clients (middle Eastern/Indian) when I did landscaping. They were brutal to deal with.

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 6

Haha. I've heard this from others, as well.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I had a slow payer like that. I always got my money but it might take 10 months.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Hmm name might be ironic...

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol just got a warning for my comment. Good old double standards.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The jesus fish conspiracy. If they have a jesus fish, you're getting screwed

6 years ago | Likes 74 Dislikes 8

LOL The crappy, NC based Hamilton drywall products had the Jesus fish but apparently they got rid of it recently.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I learned that long ago. The more they announced their Christianity, the less Christian they are.

6 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 0

yep. to most Americans, being "Christian" is about projecting an "I'm better than you" image

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Go listen to William S Burroughs "words of advice for young people". He said it best.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Been a handyman for the past 30 years. Cannot count the jobs I have gotten to complete “Christian” contractors unfinished/shoddy work.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Wait are we still talking about working on churches or are you now talking about contractors who are Christian

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Most specifically, I was referring to arfysdad’s observation that the more someone feels they have to announce their Christianity, the less

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ack!!! As a pastor: This is horrible! Red tape and slow decisions are often typical but not paying is stealing.

6 years ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 2

my moms church recently just got rid of a pastor for stealing stuff from the church and selling it to pad his own pockets..

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

This stuff just kills me. I know pastors are only human but this kind of thing does so much damage.

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Corrupt people are drawn to positions of power. You will find a higher than the average of them there.

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Sad thing is it’s supposed to be about service. But yes there are churches & relig orgs that run on power/politics. unchecked it’s a mess

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeha my dad is a pastor and his biggest nightmare was dealing with the Deacons meetings. He never did anything like this tho

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

Yes, there are lots of people who have to get on board to keep things rolling - and everyone has their opinion!!

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hmm, sounds like something a Stephanie would say..

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Exactly the same for my dad

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have to admit I let the other pastor take those meetings. So much stress and emotional energy for me.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In many churches it is the worst part for the pastors

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yet you're perfectly ok with being a con artist.

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 36

Nice assumptions with no basis you have here. Aside from some mega church billionaires the majority of pastors and preachers do their jobs/

6 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

/out of love for the community around them. Unless you have a huge congregation of wealthy folks it doesn't pay very much money wise.

6 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

I’m very sure the hospitalized 81 yo and dying 89 yo I visited today were thankful for the prayers in the tradition of their life long faith

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Even as an atheist, I recognize that most non-mega churches do a lot of good in their communities and improve their members quality of life.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

As an idea, if you still do want to work for them, ask them for prepayment (or escrow) before the work starts, and explain why.

6 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

I never ask for the money upfront. I consider myself a professional and I have always thought that wasn't necessary. Most times I'm right.

6 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

I've worked with large contractors who require a substantial up front (5-20%) for mobilization and materials. These are 7-8 figure jobs.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lawyers have retainer fees...paid up front.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True. Their clients sometimes end up in jail. As a surveyor that isn't common with me.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Same here. Mostly right. I try to take the attitude that if I’m doing it with the right heart, they’ll pay to someone higher than me.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to be a pro too, mostly new commercial with a bit of residential reno. The contracts always had a small (10%) down payment followed

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

clear stages of work, with payment for each stage being required before the next stage can begin. Each stage billed for slightly more than

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what was due at the end of the stage (10% IIRC) and all that extra came due at completion. This protects both builder and customer.
