One of America’s defining features is the right to vote. There are people in other countries who don’t get to vote for their leaders, but on July 4, 1776, American stood as one and declared itself an independent country! A democracy! We vote for our leaders! What better way to celebrate being American than registering to vote or checking your voter registration?

You can register to vote within your state by contacting its board of elections. I’m told that some states make it hard to register to vote. If you go to vote.gov it will direct you to your state’s register to vote page. If you have trouble registering, I’m told that vote.org, makes it easier, but it asks a lot of personal questions, which aren’t necessary to register (be sure to use a burner email address with them to avoid any spam risk).

If you have already registered to vote, please double check to make sure that you have not been purged from voter rolls, as some states have been removing legally registered voters without informing them. This is an important election, let’s aim for 100% voter participation!

This is why I love Minnesota. Same-day registration means the state GOP can't do any fuckery beyond making you wait five minutes.

And theyve done a lot more purging if the voter rolls these last few years. I had just registered for the last election and got purged.

5 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

That’s alarming. May I ask which state?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Just checked mine this morning and I'm all set. I have a feeling this presidential election will see the highest voter turnout in history

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I sincerely hope so! Congratulations on being registered!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just double checked my registration and elected to have my ballot mailed to me. Not going to get fucked out of voting.

2020's should be 2024's if the status quo doesn't change. 2020 should be him in a hazmat suit if an image exists of it.

Many countries doesn't disenfranchise their citizens. US states does.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I'm all for this, but want to know who owns / operates vote.org and where the information I put into the site to check goes.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

The Red states love the purge

Supposedly they think they are removing dead people and people who left the state & “accidentally” removed legal voters. It happens mostly>

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

< because if the only people being purged or Democrats, that means Republicans will always win.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't vote like your life depends on it. Vote BECAUSE your life depends on it.

I had to upvote, Captain's orders...!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should be Uncle Sam in the pic not Cap. Cap is fictional, Uncle Sam is real.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

God, we need a Captain America. If I could have any of the MCU heros, it would be that one.

not one of the smart guys who can solve earth's biggest problems?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

We have smart people who can solve all of Earths problems right now. What we don't seem to have is someone who can unite people with them.

That is such a surface-level analysis. Cap was against registering individuals with superpowers as it required those with 1/2

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Secret IDs (to protect themselves and their families) to publicly register, putting a target on their backs by villains & enemies.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

The Act put individuals and families who couldn't defend themselves in unnecessary danger. That is why Cap opposed it.

You let us down by reelecting that blubbering idiot. Trump is still the only real man leading a country on this continent.

Bahahaha good one.

I learned long ago not to argue with ppl like you. Good day

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Why do Americans have to register in order to vote? Honest question.

5 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 0

Bureaucracy.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

You have to register in South Africa as well. Just to make sure your details are up to date and you're voting in the district you live in.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is important for municipal and provincial elections as well as our national elections.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Think of every country in the EU voting for who will be the next PM of the EU. That's pretty much why.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 5

I've moved from one nation to another in EU. I had to inform both of my new address - end of. I'm invited to the elections that I'm allowed

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

to vote in. The ballot address is on the invitation. Sometimes I vote for my local government in my new country, sometimes I vote for the

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

parliament in my country of origin. For the latter I may have to drive 2-3 hours to get to the ballot, but my employee is fine giving the

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

day off.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Here in Canada we do our taxes once a year, we change address if needed to in our tax form and voilà. We can vote. There is exemption but..

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And even if you don’t file your taxes or if you’ve moved or whatever, you can just show up on Election Day with sufficient ID and vote.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And we get a voter’s card mailed to us telling us that we’re registered to vote and where and when to go.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In canada you just go to your local polling place, show your ID, they check and see if you voted already, and then you vote. Quick and easy.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In addition registering to vote, if male, requires signing up for the draft (and in the past bucket brigade, which was old firefighters)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In addition, just some extra history. The reason it took so long for women to get the right to vote was due to most not wanting the draft.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which is why for Women, registering to vote does not require signing up for the draft.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Several reasons, but essentially if you limit who has access to a highly regulated voting system, you greatly affect an election.

5 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 3

Also, because the US doesn't have a centralised register of its people (like we do for example in the Netherlands).

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That's also the reason they have a census every few years or so.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That seems like a huge thing. I've wondered why the gov doesn't just keep a list of citizens and the check them off when they vote.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Registering to vote is standard around the world. Purging voter registrations is something that appears to be wholly american.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

A quick google indicates that separate voter registration isn't that common around the world. Where do you live? Do you need to register?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

UK, but once you are registered, you are very unlikely to be urges from the voter roll unless you move/die.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In many countries people are registered into a national registry at birth, and thus aren't required to register separately to vote.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The United States is so-called because it is literally a union of individual state governments, each of which has their own voting system. >

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not so different from the EU in some respects. On top of that, most elections are organized at the local level by ->

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

county or even city governments, rather than the state. Those lower levels are typically where the actual register of voters is held.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Voting is voluntary, not enforced, and was never intended to be a civic duty. Originally, Americans were limited to directly deciding the 1/

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

House of Representatives and local officials. Notably, this was a measure intended to protect against using voting to enforce a sort of 2/

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

tyranny of one part of the population over another. When we removed part of that protection, well... you see what resulted. 3/3

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

I don't see how that's relevant. Most countries don't have mandatory voting and don't require you to register. You're a citizen, you get to

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Vote

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's relevant because it is part of the design mindset of limiting the power of the common people to influence government. As I detailed 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

further down the replies, which were important to read instead of stopping at one spot and missing the point.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

In Australia, Voting is compulsory, you still need to ensure you are on the electoral roll. That could be considered registering I guess.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It should be noted Australia is designed to operate as a democracy, while the U.S. is not. The U.S. is designed to operate as a 1/

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

meritocracy, but instead functions as a plutocracy. 2/2

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Initially it was developed to prevent non-citizen immigrants from voting (reasonable enough - only citizens are allowed to vote) but it has

5 years ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

been (and arguably still is) used to disenfranchise minorities who are citizens.

5 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 5

Initially it was developed to make sure only landowners could vote.

5 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

This is false. Registering is super super easy, it ensures you only vote once, are eligible, and to assign you a polling location.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 20

Dont you guys have a personal number of sorts that can be crossed out when voting? Registering seems a medieval requirement. Personal ID?

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

It’s literally going online to your county board of elections website and confirming your address is correct. It’s like a click of a button

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet European countries ensure all those things without voter requiring registration.

5 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

In Germany you have to register where your living adress is. And you are automatically getting your voting stuff.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Voter roll purges and laws preventing felons from voting disproportionately affect minorities. In theory, I have no problem with voter

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Why wouldnt you let felons vote? Arent prison sentences supposed to be the punishment? They are still citizens.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

registration, but in practice, unscrupulous policymakers have twisted voter registration laws to deprive people of their right to vote.
