just feeling sick right now - medicine sure has come along way...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why was the leg cut, was it just for a gun shot wound?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

IIRC, amputation was also used to prevent infection. Before antibiotics, dying from infected wounds were just as likely to kill soliders.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just a flesh wound!

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Because we shortened the bone.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know it's fake but are leg bones really that small?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They are a marvel of biological engineering. If they were big and solid you would not be able to move well. But they still break easy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck" I said, as I almost puked out my lunch and covering my eyes.

9 years ago | Likes 191 Dislikes 0

Part of me knew it wasn't real and thought it would be ok. It wasn't.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So what happens to the blood that gets pumped down that sewn-closed artery?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never thought about that before..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

There should be a whole conplete Wikipedia article about this, but it's probably just a stub.

9 years ago | Likes 885 Dislikes 6

I, too, had to come back after closing this page, because I realized what a great comment this was.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

had to come back 1 min later after i got that joke, +1 for you.

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I got this 2 posts later, had to come back +1

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well actually! There is the Finnish wikipedia page about amputation and it IS a stub :D

Plot twist, those aren't prosthetics bro.

9 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 2

The saw was too clean. It was the only detail they weren't careful with...

9 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

The everything was too clean.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah yes, they forgot the tetanus

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't worry, anesthesia will be available in about 100 years

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's easily the most horrifying part of all this.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I kinda think part of the continued popularity of bloodletting was just to knock people out, since there weren't many other ways to do it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't know about Napoleonic wars, but during American Civil War it was VERY common to treat gunshot wounds by bleeding until they passed out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How is this not top comment?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 5

I think it was salami.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't worry, I don't think it was real, you can tell because the clothes they were wearing were from a period when cameras weren't that good

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Circumcision.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You read the tittle. You knew what you were getting yourself in to!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Tittle, tittle, tits and spittle

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Heh heh, heh... You said tittle

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It was an amputation from the Napolionic era.

9 years ago | Likes 146 Dislikes 0

fucking horrific, thats what that was

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 1

Amputation for a gunshot wound fuck that haha

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Guns in that era were mostly shooting .60 calibre soft lead bullets. Taking a hit was like a hit from a hollow point + lead poisoning.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you notice they did probe for the bullet at the beginning but the assumption was it was too deep to be dug out. So off with the leg.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is an incredible re-enactment shot by Kevin Wolf, not a real amputation but damn, it looks so intense.

9 years ago | Likes 1564 Dislikes 1

I was almost unsure until your comment. Thank you.

9 years ago | Likes 247 Dislikes 0

This legit raised my blood pressure til they zoomed in on the bone... Phew!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh man ok I was like what fuck can't stop scrolling.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Butchers! - Dr. Leonard McCoy probably

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Dialysis?! What is this? The Dark Ages?!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

"Sounds more like the goddamn Spanish Inquisition!"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't believe you

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure I'd rather just smoke that pipe and die than actually get my leg amputated like this.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty sure it was much the same up to the Civil War, as well.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

US Civil War, not the Marvel Civil War.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for clarifying.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, someone did lose an arm in MCW...it could be confusing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thank you for giving the credit

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you sure this isn't a real one? It doesn't need to be the 1800s for some lunatic with a camera to cut the leg off of a dressed hostage

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There's no blood.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man. This whole time I thought it was real.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Bf and I talked to a colonial Williamsburg doctor and I asked how they did amputations. Apparently there was one with a 300% mortality rate

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

So he killed the patient and the two holding him? Did he use a bomb to perform the amputation?

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

The patient, the doctor and assistant all died?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I think he nicked one poor guy right in the groin and the other asked him a question and he gestured with a knife and had another oops

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yup. Something about poor hygiene and a fast moving infection

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Sawing on bone has always been the only part that gets me to cringe.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One of the hardest parts of watching the opening of Glory.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The bone.. how about the part about going into the artery? I wanna know what they were doing but i've got so much heebiejeebies.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Arteries tend to contract when fully sliced through and bleed less than a gashed one. Plus they pulled it out with that hook thing and...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I imagine they did something to stem the blood flow that wasn't shown, tied it off or cauterized it, probably.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

again, i'm jeebieing so fucking hard. grab the vein/artery with a wire, pull it, burn it. OMG. suhdder
