Do you wish there was some sort of podcast version of your favorite TV show? With awesome characters, engaging plot-lines, and crazy cliffhangers?
Well, there are. They’re called “audio drama.” And they’re amazing.
Right now, audio drama is having a bit of a renaissance. But it’s not all shows like Welcome to Night Vale, The Black Tapes, The Message, and Tanis. There’s weirder, more underground, stuff out there. Podcasts off the beaten path that you should definitely check out.
So, here you go, 8 podcasts that are either super new or pretty obscure:
Alice Isn't Dead
This is from the same people that brought us Welcome to Night Vale, and it’s got that same middle-of-nowhere weirdness that WTNV does so successfully. And it may or may not have Winona Ryder. (It doesn’t have Winona Ryder)
Website: http://www.nightvalepresents.com/aliceisntdead/
iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/alice-isnt-dead/id1088978354?mt=2
Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/nightvaleradio/alice-isnt-dead-ep-1-omelet
Archive 81
A “found footage” audio drama, this one’s creepy. Like, really creepy. The premise is that we’re listening to some of the tape that an archivist recorded right before he disappeared. Needless to say, the tapes themselves are scary/weird/unsettling. There’s teleportation, an opera that shatters souls, and a cult that can rewrite memory. Listen during the daytime. Oh, and the sound design kicks ass.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/archive-81/id1098194172?mt=2
Ars Paradoxica
Ars Paradoxica is a time travel show, so future you has probably already checked this out. It’s about a government scientist in the near future who gets sucked back in time all the way back to WWII. Does she fight Nazis? Does she comprehend the destruction of the atomic bomb? Does she fall in love? Listen and find out.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ars-paradoxica/id1006173000?mt=2
The Bright Sessions
It’s The X-Men meets In Treatment. You’re listening to the recordings of a therapist as she tries to help some… unusual patients. You’ve got empaths, time-travelers, mind-readers, and evil jerks. Come for the superpowers, stay for the delicate portraits of ordinary people trying to live their lives. Oh, and the acting’s steller.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bright-sessions/id1053268058?mt=2
King Falls AM
It’s a community radio broadcast in a weird small town, so the Night Vale comparisons are both apt and warranted. But King Falls AM carves its own path, moving away from the “weird for weird’s sake” ethos of Night Vale. There are strong ongoing plotlines, good characters, and the acting is pretty great. It’s also funny as heck.

Serendipity
This one is artsy. Like, really artsy. Kind of like The Truth, but even more experimental. It can be hit or miss at times, but I really like the fact that it’s exploring the potential of stories in sound. Plus, the people that produce the podcast are really trying to energize the audio drama community, so that’s always a plus.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serendipity/id1015992066?mt=2
The Truth
This is neither obscure or new… but it’s just so good I had to put it on here. It’s an anthology series, each episode is a new, fully acted story. Jonathan Mitchell really pushes the medium of audio storytelling to its limit. And they’re starting up a new miniseries called Songonauts, which is like if Steven Universe and Sliders had a baby, and that baby played a mean keytar. If you prefer your audio fiction more dread-filled, try out That’s Democracy. That’s Democracy is essentially perfect.

We're Alive: Lockdown
A continuation of one of the most popular audio drama podcasts ever, We’re Alive: Lockdown, is kind of like The Walking Dead, if The Walking Dead’s plot actually went anywhere. We’re Alive was one of the first podcasts with legit sound design and competent production, so their second series should be even stronger. This one’s set in a prison, with the guards and prisoners having to work together to fight a zombie apocalypse. There’s only been five episodes, so get in on the ground floor.

Erie Canal Theatre is a great one I'd love to see get more popular.
PlebosaurusRex
The IT guy at my college produced, wrote, and directed that last one. He's been enjoying success with it and we're all really proud of him!
Duckbutter3001
That's Democracy from The Truth left me with goosebumps and butterflies in my stomach. 10/10
Dangerdan00
Wolf 359 is absolutely amazing! A show about the advantages of floating, tiny and alone, in the middle of nowhere. Wolf359.fm
ButtMunchersUnite

Draketen
There's only two podcasts I frequent, co-optional and dropped frames.
Shaelai

Gross. Itunes.

Dude. If you don't like iTunes, just search for the podcasts.
ChaoticScholar
Lore by Aaron Mahnke. Music, voice and content are top notch. Thank me later.
ImOnlyUsingThisAccountToUploadMyHikingPictures
I disagree. The content is okay, mahnke is so PC that it takes away from the show. And his voice is shakey and sort of off.
GrImmgur
Am I missing something? There are only two there. Or am I just being stupid.
Zonhiver
My mobile has been doing that too.
GodzillasBFF
Limetown is awesome as well
ICanBelieveItsProbablyMargarine
The Black Tapes podcast is fantastic as well. Chilling Docudrama about the paranormal.
SexyBiologist
I loved Black Tapes, but that weird break from March to May was frustrating
ICanBelieveItsProbablyMargarine
I actually find two weeks to be way too long for another episode.

From the same guys who do Alice isn't dead is Welcome to Nightvale, a rad podcast with 114 and counting episodes plus live performances
GoodGuyGabers
No Welcome to Nightvale?!?
CarlosPerfectHair
It was mentioned in the blurb at the top I believe.
theplanningplanmanwithaplannedplan
I think it's supposed to be podcasts that people haven't heard of.
GoodGuyGabers
I guess, Alice isn't dead is a subsidiary of wtnv so I thought there might be a shout out or something.
susannahdeanofnewyork
Can I listen to any of these without iTunes?
BrynnSandifer
Are there any podcast apps for windows?
AstralBeast808
I have Spotify Premium, and they just started supporting podcasts! It's awesome. Not all podcasts are on there though. Not awesome.
HowMuchWoodCouldAWoodDuckDuckIfAWoodDuckCouldDuckWood
I use Pocket Casts on Android. works really well
BadaBingBadaBooom
Use Stitcher.
ICanBelieveItsProbablyMargarine
Most, if not all, podcasts are embedded to an RSS feed. Which means you can have it downloaded to your RSS channel without itunes
Leafshade
I use Podbay.
HanShotFirst39
I use Podcast Addict on Android. I believe Play Music has podcasts too now. If you have Android.
SamTheBook
Podcast Addict is good, Pocket Casts works too, but I haven't yet figured out how to subscribe to a podcast in Google Play Music.
mugu88
I've been using Podcast Addict for a couple of years. I like that they've been improving it over time.
averyislands
Yeah, just search for them in your favorite podcatcher. 80% of people use iTunes, so I thought it was the most relevant link.
tagyoureit
80% of Apple users. 7 Billion people in the world and over a billion of them Android users your numbers fall a little flat.

Miss understood you. And that just tells me is there is massive growth potential for podcasts in Android if that many listeners are iOS.
susannahdeanofnewyork
I did download it but it's not working on my phone. Thank you for the tip!
McStabsworth
I use the podbay app on my android. It works fine so long as you dont leave the app then it craps out...
misplacedhippie
I use podcast addict. You can stream or download
CopperWench
THE ADVENTURE ZONE!
yapyapblahblahdribbledribbledribble
listening to that now
CopperWench
What a good good podcast boy!
prinnnneh
Thanks op! Question: If I really, really hate Nightvale, but love stuff like radiolab, serial, wiretap, etc, which one of these do I get?
prinnnneh
More ear info on me: I also really dig Gregory Whiteheads stuff and detest bad, poor and/or boring audio engineering
lemonlime
RADIOLAB!! My all time fave podcast!
MCBAIN4
The Black Tapes podcast
atardisbroughtmehere
Limetown would be perfect
averyislands
Hmmmmm... I'd go for either Archive 81 (the sound design is awesome) or The Truth.
prinnnneh
Thanks mate, will check them out

Omexamorph
Out of curiosity, why do you hate Nightvale?
prinnnneh
The voice acting, the writing, elements of the sound design, the style of humour and the poor pacing. Like the premise, hate the execution
prinnnneh
I'm guessing you like it, but just so you know, my opinion is just my opinion. There might be other stuff we both like :)
Omexamorph
Yep, I just usually hear positive critiques of it and I think to be credible you have to know a things shortcomings as well list strengths.
prinnnneh
To me, there's nothing good about it except possibly the premise. It's the only podcast, apart from maybe the nerdist, that I can't stand
SexyBiologist
If you like serial, listen to Limetown. It's a very similar layout of a late twenties lady reporter trying to figure out a creepy history.
prinnnneh
Heard it, liked it. Thanks for mentioning it though :) Got any more?
SexyBiologist
Keeping more in the thread of spooky Podcasts, NoSleep and Pseudopod are pretty good anthologies, but each episode hit or miss. 1/2
SexyBiologist
Black Tapes is another serial-y one but you've probably already heard it, but I love how they play with creepy sounds in it. 2/2
prinnnneh
Thank you, heard some, not others. Will check them out. Enjoy your Saturday :)
