I'm going to save all the animals!

Jan 28, 2017 1:04 AM

Its been a very long road to get to this point. My mother committed suicide right before I left for college which made me an emotional wreck in undergrad. Veterinary school is nearly impossible to get into without a high GPA and thousands of hours of experience and some schools look unfavorably on mental conditions like depression. (I had quite a few veterinary professionals tell me not to mention my mom in my personal statement because it might hurt me more than help). But I stayed true to me and now I'm going to veterinary school!

Dog tax. Stella and Tibby. They're not related I just have an obsession with black and white spotted dogs.

Congrats! It's a rough road but it's worth it in the end!

My kid is on this path in the fall. She's dreamed of it since she was 2. Donated birthday gifts to shelters, thousands of volunteer hours.

When I was younger I volunteered as a dog walker at my shelter. Bless you and those poor animals. You got this.

Sister-in-law is a vet and is quite open about some of the tasks she needs to do. It's glib but the point is that you will need to be...

strong to complete the tasks you'll be called upon to do. Given your stated history, I do hope you've considered that.

I work on an idian reservation as a vet assistant. Im aware of the many hardships of being a vet. Euthanizing is a small portion.

Don't borrow money to go to school.

This is actually incredibly good advice. Debt is a HUGE issue for new graduates now, and it's only going to get worse with the new schools.

Do you have 250k laying around for a graduate school? Im aware of the debt Id be taking. Its manageable.

I'm a vet. I'm telling you that many new grads with <$250K in debt find themselves unable to manage their loans. We don't make that much.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I know and I know plenty of vets who manage otherwise.

I hope you’ve graduated veterinary school and are doing well in the real world.

Dont exactly have a choice. I dont have 250k laying around.

Well seems that many vet grads can't afford to pay the debt. But have fun, hope you enjoy it.

They can, its just stressful and easily fuck-upable. I know the dangers and heading into it with open eyes. Thank you though!

My daughter is borrowing to pay for Columbia right now. We paid for college. Law school is on her. You'll be fine.

This is very much not true. Do you know starting salaries for vets? Average graduating debt? Law school is only 3 years, too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do. Im not heading into this blind and have talked to a bunch of vet students and professionals.

250K loan @ 6.8% has monthly payment of $2,500. That's 30K / year! Average starting salary (pre-tax) is ~60K. That's not manageable.
