I don't understand -- a NJ resident

(laughs in EV)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I've been to portland once and can confirm. (From ireland)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We don’t pump our own gas like peasants in Oregon. We have standards

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Yeah. I have been to Oregon numerous times in my life. It is always weird and I end up having to apologize profusely for my ignorance.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or, as what happened to me Sunday, we all pumped our own gas because apparently the attendants didn't come in?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

v When I try to pump the gas myself & I stand there watching:

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Me to my Oregon friend: did you struggle when you came here- did you almost die pumping your own gas?

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

"YES! I was so self conscious"

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've lived here so long it's weird if I don't have someone to pump gas for me ??‍♀️

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Me too! Unless I'm in my work truck, then it's ok for me to pump my own gas?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What caught me off guard in OR is that there are no signs that say self or full service. I always expect self if there's no sign.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Alright, you have the one legitimate complaint in this whole thread lol. It can be confusing, especially if the pump attendant is slacking

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

More states should do it. It's great.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Us Oregonians like to sit in our cars in gas stations when we are in other states.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

Id like a world where petty laws are seen as burdensome and to be avoided; any society without said law should be evidence enough to repeal

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Does the rest of the US function just fine without this government burden? Then the law is anti-liberty and should be stricken off the books

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Against prostitution? Look at Australia. Still think drugs are bad? Look at Portugal, they doin just fine. Free yourself from nanny statism

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been to New Jersey and it was still a surprise

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I live in Oregon and mainly drive my work truck which I'm allowed to fuel myself because it's diesel. I hate this exact encounter so much.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bruhh this was meee!! I was so fucking lost and I thought I was about to get jack.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Grew up in Oregon, live in Jersey, so true for out of staters. My mother-in-law here has never pumped gas in her life.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about if you're on a motorcycle? do you have to get off while they pump or do they pump while you sit on it?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

depends on the place. if the pumps are coded, we set it up and hand you the nozzle. If not, you just do it yourself.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wouldn’t let anyone else put petrol into my motorbike. It’s not the same as a car.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Driving through NJ I had the exact same reaction

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember getting yelled at when I lived there for this. I didn't know. I even got my license there & no one told me it was state law. Oops

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was in Vancouver last month, just realized we only got gas on the WA side, never in Portland.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

On a trip south, before could afford sat nav & cell phones, we said we knew we hit Oregon when they pumped the gas for us.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yessssssss!!!!! 1st time there and I got spooked by that and then I thought..."do I tip?"

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i rode my motorcycle from CA and pulled in for gas, and it was just like this

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I remember the first time that happened to me. They had really high unemployment so they made it mandatory that someone had to pump yourgas

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is this like in New Jersey?

4 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 0

We have Wawa so everyone else can SUCK IT

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can't pump your own gas in OR. Crazy shit.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yes, can confirm. And in winter and hot humid days it is GLORIOUS! And contrary to myth it does not cost more. I asked got 1 word: insurance

4 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

I mostly find it irritating when I go to one and its closed.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its super annoying when they are understaffed. Sit here waiting to do something I can do myself...

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

NJ has some of the cheapest gas in the country

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Oregon usually does too

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Used to. Gas tax has been jacked a few times since the Christie administration. Now it's about on par with NY.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've moved since the Christie admin just back to visit so color me wrong

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Unless you have a super nice car or scream about the tank paint on your motorcycle.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ya fuck if I'm letting anyone else fill up my bike, sounds like a good way to fuck up something

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I don’t even own a motorcycle and that’s a hard no from me.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’ve always wondered about that. My bike is old but I still wouldn’t want someone scratching the tank with the pump nozzle.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also helps to make them uncomfortable with porn dialog. Big hose, need extra hands to guide it in, make it all squirt inside the hole…

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

motorcycles are an exception, less for the scratching and more so we aren't liable if gas gets on the paint.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm an Oregonian and I hate having to wait for an attendant, but it's technically illegal to do it yourself.

4 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 4

Used to live in OR and I always liked it. It's faster and I don't have to do anything.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

The attendant yelled at me and treated me like a moron when I couldn't figure out the gas pump myself. I'm just not from around here :(

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What the fuck Oregon. They don't trust you to pump your own gas?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I mean, I personally don't trust most people to make breakfast without hurting themselves or others.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Unless diesel, according to one attendant I recently spake with.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Yeah, they don't want to be held liable for putting the wrong stuff in your tank.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

go to better gas stations?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

The part about this I hate is that has stations close at night. Good luck finding gas at 2am.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Literally never had this problem. I do alot of night driving in Oregon and have never once had any problems finding a gas station

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It speeds up the process at big gas stations like Costco. Been to other states where people move at there own pace.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh no. Oh no no no. The costco guys have a line 100% of the time. Since they get no "lull break" they move much more casually to not be 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

exhausted, as they should. But it makes it so slow its almost not worth the $.05 price difference.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why is it illegal when it isn't in pretty much the rest of the world?

4 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Technically safety. One of the reasons cited in the law is rain makes people slip. Very dangerous. Very dumb. 70 year old law, so its senile

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Gas spills, dipshits using stupid containers for gas. It’s about 20-30 million a year in property damage as a whole.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

20/30m for the whole us? whats that like 0.000000001% of gas sales?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suspect the annual cost for attendants is significantly higher, though. Pretty stupid law.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oregon is a weird place. Not in a bad way, just different.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

They do pride themselves in being weird. Or was that just Portland?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

While Portland tries to claim the title, the rest of Oregon does a decent job at it as well. I'm looking at you Salem.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They get super angry at you .

4 years ago | Likes 166 Dislikes 2

I rode through a couple years back on a motorcycle. A couple places let me fill it myself. Some places flat out refused. Interesting exp!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm confused, what's happening?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Oregon requires (or until recently required) that gas stations have attendants to handle the fuel transfer, not allowing customers to »

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

use the pumps in whatever stupid and unsafe way they wanted, like using them to fill plastic bags.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was so confused because I was trying to answer a fairly-urgent text that I didn't answer while driving, while figuring out the pump, when/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

this pushy man in an orange vest walks up. I thought he was a panhandler so I just said "later I'm busy!" but he wouldn't go away...

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can confirm.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Funny, I never got angry, it was always the customer throwing tantrums like a toddler because "I can do myself!"

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We had one douche from California literally speed off in his convertible shouting "You'll be hearing from my lawyer"

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

v

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought they passed a law allowing self serve recently?

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

They did in certain areas. I still remember day one had a gas station fire(explosion?)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I believe the governor issued people could pump their own gas when there was lockdown. But now it’s back to normal

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

That's what I was thinking of. Thanks!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In remote areas. In cities, you still have to wait for someone.

4 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 1

You can pump your own diesel, but gas has to be done by an attendant

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Specifically, counties with less than 40k residents

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What's the logic behind not letting people pump their own gas?

4 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

It's the other way around, there isn't a compelling reason to not have pump attendants in most cases. The other cases have exceptions

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 9

Have you met a lot of humans?

4 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 3

By that logic people shouldn't be allowed to drive either. Oregon should have mandatory self driving cars then.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And since teslas rammed police cars for a while there, probably just go back to horse and buggies ;)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As an Oregonian, I dont trust a lot of Oregonians to pump gas

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reduces unemployment

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oil companies pay more people and therefore more taxes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And the tax dodging oil company can claim to be "job creators".

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought most gas stations were franchises/independent from oil companies?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jerbs

4 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Mao would be proud

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This is the real reason, but the fact that we let 16 year olds dispense a highly explosive substance is kind of crazy.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

Well except that 16 year olds & younger can safely pump gas in 48 other states, it’s really not that dangerous for a semi-grown human.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Resuce spills, attempts at overriding safety devices, other stupid shit people do, provides low skill jobs

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Lol autocorrect rescue vs reduce

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trash bags full of gas in trunks, using a Rubbermaid 55gal bin as a gas can, smoking at the pump, pouring it all over the ground, etc.

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 6

Actually, it’s a jobs program.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

In the places where people pump their own gas, I really don't think most of these are common except the cigarette one. People suck.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes but, how many injuries or even deaths actually happen because of this?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Every sperm is sacred, every sperm is great. If a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

About 2 people a year, and about $20 million a year in property damage.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

They get fined $500 if someone reports it. I'd be angry too

4 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 2

This has to be incorrect because i pump my own gas in Oregon all the time

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Are you in eastern or southern Oregon?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Neither. Portland area

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like East Clackamas area? I’m shocked because I live in metro and I don’t know where I can do that (I am in a car w/ gas).

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Reports what?

4 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

It.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

If a regular person pumps their own gas instead of a highly qualified individual to do a simple task done by regular people in 48 states

4 years ago | Likes 77 Dislikes 2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

And everywhere outside of the States too.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

in their defense we do have people in the other 48 like the lady filling plastic grocery bags in her trunk

4 years ago | Likes 55 Dislikes 1

you didnt get plastic bags and other random shit filled in oregon. work in any customer facing job and you will rapidly learn how stupid>

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the general public is. and be very thankful for our attendants.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In Oregon if a customer pumps their own gas, the fire marshal can fine the gas station $500.

4 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Thank you for putting this into context cause I had no clue what was up with Oregon

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But somehow I am allowed to pump my own gas at pacific pride, or rural stations.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In 2015, Oregon did change the law in some rural areas with less than 40k people to allow people to pump their own gas.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think by the second frame, the New Jersey station attendant has already pick-pocketed you for pork roll sandwich money.

4 years ago | Likes 460 Dislikes 2

Stolen your wallet, taken all the money, and eaten it, probably.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Wawa

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He wouldn’t have done that if you had actually tipped the customary pork roll+egg+cheese. I swear people be so rude sometimes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of the Ween song ‘Pumpin for the Man’ about New Hope PA.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I wish I could upvote this more than once

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pork roll egg & cheese on a kaiser bun.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

YES!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you please.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Salt pepper ketchup

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's taylor ham!

4 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 13

John Taylor's Pork Roll. ?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Grew up in Bergen county. Converted to team pork roll when I learned "Taylor ham" was just a brand name after moving to central jersey.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

^this

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Taylor ham is a brand. It's a pork roll

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 4

Dude. Taylor is the brand. It literally says right on it TAYLOR PORK ROLL. It's never called Taylor Ham

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The only brand

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

Case's in Trenton would like to have a word with you.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I’m willing to hear them out and try a free sandwich in the name of diplomacy and fair dealing.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It fucking pork roll

4 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 4

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

It's either or. I'm from central NJ.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There is no central nj, only people who dont want to say they live in the north! Dividing line is trenton. Hahaha

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

JON STEWART SAYS CENTRAL NJ EXISTS, SO IT EXISTS.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*scrapple people asking if there are leftovers to make more scrapple*

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Probably the best reply to this

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mmmmmmm scrapple

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never heard of it, looked it up and it doesn't sound half bad. But then again, I am a fatty.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live in PA. I felt this and laughed too hard. Pump your own gas you lazy sacks.

4 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 10

Have you ever met anyone from New Jersey? We are far too dumb to be trusted with explosive materials.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's not a joke, by the way.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Used to live there and visited years later. Went to pump my own gas as per usual and the attendant came out screaming like I kicked a puppy.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I see a lot of PA plates getting gas in NJ.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We pump fists, not gas

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Glad I don’t have to when it’s freezing out. Also, less drive offs.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

That how we keep people from leaving. NJ. They don’t know how to use a gas pump.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You’re also held ransom at most bridges, you have to pay to leave NJ

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Idk bout NJ, but the argument in OR was it creates jobs and lessens the likelihood of folks doing dumb stuff with gas.

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

as a former employee of a gas station, jesus christ, the second one. you know where people weren't filling bags with gasoline? Oregon.

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

NJ was also gasoline idiot free *until they got home that is*

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

One time not too long ago, wawa in SJ like 15 min from Philly had ZERO attendants at the pumps. Middle of the day, every pump occupied. So

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

everyone was pumping their own gas and giving nervous glances for police or angry attendants or something. ‘Twas a grand old time.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Jersey gas is usually cheaper that PA, so Ill stay being lazy

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

It used to be cheaper than NY, now it's more expensive, but it's lovely not having to get out of your car in winter.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

FTFY…Cheaper than NYC?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Ah true, NJ gas is now more expensive than the Hudson Valley though.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
