1970 VW Beetle autostick, bought at only $500

Sunday, Sept 25th. The morning I went to help load him

Hasn't been registered since 89 is what I was told, and what the plates back up. Sitting in this barn for 10 years, used as a parts car many times, and now it's mine.

$500 for the car, $200 for the engine which needs rebuilt as it leaks oil (which they all do but apparently it's worse than standard leakage) and $150 for a disc brake drop axle.

The owner was more than wonderful, and has also given me a box full of various missing parts, engine stuff, and soon some trim, mirrors and antennae hopefully.

Sunday, Sept 25th, 2016.

Just got home from work and was so happy to see him there, finally, after about 6 weeks of paying for it since I only work weekends. Excited to get working the next day!

Don't mind the muffin wrapper. Lots of stuff put back together, including found the wipers and the old blades.

Found and got the new passenger side door handle installed so the key fits it. Too bad it's still hard to open/lock/unlock. Probably a problem with the door itself.

Monday, Sept 26th. Already got cleaning like crazy.

The interior (doors, seats, headliner, windows) all cleaned up. Also cleaned the driver's side of the car and the hood.

Tuesday, Sept 27th Replaced the driver's front hubcap and polished each of them.

Used cola + aluminum foil to remove rust on the others, which weren't in dire need of replacing like this one was. Then used wax to make sure they shine, and the rust doesn't come back before it gets running.

I did a lot of other stuff that day, mostly getting the interior ready to be vacuumed and cleaning the other pieces of trim, but spending time shining chrome was so nice.

Wednesday, Sept 28th. Front interior basically done.

Of course I need to clean the seats and dash a bit better too. Also my passenger's side running board trim broke off! Clips were rusted and only one bent one was holding it the whole time.

Ain't nothin' in here!

Got the engine now, but it's trapped in a garage full of spiders, so work on it hasn't begun yet (and hence no pics)

Messy!

The trunk.. hood... you know what I mean, was also incredibly hard to open as the release lever is in the glovebox, which wasn't secured. You can see the radio dangling there.

Thursday, Sept 29th. Difference on the roof, thank you Blast AP cleaner. Also thank you work for lending me the cleaning supply.

Not an advertiser, but I swear on that stuff that it'll clean damn near anything.

My favourite photo of Oliver

I'm very much hoping the owner still has the second plate.

First read it was vw beetle autistic.... then read it again, and oh nevermind.....

@OP, if the engine turns over and has good compression, just replace the main seals and retread the banjo bolts, those are the typical leaks

There's a good chance someone may have been conceived in that groovy vehicle.

Herbie is in bad shape. Fix him!

Will you be getting it re-registered?

As soon as it's working, of course. I own the Lincoln in the background, but I'm thinking this is going to be my first car I drive.

Go after it, man. Great little cars to ride in, and not too expensive depending on the condition.

I've driven past one for years & in all that time it's never moved. I'm so tempted to track down the owner or discover their rotting corpse.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do it! If you want to buy it I'm sure they'd give a decent price on it even, depending on the condition.

@OP with it sitting so long draining the old gas out probably isn't possible. New gas tanks are cheap though, also replace all brake lines

Pretty much anything mechanical will be replaced or updated - though surprisingly I haven't seen any mouse droppings or chewed wires yet.

This is mine. I just got it a couple months ago. http://imgur.com/haSBf

They don't leak. They mark their territory.

Confusing VW's with Land Rovers :)

As a beetle owner this is what we tell each other. I am personally unaware of any other car owners that say that.

Literally nobody would confuse a fine German motorcar, with an English made sack of shit.

Please tell me you named it Herbie

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Still deciding a name, I was thinking Oliver.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yas! Like from top gear?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Exactly!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was actually going to comment that you should name it Herbie or Oliver, but I didn't think the reference would fly. You're a cool dude!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks! The only reason I didn't want t name it Herbie was it's the wrong colour and year, to be honest.
