Here she is looking infinitely uncomfortable. I've had her for almost three weeks, after animal services called and asked me to foster her. Last night, I heard her meowing a lot in her room, which is really unlike her, so I checked on her. There was fluid in small patches all over the floor and she was moving constantly and meowing. I knew shit was about to go down so I grabbed scissors (in case she didn't instinctually cut the cords), gloves, and clothes I didn't mind getting dirty. Then I hunkered down, comforting her as best I could. I put this picture on imgur a couple days ago and asked people how many kittens they thought she would have, and most people said either four or six. (And most litters are between four and six, so those were good guesses.) Let's see who was correct!

She climbed into my lap and started having contractions which rocked her whole body. It was like she was trying to do crunches. She climbed out of my lap and one second it was just me and her in the room and the next second there was this little orange thing meowing incessantly. She ripped the sac and cleaned him off then chewed the cord and ate everything (my scissors were wholly unnecessary, she was a pro). Then she repeated that process EIGHT TIMES!

The second one came about ten minutes after the first. That set the pace, and it took a little under 90 minutes to give birth to all eight. Sadly, one of them was stillborn. He never took a breath. That was hard to see and I couldn't bring myself to take a picture of him (he was a solid orange male). She instinctually ripped the sac but then stopped, sniffed him for a minute, chewed the cord to break it, and walked away, and never once went back to him. I put him in a little box and buried him in the backyard this morning.

Mama's name is Blossom so I decided to name her kittens after flowers. She had three males (counting the stillborn) and five females. Two orange, two tortie, and four black. Without further ado, let me introduce you to the newest additions to my ever-expanding foster family!

I put collars on the four black ones so I can tell them apart (that's important because I'll weigh them everyday to make sure they're thriving). Mama is doing just fine and is happily nursing. She'll take care of all their needs until they're about four weeks old, when I can introduce them to food and litter boxes. My job as a foster is to keep them healthy and safe until they are eight weeks old and two pounds, then to get them fixed, and take them back to the shelter to get adopted. (I check on them everyday until they're adopted, which usually happens within a week.) I'll post updates as they grow!

FP Edit: glad y'all love newborn kittens! PLEASE consider fostering in your area! Just call your local humane society or animal control and they'll tell you how to do it. If you have any questions, I've been fostering for a while and would be happy to answer any questions!

She does not look happy that she popped.. put them back!

Rest in peace second orange male :-(

8 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 0

I named him Foxglove, forgot to put that in the post. I figured he deserved a name, too

8 years ago | Likes 88 Dislikes 0

Ohhh no I was not ready for that just now. [I'm glad you honored him with a name, he did deserve one. :( ]

8 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

Great hooman. Give the momma cat some love from me :)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Done!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What a happy flower family!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I know, it's one of my favorite themed litters so far!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for sharing. I've always wanted to take care of a pregnant cat and see the little ones grow.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It is SO rewarding and fun, but it does make the "goodbye"s a little harder

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s crazy watching how instinct takes over when cats have babies. I’ve only seen it once, but it was intense. Sorry for the stillborn. :(

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Thanks, that was really tough. It kinda put the whole miraculous thing in a sad light, but I just reminded myself there are 7

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

other babies that are alive and need love, too!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Hugs to help.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

8 kittens! I guessed half, but wow!!

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I thought she was having five when I first got her, but she kept growing and growing so I knew it would be a lot!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

So many kittens! I fostered a pregnant mom once, but she miscarried shortly after I took her in. She was super young and hadn't been 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

properly cared for previously. Ended up adopting her myself because I couldn't bear to give her away. She was the best cat. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aw, that story started off sad but ended up happy! So glad you two found each other :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How can i know you didn’t steal them? v

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 2

Because you're the guy with the answers

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I see what you did there!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aw @OP, you make me miss my 6 foster babies. Although I kept two, so the pain has lessened.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Foster fails are the best!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are at least two fathers to that litter. Mama cat got her freak on.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yeah, Aster seems like a brother from another father...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

@OP Mama looks like my angry tortie!

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

i love this picture so much thank you for sharing

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You're welcome! She is actually sweet but looks like murder is all she thinks about.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha, resting bitch faces all around!

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

8 weeks and 2lbs? Is that normal? My cats were all around 1lb at 8 weeks except my Maine coon. None were malnurished or runts.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, my last litter wasn't two pounds until they were about 14 weeks, so it totally depends

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Did anyone else read that as pooped?

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

This was the comment I was going to make, but I knew, I KNEW, that someone else already had, and I couldn't have been the only one.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

^ Same thing happens to me EVERY TIME I WANT TO COMMENT. I feel your pain

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I really want one! Where are you located?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

OP is in huntsville, Alabama

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm in Huntsville, Alabama! Any chance you're close by?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The orange one should have been named Gingersnap

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dangit, you're right, what a missed opportunity!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We got the orange boy from our daughter and named him Tigger!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But that's a cookie...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I googled it and apparently it's also a flower!! I thought it was just a cookie, too!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why only 8 weeks? In Finland they have to be 12 weeks before separating from their mother.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The shelter says they can be spayed once they are two pounds and/or eight weeks. But I have had other kittens pass away from the anesthesia

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

at 2 pounds, so I always keep them for 10 weeks and/or 2.5-3 pounds. Haven't had an issue since doing that!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Oh, and I keep their mother with them as long as I can! They really flourish when they're together!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Read somewhere that different colored kittens are from different dad cats ( no idea if true or not). @OP's cat is a slut.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

It is true! In theory all 8 could have different fathers, but from the looks of it theres probably only 2 with hers.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I did not know that! That is good to know for future reference!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup! it's called Superfecundation - basically where we release 1 egg during ovulation, they release multiples. They're also induced >>

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

ovulators, so they only release eggs during copulation. tbh it's a great way to ensure DNA diversity!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And a great way to have a colorful litter, I bet!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haha, potentially! She is a dilute calico, so she could have any color kittens, but you're right - ONE orange kitten and seven dark ones?!

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Shelter trick: a tiny dot of nail polish in different colors for each kitten on one ear-tip is also a great way to tell kittens apart.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Would the colors show up even on black ears? I'd have to use bright colors, right?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You rock!! We picked up two kittens from the pound both were fostered before coming to live with us and are amazing kitties!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks, and yay for your awesome kitties!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

do you have to pay yourself to get them fixed? i'm assuming shelter takes care of that no?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Shelter pays for spaying/neutering, shots, deworming, and microchips.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do not pay for any medical costs associated with fostering, the shelter takes care of all of it!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I read that kittens that get to stay 12 weeks with their mother turn out to be less agressive, more easy going cats... please try this :)

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I also played music not too loud, but not softly. They all adjusted very well. But hooman contact at early age is most important.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree! With my older (ie: 4 weeks) foster kittens, I talk a lot and make a lot of noise and handle them a lot so they get used to it

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I definitely try to keep mothers with babies for 8 weeks, but I'll bring what you said up with the shelter!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As a converted dog person, I handled the kittens frequently, talked to them like dogs and had a bunch of people play with them.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I WANT ONE

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

You can, in eight weeks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

THIS IS MY REACTION TO THE FULLEST

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My apartment doesn't allow pets :(

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've been there! It makes it that much more satisfying when you CAN have pets!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha, call your local shelter and see if they have any kittens that need fostering! No long-term commitment, just unlimited kitten snuggles

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Or find a local rescue group. They're usually non-profit and provide the food and vet service (but you have to take them to adoption events

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, also a great way to go, thank you!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My house has a no pet rule

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Snapdragon has always sounded bad ass to me.

8 years ago | Likes 315 Dislikes 0

It's a pretty decent ENB.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, it's my favorite name out of the bunch :)

8 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 0

thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn't know aster was a flower

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gotta love Google!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We all know that cat is going to end up being named Snappy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh my god that's all I've called him so far!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But which one it is 4 series 6 series or 8 series ?

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was like "flower names for boys?" & then Snapdragon pops up. "Never mind, we're good" lol

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Haha, yeah, after a google search I came up with three: Snapdragon, Aster, and Foxglove. That's about it!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

R.i.p Foxglove. :(

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And my fave flower as my grandparemts always grew it :-)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Makes hell of a potions.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Super Restores ftw

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

R/unexpectedrunescape

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My cat had her kittens in my sock drawer.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Mama kept trying to move into the litter box, I kept having to gently guide her away from it. I guess they like boxes for birthing?

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

They do, I have made mine birthing boxes with a roof over it sometimes and they seems to really like going in there to birth :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude, I had TWO separate birthing boxes set up, but she wanted to be either next to me or in the litter box! I was like USE THE BOX!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aaaw, what a cutie! They do have funny personaities and you never do know what they will do :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Then she took them up into the attic (she had three) and I had a belly crawl across the rafters and through insulation get them.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Haha, she wasn't making it easy on you!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Didn’t know animals just bite off the cord. That’s sorta gross, but makes sense. Guessing it wasn’t that cats first time. :)

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Well, animals don't have scissors. They also eat the sac and placenta so predators don't smell them.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

And because it's good protein.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I bet she was STUFFED after giving birth!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, sometimes they can't go out and hunt for a while after giving birth, plus birth uses lots of calories, gotta recoup somehow!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You're absolutely right, she was found with seven eight-week old kittens, so she had at least one litter before this one!

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Your cat gets around.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Haha, she definitely did! Her days of gallivanting around and OVER!

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I'm expecting Petunia to be a nosy gossip who is obsessed with keeping her feeding area clean.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was going to nickname her "Petty," but I'm afraid that's setting her up for failure!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

At least Petty wouldn't keep her nephew in a cupboard under the stairs until age 11.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But really, they are all adorable. Makes me wish I wasn't allergic.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like that all the names are super cute and then you got Snapdragon lol I thought of Qualcomm instead of the flower

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

Do you know how hard it is to find a masculine sounding flower name?? Snapdragon's about as masculine as it got! And it is a badass name :)

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Hahahha yeah just thought it was anticlimactic with all the cute and flowery names then SNAPDRAGON LORD OF THE FLUFFS.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Foxglove would have also been acceptable, but Snapdragon is badass.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I named the kitten that passed away Foxglove :( I figured he deserved a name, too

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Aww, well I'm glad he got a name. Poor baby.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Aaw I'm sorry that's super sad dude :(

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh wow! Well done @OP. Question: are they getting fixed at 8 weeks? Because in the Netherlands we generally wouldn't do it that early.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

2 pounds is the rule of thumb with most shelters. I prefer to wait longer like OP, 10 or 12 weeks.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The shelter says they can be fixed at eight weeks/2 pounds. I personally prefer more like 10-12 weeks, as I have had a couple of kittens

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

pass away due to the anesthesia. So I always hold them for at least 10 weeks, sometimes more.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I prefer to let them mature before that happens but I understand that some shelters may be in a hurry. =/

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

FWIU, they do it earlier, because, like human circumcision, the longer you wait, the more blood vessels the organs develop. But idk for sure

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This is true, however vets are trained to clamp and tie things off so it's not a matter of "If they're 6 months you can't do it anymore".

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Huh, hadn't heard that, but I guess it makes sense.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
