Eltz Castle, Germany
It is still owned by the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago.
Bürresheim Castle, Eltz Castle and Lissingen Castle are the only castles on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate which have never been destroyed.
jethz
We used to go near there on holidays when I was a kid. (Muden). The walk there and the view are spectacular. Especially as a kid.
ChairmanLMA0
Oh I thought it was owned by someone Eltz.
ispentwaytoolongthinkingaboutthis
So much sexy time has happened in there. Soooo much.
mybliss
I love that place. Been there so often as a kid. Must've been 15 years since the last time. Damn @OP. Now i need to go again.

*knock on wood*
Crateofmonkeyshit
Burg Eltz, it has a natural moat around it. Also it has been under seige before.
JohnnyLawlessEsq
Knowing the history of the Palatinate makes it all the more amazing that this place is still standing.
Erutanmi
"You better not destroy my castle or Eltz!" Ugh that was bad, makes me sick to my stomach. I need some sELTZer.
ObsceneTentacularInsertions
this will make a fine addition to my collection

Theknightswhosayitsonlyafleshwound
But what does the inside look like?
ClydeTheBelovedBandit
Better be careful, if there is a delusional guy talking about a sun nearby chances are, theres a dragon coming.
FunkyDGroovy
Oh shit I went there 4 days ago. It was really cool. We took the last tour of the day which was in German and we do not know German.
squintish
I'm not convinced this isn't a Skyrim mod.
TheGrubermeister
BurritoParty
The best castle. I mean...what Eltz could be better?!
TygrF
There's a ruined fortification on the opposite hill from the castle. Snuck in to check it out when my exchange class visited in '89.
Sharpiiiiihearts
Think it's haunted?
FlyingTigerRose
They survived by ultimatum: "Leave us alone, or ELTZ!!"

That's some solid inter-generational wealth management right there.

This immediately reminded me of castle volkihar In Skyrim for some reason

Welcome to Eichenwalde
Phenomeno
It reminds me of the castle mission from MW3
kryoptik
Is that why it's call the left bank? Because those castles are the only ones left undestroyed?
EvilToska
Historically the right side had fewer frogs, because most of them left. ;-)
GhostofCain
Because it's the right way to go about it.
sandwiched
Just wait until ISIS makes it to that area.
thisaccountisnotentirelyjustforsmut
God, that's.. That's good... I live in a shithole...
StatisticallyInsignificantCanadian
Yeah, but when this place was built they were still tossing poop out the windows.
d0o0o0d
...do you have any idea what the state of plumbing technology was like in the 12th century? Chamberpots were state-of-the-art.
thisaccountisnotentirelyjustforsmut
If you had a castle, you had servants to clean your chamberpots.. Just sayin'...
canderousbossk
If i ever get sent back in time to the 1100s, I know which family im gonna suck up to

Truly the best castle
SederHishtalshelus
Fool! That'll change the spacetime continuum!
DerRattenfngerVonHameln
That's exactly how they were able to survive for 33 generations and infinite iterations of time-loops.
LimaBravo96
Imagine you went back in time to kill your dad before you were conceived. Doing this would ensure you're never conceived however you've also
LimaBravo96
ensured that he will live because you don't exist anymore. Since he does live, so do you.
IAmAHollow
According to multiverse theory, it's completely irrelevant. Whatever happens, both realities exist.
SederHishtalshelus
But which are you in. That doesn't matter to you?
IAmAHollow
Not at all. It's irrelevant as well, seeing as there are an infinite number of you as well, including versions that would be okay with it.
THISSH1T1SbAnAnAS
Or it could be exactly what was supposed to happen but you didn't know until you got there!
SederHishtalshelus
Hoohohho!!
WorkerLurker
No joke, I got sent back to Ancient Greece accidentally hurt some Helen girl, so I took her to Troy to find a doctor. Whoops.
trigonman3

MultiTrackDrifting
Huh, I went to High School with a duchess from this family. I knew her family had a castle but damn...
StatisticallyInsignificantCanadian
Neat. I have a buddy who's a count. He had to go live in Europe for a while as condition to claim his estate.
yankees27
I know a Count as well, Chocula, ever heard of him?
BurritoParty
We all make sacrifices I guess.
NatsukiIsMyWaifu
Did you tap
v ?
MultiTrackDrifting
"No comment."
NatsukiIsMyWaifu
Well, I'm gonna take it that as a yes. If it weren't, why would you dodge the question.
BlueLanternBraxx
I'm curious. Was she a tolerable human being? I feel like anyone with a castle must be an insufferable stuck up prat.
layo131
I went to school with a kid that was in line to the throne of Oman. He was one of the nicest and most down to earth kids in the school.
saxon2060
I went to uni with a lot of legit upper class people (UK). They were all fine. It's the upper-middle-class wannabes who are insufferable.
bezuer
but what if you try to marry one of them? I feel like then they become just as insufferable
MultiTrackDrifting
Nah, she was cool. She grew up here in the states, in a middle class town. Her title was mostly honorary and essentially meaningless.
OverpricedCrayon
I saw a doc about that. Most "duchesses and dukes" dont have much power & some dont have much money left
MultiTrackDrifting
It's a huge family and scattered to the four winds.
d0o0o0d
After 33 generations, yeah, probably thousands of members.
catsofat
That kinda makes me wonder how many duchesses can there be in a line? Like all descendents, or like only ones keeping the family name?
MultiTrackDrifting
She said there were "a lot, at least a hundred."

Ok so like I've done a lot of genealogy & this is kinda one of my dreams, figure out I can call kids duke & dutchess...
Jattetont
That's highly unlikely. Typically there'd be one duke, whose wife is then duchess. It's one of the most exclusive titles.
DaedaIus
As someone with a Knighthood not sponsored by a monarchy, I can say it's pretty neat when when titles come into play.
FirstPostMcGee
How do you have a knighthood not sponsored by monarchy? Isn’t that what makes a knight?
RedIronCrown
The KKK calls some of its members knights but I'm fairly sure there's no monarch involved.
FirstPostMcGee
Serious question.
FauxDejaVu
In my country the President can bestow knighthood. It's like giving someone a medal or a piece if ribbon.
KingBenjen
Follow up how do I do this lol
OverpricedCrayon
When I stayed at a Swiss Hotel in China they asked what to refer to me as. I told them I was a Knight. They said OK.
