My new designed PC

This is the result of my first woodworking project with my PC.
I really like how it turned out and I hope you will like it too. :D

Tools:
drill / jigsaw / bucksaw / drilling machine / circle cutter / file / wood glue / sandpaper /
random orbital sander

Materials:
a wooden panel (oak) / a thin plywood panel / RGB fans from ICETEK / acrylic glass / some screws and nuts / aluminium bar / walnut veneer

{Edited}:
Because everyone is concerned about my airflow lol, I have about 4 other fans in the tower and a lot of whole in the existing case (picture).
So the front fans are some kinda cosmetical update.
Anyway, I tested the PC for about a week by now, and it isn't any louder or smth so I guess the gap is big enough. :D

Another picture of the final result, but THIS IS HOW I MADE IT :

This is the standard (old) facade of my PC, and I thought this does not look special at all, so i STARTED DRAWING :

This is the idea I had. I made a sketch on cardboard and decided to TURN THIS INTO REALITY: Two fans centered in the front of my PC. LET'S GO :

THis is the wood I used. It is a glued oak wood panel.

I drew the cutouts on the wood and started cutting with the jigsaw. This went pretty well.

(Unfortunately I had to made the holes a little bigger later.)

Next up I needed some panel to hide the fans behind. I went for some plywood and cut some very clean circles.

After that I glued them together.

This is the walnut veneer I will use for this project.

Next up I tried to glue the veneer to the main body with wood glue. This wasn't easy at all because I had them to be attached perfectly centered and without any gaps.

In this process I got the idea to bend the veneer around the corners. Here I gave it a little test and I got pretty good results.

(Unfortunately I didn't took any pictures of the process, but actually it wasn't that hard. I just put some water on the corners with my fingers and started bending very carefully. Also I put some wood glue to the sides to ensure it remains like this after release.)

After this I cut a piece of aluminium off the bar and bend it like a little handle. It looks really sick once it's attached, but later it turned out that it couldn't really handle the weight of the entire PC. :D

The next step is to put the fans in place. This is the system I decided to use.

Now I cut 6 pieces of the aluminium and drew 3 holes in each one.

Then I attached them with the screws that came with the box.

Here I am putting them in place. They had better grip in the main body than I ever expected.

This is the first time I had everything together and could take a look from the front.

Some more pictures.

The next step was to create some hole for the upper ports. I didn't really think about that while plannig, so this wasn't easy at all.

Finally I came up with something like this. Not really pretty, but it works at least.
(Maybe I will remake this section in the future.)

Finally I decided to protect the fans in some way. So I came up with the idea to place some acrylic glass in front. Here I was measuring the places for the holes I drilled.

This is how i attached them. Not very special or beautiful, but it does its job.

I also installed some pieces of rubber tube to keep a tiny gap between the acrylic glass and the wood for the air flow.

And this is how it looked like after unwrapping - pretty sick.

At this point I was finished with my project. Here are some more pictures and close ups. Thanks for reading. :D

This is the final result. (But without the aluminium handle, I forgot to attach it befor I took this image. :D)
See ya!! :)

Just for fun and beauty ?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jeez all those comments correcting OP for messing up the title. OP is no native speaker. Could just be a case of bad word choice.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks bro, you're right. ?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

1. That. Is. Flipping. Awesome. 2. Airflow looks a little restricted. How are the temps?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I think you mean veneer...

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You live in the States? Never saw a Corsair sold in the US. They do manufacture excellent SSD & Ram. Yours looks great, enjoy ??

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks dude. I am from Europe

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I lived on the Island of Malta for a few years. Owned a restaurant.....still enjoy cooking.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha nice, keep doing watcha like.

Corsair 200r? Good case. I got mine for the 3 5.25" bays that i now have filled up. What kind of hardware do you have in it?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly. When I bought it I wanted to have the one with the window in it, but it was out of stock. Maybe that will be a future project.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ASUS Z-170A, GForce GTX 970 windforce 4GB, 2x Kingston HyperX 480 GB SSD, be quiet L8-500W power supply unit, and some crucial 16GB RAM

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually one of the reasons i got the case was because it doesn't have a window and the looks are clean and simple.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah it does. I wanted hats pimpit up a little. ?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So jealous. Ive always wanted a decent set up. Its like my dream

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pro tip, how your computer looks, means nothing to how decent it is.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im aware. I was simply saying it makes me want my dream pc even more

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're gonna want to space that glass out a lot more. Massive restriction on the fans. Other than that, it looks like a very nice job.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks dude. :)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I recommend adding a dust filter behind or infront of the fans if you dont want dust bunnies in your pc. It accumulates fast.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

When you dont have a filter.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I don't have dust filters behind or before my original fans, but thanks for the advice dude.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cool face plate mod, I would have moved the IO at a 90' angle and center it above the fans to leave a cleaner front look

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You think the ports should be on the top? This sounds interesting, I may go for it in the next mod

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, they are probably just screwed in so it would not be hard to move and would leave you with a cleaner all wood front. In your last pic

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You even have a nice blank spot at the top of your front cover for them to be in.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's a great idea, thanks. I am currently unclear about what I should do with the old port hole.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Another sheet of veneer will cover that right up.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Alternative title “I roughly cut some holes in a bit of wood and stuck it to a pre existing metal PC”

5 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 4

...Which is more work than most will do. A clean mod is a good mod.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Exactly dude

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Its not even clean.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

The outside is. "Hiding sins", as @mistersavage calls it, is perfectly fine.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What kind of clickbait title is this

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Very LGR

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Came to the comments to say the same thing

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did you have the words "wood grain" in Clint's voice in your head when you saw the images?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who is that lol?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Clint is LGR/Lazy Game Reviews on Youtube.. He likes wood grain things. https://www.youtube.com/user/phreakindee/search?query=wood+grain

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

immediately

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Glad it wasn't just me then!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Did you soak it in wood first?

5 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 2

Do you mean the veneer? I just sprinkled the edges with a little water.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's an old meme lol

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like where your head is at, but execution needs work. Logs, bro. Soak it in logs.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Haha dangit. You're right!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wood is just lightly processed logs tho

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*veneer

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Changed it lol. Thanks:)

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was also confused, but I believe op may not be a native English speaker furnier is German for "to cover with a veneer"

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks for helping me out here, I changed it in the meanwhile. :D

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It lacks finesse but the idea has been nicely executed. 7/10.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should I upgrade it in some way?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hm,. perhaps some finely crafted, narrow rims in the circular cut-outs with brass screws. Maybe also 'finesse' the rectangular cut-out too.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could also make a whole case out of wood & metal, encasing the main chassis inside, but that'd take a lot of work, finesse and skill.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd suggest getting the new metal rims laser cut, polished to 2000 grit then have the wood oiled then waxed for a nice finish. :) Good luck!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks for sharing your ideas. I might go for a new cut out at the top edge. I am also thinking about making a whole case out of wood ..

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

.. for a new project in the future.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Use the existing chassis as a basis or 'sub-frame'. Get the wood fitted 'blind' (so no actual joins can be seen). Get it finished to a 1/2

*I made a faceplate for my PC tower out of WOOD*

I think he meant, *I made the computer chip out of wood*

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still looks better than that over priced space heater from Apple

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

dude so if I tape a chunk of gold to the front of my pc, I can declare I now own a gold pc?

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I came down to make this same correction.

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Yes this is what was done

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope OP likes to clean dust out of his PC

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dust always accumulates. Filters are fucking pointless and just break dust into smaller particles. That's why god invented the datavac

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

:D

5 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 3

Dummy.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I refinish & sell cases as a side hobby. Faceplate+WindowBezel=Practically done. Great job OP. ?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Impressive :) Happy to see some real hobby stuff.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just love how happy you are about it. Thank you for sharing.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You want a bigger spacer between the wood and the plexy, that hole needs to be bigger for more airflow

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still pretty neat, good job OP

5 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

Yes, looks Nice ✌️

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The design aesthetic is Apple pro level.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks man. I may go for a whole wooden case next time . :)

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

No stain?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't the glass block the airflow for the fans? I'm not sure it's a good idea

5 years ago | Likes 44 Dislikes 0

My store case had huge issues with airflow. I got some longer screws and mounted it 3/4" further and used some window screen for a filter

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was getting cpu temp up to 80c. Now it doesn't get above 70c. Also put in 2 more exhaust fans

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

+ cleaning

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, my case is completely covered in the front with a small slot and still moves air fine. Those fans are designed for static pressure

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I put some rubber around the screws between the glass and he front. So there is gap about 5 mm.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Can you hear any noise from the airflow through the gap?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, it looks nice but still it's blocking the airflow. I would at least make some holes in the glass

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 3

pretty sure it'll draw enough air from the sides. There's dozens of premade cases that draw air similarly with OK results.

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I have interchangeable face plate. Glass and Mesh. Glass was about 5*C warmer and it has like 2 inches of mesh on the sides.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep, my case fans are on the underside of the case and they draw from the sides, air flow is AMAZING. My gpu used to get hot but not anymore

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you for this idea. I think I will make some changes soon. :D

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I agree with the other guy, the holes will ruin the look, only do it if you encounter cooling issues, Antec P100 did just fine.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just do some tests to see it your temps are affected by the glass. If they are, adjust the distance, don't ruin the glass.
