It is strange how children’s Christian reading materials are almost all stories from the Old Testament. They confused me because it made it seem like Christianity is all about suffering and dying horribly. The only new ones regularly taught are Jesus’ birth at Christmas, Jesus turning water into wine at a party and walking on water. It makes you question those who choose what texts we should pay more attention to and their reasons

Thing is, there _is_ a religion they can choose that is only old Testament: Judasim. The old testament is there to understand the history (where things went wrong) and context that Jesus was operating in. Pick a religion, don't claim Christianity and then ignore everything Jesus said!!

I'm so glad my church never taught that when i used to go to Sunday school and later Christian youth classes. It was all about love. My favorite SS hymn was Jesus Loves the Little Children, red and yellow, black and white. I've always be bothered by Old Testament Christians. Even Onward Christian Soldiers wasn't present as literal, but as symbolic.

I grew up Catholic in Ontario, Canada, and that's how it was for me, too. Golden Rule, loaves and fishes, Sermon on the Mount, etc. Basically seek to do good in the world, and help those who need it. I'm an atheist now, but those are still good morals.

The problem I see with people citing the Bible for morals is that there is so much awful stuff in it that you need to decide which bits to follow and which to not follow. If you are doing that then did you ever really need the book for the morals in the first place?

Preaching from ignorance. The comic is intentionally ignoring that the Old Testament is done. That was an era of law before the New Testament brought an era of grace.

The issue is that it’s not the comic ignoring that Jesus told us to basically forget the Old Testament through his renewed contract with God but these churches that place more importance on it. As a child, the story of Noah’s Ark is probably the most retold for Christian kids and it stays with you. Also, Adam and Even being exiled and the story of Moses and leading his people out of Egypt; I was scared once as a kid that my brother would die if our front door wasn’t painted red in lamb’s blood.

God damn, dude, you missed the point of the comic by a mile. The comic is specifically calling out how many American churches don't teach the new Testament but instead focus on the old Testament, and especially the parts about how wrathful and violent its stories are in order to desensitize the kids. The current trump administration is quite often referring to itself as warriors of god, directly saying they want the violent parts of the bible.
