I have a wife and a three year old. Last weekend I got a ticket for failure to report an accident. That's up to 90 days in jail. I have a police record (not going in to detail), so I feel like the prosecutor is trying to make an example out of me. I've been a lurker for years and only have a new account. I just want some advice from you wonderful degenerates. There's really no way around jail time and I have no idea how to tell my wife. I'm scared for my family's well being without me, I'm the only "money maker" in the house, and I have no idea how they'll get by without me. I hope you "idealistic" people can help with, at least, a few ideas.
Thanks imgur
For always being there for me (hopefully)

Like ... you have to tell your wife. Spent time in jail, it sucks but what are you gonna do when she finds out and visits?

Cop here. What country/state are you in? There is a lot missing from this...

Not telling your wife, not reporting an accident, previous record. Look on the bright side, she may meet someone better when you're inside.

Bad news doesn't get better with age.

Just tell her. The longer you wait, the less time she has to prepare.

I hope the judge gives you a fair and considerate punishment. But, you fucked up, and that's that. Tell your wife.

At least it's a proper use of the confession bear for once...

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I agree even though we aren't the ones who need to hear this confession.

As everyone's stated, let her know quickly. But also respectfully voice your concerns to the judge for your family's well being, it can help

Play "I Fought The Law & The Law Won" for her out the blue and gauge her reaction. Or just be honest with her, I'm not an ideas guy.

You'd best tell her, and now. Stop talking to us. You'll leave your kid and her high and dry once your put away if your savings won't cover.

Yeah, also, don't let her find out from a third party. That's always shit.

I'd also suggest getting a lawyer. Don't know the circumstances, but an appointed public defender often isn't in your best interest.

Could serving on weekends be an option?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

If there's substance abuse in your record, go for in patient treatment. I did it and I'm a better person for it.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Why didn't you report the accident?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Having your wife and child in the courtroom could actually help your cause

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

@OP check the statute. It might say "90 days in jail and/or $X fine". If it's your first offense maybe you'd just pay the fine

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Well there's more he's not telling us. Failure to report alone wouldn't give you jail time. He was drunk/high or some one got hurt/car wreck

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Get a lawyer.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You're not going to get 90 days unless there's something incredibly heinous in your past. Make sure that either you or your lawyer, if you

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have one, ask the judge for work release. If your past indiscretion is something really stupid, you'll likely only get a few days.

"failure to report an accident" I think Hit and Run is the term you're looking for?

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Wait failure to report an accident is a thing?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Translation: Hit and run.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

oh shit okay. I thought it was like, seeing someone wrecked and not calling it in. I have committed several crimes if that was the case.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The way I see it, you are getting what you deserve for being an idiot. Suck it up. Learn from it. Be a better person next time.

As a woman, my advice is be honest with her. The sooner you tell her, the sooner you guys can come up with a plan for while you're away. GL

A...a woman?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 11

You could stop breaking the law.

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 5

Except--and bear with me on this one-- you go to prison for things you've already done.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

Maybe he should've stopped breaking the law sooner.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could always talk about work release too. I know somebody in a similar situation that is only staying the night in jail

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is "failure to report an accident" your sugary way of saying "I hurt someone in a hit and run because I was drinking"? I'd put money on it.

9 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 2

Crazy how so few people will take responsibility for their own actions.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 4

The longer you wait, the worse it gets. She needs time to look for a job to support herself. Tell he asap

This, op. I know it's no fun, but it's the right thing to do.

"honey, I have a court date coming up."

staring Rick Moranis

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Nah, he doesn't act any more. I hear he settled down as a father. Lovely guy though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

"Honey, I have a date coming up" "WHAT?!" "A court date. Bet you feel better now though eh?"

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

*facepalm* lol

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

real advice: beg borrow or steal to get a real attorney. You aren't required to go to jail. You show remorse and stop fucking up.

9 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 3

Yep. Do this. It might be expensive but it’s better than the alternative.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe ignore the 'steal' part...

Username checks out.

Very true. Got caught for upper tier dui. Mandatory 7 days in jail in my state. Bought a kick ass lawyer. Knocked down to reckless driving

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 34

Yea could you Please drive off a fucking bridge you piece of human garbage?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

Fuck you. You deserved at least the mandatory.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 5

Next time, drink more so you can be sure to kill yourself you deplorable piece of shit.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 9

Glad you're ok but please never EVER drive impaired again. People die.

9 years ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 0

I know. I was a dumb kid. Didnt mean to sound like i was bragging. Just saying a good lawyer can really help you out.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Fuck you, people like you are the worst. People like you killed an associate of mine last week and cripple thousands yearly.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Every single person has drove impaired. I guarantee you have. Drive tired, without your glass, texting, eating food, talking on the phone.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

I have not. When I am tired, I take a break and take a nap. I don't use my phone and I use my glasses due to being blind without 'em

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I also don't eat in my car because hygiene, I don't want breadcrumbs in my car. So yeah, I can say it, fuckers like you are despicable.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

All are considered impaired driving. People make mistakes. Drunk driving has a bad stigma, as it should. But stuff like tired driving

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Is just as bad and worse in some occasions
