1. Karl Denke The Cannibal

Karl Denke worked as an organ player at the local church and was well-liked in his community. He was most well known for the assistance he gave beggars, vagrants and weary travelers and was such an outstanding citizen he was known as Papa Denke. He was also a ritualistic cannibal who killed approximately forty people, pickled their flesh and sold it as pork at the local market.

In December 1924, a coachman heard cries for help which seemed to come from Denke's flat. He rushed to help... and found a young man staggering along the corridor, blood streaming from his open scalp. Before he fell unconscious on the floor, he blurted out that "Papa" Denke had attacked him with an axe. Later, covered in blood he ran into the local police station and told the officers that it was Karl Denke, who tried to kill him with a pickaxe. Not Papa Denke! That's impossible! The policemen could not believe the vagabond since Karl Denke was the beloved Papa everyone knew and loved. However a doctor confirmed that he must have been attacked so they had to follow protocol and arrest Denke. Denke committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell with a handkerchief in 1924.

On Christmas Eve, after turning over the corpse to Denkes relatives, the police went to his apartment to secure the property of the suicide victim. Not really expecting anything exciting from the exemplary citizen, they almost had a heart attack by what they saw next. They found several containers filled with pickled human flesh, an apparatus for making soap, and human bones prepared for processing. On the walls were hanging dozens of belts, suspenders, and shoelaces made from human skin. The closet was filled with blood stained clothing and on the table were various documents and receipts with the names of people that had been released from prisons and hospitals. There is an entire official list of body parts and pieces that were found, but one of the weirdest things was his dental collection with 351 teeth that he kept in money bags and Salt and Pepper tins. Testing of the pickled flesh performed confirmed that it was indeed human. Ultimately, the police were able to identify 20 victims of the cannibal. It is believed, however, that Karl Denke killed, cut up, pickled, and processed more than 40 people.

2. H.H Holmes

H.H Holmes was the alias of one of Americas first serial killers. He bought an enormous Chicago pharmacy and turned it into an elaborate maze of death traps in 1893. Also known as the Beast of Chicago, he began his life of crime with frauds and scams. As a medical student he would steal corpses and make false insurance claims. When he moved to Chicago in 1886, the owner of the pharmacy mysteriously disappeared and he built an elaborate house of horrors known as the Murder Castle above the pharmacy with small torture rooms. He had sound proof gas chambers, rooms where he would hang people, bank vaults where he could suffocate victims, and brick rooms where he would leave people for days to die of hunger and thirst. Once he had killed his victim he would send the body down to the basement in an elevator to either burn or dissect it and sell the skeleton to medical schools.

During the 1893 World Fair, Holmes opened up his house as a hotel for tourists. Some of his guests did not survive although no one knows the total number who disappeared. Many of them were women that he seduced or promised a job. He continued to do insurance scams on the side but was betrayed by one of his buddies that he refused to pay. Holmes killed him and 3 of his children before he was finally caught by police. It is estimated that he killed between 20-100 victims, surpassing Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy, although the exact number is not known. He was sentenced and hanged in 1896.

3. Carl Panzram

Carl Panzram was a 6 foot, tattooed serial killer, rapist, arsonist, and burglar. He admitted to 21 murders and more than 1,000 rapes of young boys and men. In his autobiography he wrote in prison he said that for all of my crimes, I am not the least bit sorry, I hate the whole damned human race including myself. When he was just 12 years old, he went to a notorious reform school called Red Wing, where he and the other boys were punished by the staff with beatings and torture.

After graduating he would travel across the country by sneaking on trains, burning and burglarizing buildings and raping countless young men and boys. He was in and out of jail but finally escaped and went to New York where he committed his first murders. After robbing the home of Willam Howard Taft, the future President, he was able to buy a yacht with the money. He would hire sailors to work on the yacht, get them drunk, rape them then shoot them and toss their bodies into the sea.

When the yacht finally sank from neglect, he snuck on a ship to Angola, Africa where he hired guides for a crocodile hunting expedition. As their canoe went down the river he shot them one by one before feeding their corpses to the crocodiles. Back in the US he murdered more young boys and was finally caught again. He was sentenced to death by hanging in 1930 after killing even more people in prison. When the executioner asked if he had any last words he yelled: "hurry up you Hoosier bastard... I could kill a dozen men while you're fooling around!"

The Carl Panzram story is extremely interesting. His psychology is a bit unique and up until his last days he was abused and tortured.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, he was treated better towards the end, thanks to Henry Lesser. Check out the documentary on Netflix, it's a fascinating story!

The cannibal was an organ player? That's just too easy...

So the Saw movies ripped off this serial killer?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

So, I didn't read these, because I like what sanity I have, but I actually stopped watching Saw after the 3rd one. That messed me up.

H. H. Holmes had a hotel not a pharmacy...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Could be wrong, but I think it was both. Pharmacy on the ground floor, 2 or 3 floors of hotel rooms above. Too bad it burned to the ground..

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You're correct. Holmes came to own a pharmacy/drugstore after his employer died of 'natural' causes and his wife disappeared.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

In 1888 he purchased the lot across from the pharmacy and then built the murder castle. There's a documentary on Netflix on Holmes.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Last thing I swear! He did have a pharmacy and a few other small shops on the ground level of the castle.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Fascinating. I know his story from Mysteries at the Museum, if you're familiar with the show. I'll have to check out the documentary. (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2/2) Wouldn't happen to remember the title of it, would you?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's a good doc on Netflix called H. H. Holmes: Americas First Serial Killer. Tony Jay is the narrator. Very intriguing and chilling.

Fantastic book. I read it in 3 days. Compelling use of architecture and MURDER.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

People always recommend it for the architecture, but I haven't read it b/c of murder. Is it like, scary? I'm a wimp.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not "scary" per say, it is very graphic and historically accurate. Very well written.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, Erik Larson's other books don't hold up as well.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I concur. While they are good, you're right - they just don't hold up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the info. That would just give me unneccessary anxiety. Too bad I miss out on such a popular book, and I live in Chicago too.

Very well researched and well written. Dude was a straight up piece of shit. Coming to a theater near you. Director: Scorsese. Lead: Leo.

9 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 0

When was this confirmed? Last I read was that Leo bought the film rights when Tom Cruise gave them up.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd pay to see that. Maybe better with Ballydoyle Cummerbund

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0
