“In 1730, six days into their forced cruise, several captives aboard the sloop Little George slipped out of their chains, seized weapons and killed three crew members who were trying to alert the captain. When the Africans found materials to make a bomb, the rest of the crew surrendered and hit a U-turn back to Sierra Leone, where Captain George Scott dropped them off safely at home.”

Some time ago I saw a movie trailer about a black spy during the pivotal time when people fought against slavery. They say Lincoln freed the slaves. As a leader, he did try to placate the South to a point before the war began. In the end, we miss the history and amazing stories of those slaves and former slaves who freed themselves. And their allies who risked everything to help.

This book needs to be read by as many people as possible, if you can't buy a new xooy, your local library (should) have it.

They are so lucky that the people that they are cought for slavery are more human and empatic than the white people because i would have killed every one of them on the ship without any remorse for their actions. I still dont understand how so few of the slaves Revolted aginst their "Masters" i mean what do they had to lose ?
endem1c
Not sure "mutiny" is the word I'd use for slaves freeing themselves
wadatahmydamie
It’s rebellion against “legal” authority, so the word fits

Correct. People are payload.

But where can we go?

There's a discord that elbowdeepinahorse runs, but other than that we're all hoping another and less shit platform comes along to fill the void

I hope it’s called Void.

Most slaves were sold by the coastal tribes, having already been slaved by that tribe, or groups further in, and traded out to contact groups. Tribes weak enough to be attacked hadn't survived into the 1700s, and stronger groups replaced them. Many 'drop offs' would end badly?

People returning to their own country would be aware of this & be able to plan for any fallout.
Those arriving to a lifetime of slavery would have been the ones ending badly.

No amount of preceding injustice should minimize the wholesale commodification of European/American black slave trade that took away, history, language, liberty, and humanity on the basis of skin color. It created a system of white supremacism that has continued to today among fools and fascists.
zombiejedediah
Which also created the inter-african slave trade by creating a market.
MrRandom314159
Okay.... but does that make slavery morally acceptable? Or diminish the badasses who took an entire ship to secure their freedom?
refsawanka
'Most slaves were sold by...' oh shut up. The only reason you would even bring that up is to excuse the wholesale, commercialisation that was the transatlantic slave trade. Yes enslavement has always existed. No you shouldn't keep raising it as a 'point' when people are discussing the slave trade; an imbalance of power that still keeps half the globe in enforced poverty and just look at the internal politics of the US for another fall out.

Love the sound of your own voice much? Those who don't know history, are doomed to repeat it. So, I've made understanding the key points of modern history, including Colonization, a goal. My point was the narrative of the story missed important dynamics of W. African slave trade, and if true, may well have had the escapees re-inslaved shortly after they reached the beach. Few slaves well understood even African coastal geography, though we can hope they knew a safe port, and recognized it.

If you had actually done so you would know that any idea of slave trading in Africa was magnified immensely by the white man colonists. There's no excuse to be found there, none. No important narrative was neglected, you're just nitpicking and your motives are extremely questionable.

You haven’t met your goal at all, you’re perpetuating bullshit arguments, and the word you’re looking for is “enslaved.” https://thegrio.com/2024/02/13/black-history-white-lies-the-10-biggest-myths-about-slavery/

Every accusation is a confession, much?
Ownership and using responsibility is acknowledging the full story and focusing on our cultures part in it. Then we can start healing.
You're focusing on the wrong facts.

The reality of pre-slavery Africa was as bloody and violent as any part of European Colonization, if more stable, during periods when power vacuums were filled by well armed rulers. The kingdoms and empires of Africa before Arabs and European slavers savaged the coasts well parallels Mediterranean and E. Asian history. Too many wars, too much death. If you think the story teller is responsible for, or is enamored of the history, that's all on you.
SometimesIFallDown
And the rest of the world was some kind of peaceful wonderland?
Dumbest fucking attempt at justifying colonisation and slavery that I've seen in a while.

Your wholly inappropriate virtue signalling isn't playing well. Bad batch of psychedelics still in the system? Obviously you have no intention of any communicating. The last thing progressive society needs is false divisions where there should be allies. Which immediately brings into question if you are just another Chaotic Terrorism bot, trying to stir imaginary shit. If it reads like a duck, and sounds like a duck . . I'd block you, but may need cautionary examples to help others.

I love the 'we brought them civilization, they have railways because of us' we didn't build railways for them, we built railways to haul away all their shit.
