Me and my hatchhome.

(iphone) In a pinch, I can shift everything right and sleep in the back (photos of this on blog, so yes, it is actually possible), otherwise I'm pitching a tent and camping. Everything I need to camp, live and move to my new city as a professional is in there. My car has become a little more 'organized' since then. The grey blanket covers everything not black and my windows I had (illegally) tinted before I left DC hide my stuff - and me, along with curtains I asked my mom to make, when sleeping in it. (Photo taken in Chicago)

10,000 miles so far.

I recently arrived in Yosemite and realized there that I have gone 10,000 miles so far. On the map, I traced my route. Below are just a few of my favorite photos. (I have more - lots more.)

Birds on a wire.

(dslr) Somewhere above a gas station in Indiana. An old man pulled over to ask if I was a photographer. "No, I just take photos sometimes."

I had no idea camels were so big!

(iphone) Red River Zoo. Fargo, ND.

Pitching in the Badlands.

(iphone) This photo isn't great in and of itself, but waking up in the middle of the Badlands is pretty rad - despite the f*cking wind that plagued me for about a week. How one follows wind west, I don't know, but I managed to do it through the Dakotas, much to my chagrin.

Bison at sunset.

(dslr) Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND. Some idiot guy was approaching the herd that were blocking the road in front of me. Suddenly I was surrounded by buffalo so close I could touch them. It was unnerving, but as they moved a bit further out, I popped out of my sunroof and snapped some photos. This was one of them.

While surrounded...

can you see thee bit of panic? (My front seat is usually more organized than that.)

Barking prarie dog.

(dslr) In zoos, prairie dogs are cute. In nature, they're loud and obnoxious. Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Hiking Teddy Roosevelt NP.

(dslr, on tripod) After a baby wipe bath, it was time for a hike. I have no idea why this park isn't more widely know; it's fantastic.

Some roadside in Montana

I wonder if people realize the beautiful places they live?

Yellowstone sunset.

(dslr) Near West Yellowstone gate.

Lewis Lake.

(dslr, on tripod) That water was cold - like really cold. Yellowstone NP.

Old Faithful.

(dslr) Did you know that Old Faithful only erupts once every 90ish minutes? I didn't. It also fairly aggressively smells of sulfur.

Reflection in a lake.

(dslr, on tripod) Yellowstone NP.

Yellowstone elk.

(dslr) I chased this elk over a hill, hiding to get more pics after this one and in the process stepped in a huge pile of bison shit. Talk about something you never thought you'd say...

Super moon.

(dslr) Wyoming, taken out of my sunroof. And then I got lost for a bit. Whoops.

Bear bath.

(dslr) Totally huggable, right? Denver zoo.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

(iphone) I like free shit as much as I can find free shit to do. Kansas City, MO.

Foo Fighters!

(iphone) Wichita, KS. I'm not ashamed to say I rushed back east and drove out of the way to see them -- then back west again to ACL the following week.

Fritzel's Jazz Pub, New Orleans.

(iphone) I popped down to NoLa for my birthday...because I could. The jazz was great. The bartender was a bitch. But if you're ever on Bourbon street, skip the beads and go here.

Spirit Family Reunion, ACL 2015

(iphone) Have you ever seen someone rock a washboard with a fork and spoon?! Me neither, but these guys were really awesome! I had never heard of them, but they were my surprise favorite of the festival. If you like folk, I suggest checking them out.

Coasters at a shop.

(iphone) Yes to that one on the right. Austin, TX.

Tucumcari, NM

(iphone) Sometimes you just need a new profile photo, okay. (Don't judge the selfie stick; it was a gift and I'm traveling alone.)

Stopped train along old Route 66.

(dslr) Somewhere in Arizona near Nevada. Very specific, right?

Yosemite, while things were going well...

(iphone) A friend who happened to be in Yosemite after ACL invited me to come over and climb.

Had to bath in the Merced before I found running water.

(Iphone)Learned here you can get brain freeze from the outside of your head. Ouch.

And then things went to shit with him and I became a rock.

(iPhone) See my tent down there? The sign for the park gate a few yards ahead.

And I'm still going!

Wee. (Taken TRNP)

This is my backup plan, really. If everything else goes to shit in my life, I've enough knowledge to be able to live on my own like this.

Yellowstone smells aggressively of sulfur. But as someone who grew up there, I miss that smell more than any other.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Poor as can be, honestly. Just decided to work around the debt to live. when the money runs out, I'm back to work.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

OP says she saved for 6 months and had some money gifted to her. I also inferred that she's travelling cross country to a new job? Doable!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

find a new city and job. haven't pinned down the city, so don't have the job yet. but yes. when the money runs out, i have to work again.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Them's the breaks unfortunately but you sure are packing a lot of life into your life time!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What was the job you left behind? And what will you do afterwards?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Digital Marking. I picked up a freelance job on accident in Montana. I like digital marketing though...so that? Anyone need an SEO expert?

Baby wipe bath does not sound pleasant

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

We call them whore's baths in Aus and it's how I get through festival season!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

We call it a knacker (scumbag) wash in Ireland

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Boooy I hope you never join the Army lol... I can't even stand the smell of them on a normal day. UGH.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I fucking hate baby wipe smells. I don't think I could handle that shit. They should make adult baby wipes that don't smell like that

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dude even the "unscented" fucking smell. Dudes be like, wiping themselves down and I'm taking a ho bath with a bottle of water. Ugh.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i get the unscented ones.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

NOT to mention in the field, scent attracts bugs. After being stung 100+ times by Yellow Jackets, I basically just turn into a Chinchilla.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm glad I didn't join the Army. Fuck that noise.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hell yeah North Dakota! There are dozens of us!

10 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

...this was after my sever offered me his guest room two days before at a truck stop. obviously i took it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Where are you now? Still vagabonding? :D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. Currently typing this from the trunk of my hatchback (turned bed) for the night 3 miles outside of Canada at a reststop. Was in Seattle

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can someone please tl;dr this for me?

10 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

"when the Foo Fighters came on my iPhone through his speakers, he asked in all seriousness "Is this Nickelback?" This..

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Well, not everyone knows rock music. I couldn't tell you nickelback from shinedown, so whatever.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some douche invited her to go climbing with him and then said she wasn't good enough.

10 years ago | Likes 43 Dislikes 1

Guy asked her to climb rocks, brought someone else with him to climb real rocks while she watched on baby rocks, felt bad.

10 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

Some guy went rock climbing with another guy and told this chick nah gurl you just chill out here while we go and she took offense. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

She doesn't clarify if she went or nah so sound like she did exactly what he told her to do maybe because something about missing rope.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

I needed his gear to climb. So I couldn't climb without him.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How can you afford to do this?

10 years ago | Likes 99 Dislikes 3

(When I run out of money, I have to go back to work ... Unless I can find freelance gigs. Then you'll find me in a van down by the river.)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends if you want to do it all at once or year by year. I barely spend anything on my camping trips, even cross country. Very affordable.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

shit like this is not cheap. did the same thing this summer. 2 months in car. instead of gofund bs, asked friends to send me quests. 1/2

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

small quests=small donation, fancy quests were more, but it was all "pay what you want". in the end, it's not enough to do a trip like this.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

so save up! :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

i saved up. but i also got small donations. most were 20-50. endedup with $4k.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... ... so are your friends currently accepting "new friend" applications?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a friend who works odd jobs part times out of the year and is basically homeless and/or couch crashing 100% of the time, 1/3

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

spends her money on plane tickets and, well, that's pretty much it. It's amazing what you can do when you are super kind and don't 2/3

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I've been learning that these last few weeks as I slow down and can't tent anymore. People are so fucking nice. Those stories forthcoming.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

care if you have literally nothing. She's just batshit, but I envy her and her million amazing stories from all over the world.

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Soo a non stop vacation on others' dime. Sounds good to me.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Except you shower once every couple weeks, all you own fits in a backpack, and you sleep outside most of the time.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I saved up for 6 months. I also set up a GoFundMe that was successful among my close friends. I put my student loans in preferment. Limited.

10 years ago | Likes 91 Dislikes 7

There is a website of farmers and places that will feed and house you for work but I can't remember the name

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

help ex?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Saving up for six months would net me like $4

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I netted 3k. Then the money go got for leaving my job was another 3k in a 2 week delay in vacation hours. $4k was donated to gofundme.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Going cross-country the fastest route is like 3 grand how much did you have

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

~10k

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

how is it 3k?? i have a small car that gets 400 mpg. and i tent or sleep in my car or couch surf. it's fairly cheap-ish. and i don't eat out

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why would you leave DC? there are great people here.(like me)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

who are you? :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Maybe the insane level of gun crime. Highest in nation.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

eh,

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 97 Dislikes 0

Same, give me money from vacation friends, yeah go to hell.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im a photographer who just moved to the US, I've wanted to do this all my life but I'll have to work for it, my friends wouldn't ever pay it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Oh you wanna travel while I gotta pay taxes?? Beers on you since you asked" I would probably hear that.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yep. I would be that friend.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I just did something similar: 3 weeks, 6,500 miles, and it was spectacular. Good for you! I hope your adventures continue to be rad!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

oh yeah?! where to? :)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Started in Dallas, up to Denver (RMNP), over to southern Utah, then up to Yellowstone/Teton, Glacier, then to the coast and south to the Bay

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

could you get into glacier? i heard it was closed because of fires. south utah - did you go to moab?!?! (i LOVED moab)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was going to be me exact question. Mind me asking how much you accumulated for the adventure? And where you are now? Future?

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I hope she answers this - I would love to do something like this with my life for a bit.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

see above ;) if you have any questions for your travels, please feel free to PM me!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right now I'm in WA state heading to BC. Then down Pacific Coast Highway. I accumulated about 10k to travel with. About $4k was donated.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I also managed to pick up a freelance job on accident in Montana. So that's another couple hundred to start. Hopefully that goes somewhere.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's kinda what I was asking. You journey after this journey. It's good to know you found a side quest though!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm going where the wind takes me. I don't have concrete plans for the future. Whoops?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
