Buys real estate, borrows against it, builds fugly real estate, grossly overvalues his assets & borrows even more, files for bankruptcy every time the bills pile up too high, scams investors and stiffs contractors & lawyers in the process, starts laundering money for the Russian mob, runs side scams like Trump U, keeps borrowing. I doubt he ever had an actual billion to his name but the banks enabled him to live like a pretend-billionaire.

He started with over 200 million in NY real estate inherited in the '80s. Today's value for that RE would be well over 15 billion. If he'd taken the money and put it in indexed stocks it would be worth about 10 billion. He hasn't said in a while, but even his own estimates ranged from 2-6 billion. So with years of fraud, cheating, money laundering for Russians, and other criminal behaviour he managed to lose BILLIONS. More money than most people could even spend in that time. Business genius!

No, I don't think he was. I think he lied his way onto the rich list and then lied more every year to "increase his wealth" every year. Because he borrows against everything he owns, and has lied about the value of everything he owns, there's a very real possibility he's broke. Remember when he said he had $400 million in the bank and then had to get an insurance company to put up a bond for $91.6 million in the E Jean Carroll case? Is that because he couldn't pay it himself?

Okay, so even though Warren Buffet never said this, it's a question that deserves an answer. The answer is that nearly every wealthy person will tell you that the way to stay rich is to not spend your own money. They get free stuff all the time and have other people pay for them in exchange for good will or brand promotion. Trump is just a lot more open about it because he is reduced to begging like a third-rate televangelist because everyone realizes that he won't honor that social contract.

That's the issue. It's a full time job to get accurate news in today's world. I've found that finding the actual bills being voted on in congress and reading the actual executive orders by the president is far better than trying to find an accurate news source for example.
